An exhibition of ceramics (陶瓷) from Jingdezhen, a famous Chinese town producing porcelain, was on in downtown Wangfujing Street, Beijing. I was curious and watched to share the fun. When I went in an elegant set of celadon tableware (精美的青花餐具)drew my attention. Its price tag showed 3,980 RMB, much more than I could afford. But it struck my heartstrings and its elegance made it worth the price. As I had just moved into my new house, I really needed it. I tried to persuade myself: if to buy a luxury that I fortunately met and that fascinated me so much was a fault, it would be a charming fault indeed.
I called a female shopping guide and asked her to take the tableware out of the glass exhibition cupboard where it was laid on a golden velvet(金丝绒)cushion. I wanted a close look to admire its elegance in detail. When she unlocked the cupboard she said enthusiastically to promote the sale, "This tableware is really of high grade. If matched with a set of high-grade table and chairs, it will be much more glorified and extravagant."
Her over-enthusiastic remarks were really inopportune, like hot water spilled from a boiling kettle and destroyed my desire to own the elegant tableware. I was really thankful to her to bring me to my senses.
"Sorry, Miss. I'm not going to watch it any more." I turned abruptly and hurried away from the exhibition hall. The girl was left standstill with astonishment.
She didn't know that I decided giving it up, not because the tableware was anything wrong, but because her advice reminded me the tableware should be matched with a set of high-grade table and chairs to set it off. I’ve already got a set of table and chairs that didn’t go with the elegant tableware.

A new study says one part of the human brain may become smaller as a result of a condition known as jet lag (飞行时差反应). Jet lag results from flying long distances in an airplane. People with jet lag may feel extremely tired for several days. They may also have problems thinking clearly and remembering.
Recently a researcher at the
The researcher took some saliva from the women’s mouths to measure levels of a hormone (荷尔蒙) that increases during stress. He tested them to see if they could remember where black spots appeared on a computer screen. And he took pictures of their brains to measure the size of the brain’s temporal lobes (脑叶).
It was found that the women who had less time between flights had smaller right temporal lobes. This area of the brain deals with recognizing and remembering what is seen. The same group performed worse and had slower reaction times on the visual memory test. And their saliva samples showed higher levels of stress hormones.
The researcher believes the brain needs at least ten days to recover after a long trip. He says airline workers told him their ability to remember went worse after working on planes for about four years. Other studies have shown that increased feelings of stress can cause a loss of cells in the part of the brain that controls memory.
Scientists say more tests are needed to study the effects of jet lag on the brain. They want to find out if too much jet lag could permanently affect memory.

I began to work as a salesgirl in a department store. I got there that morning and was introduced to all the salesmen and saleswomen. Throughout the day, one of the salesmen talked with me. I thought we might become friends. That evening after work we went out for dinner. We sat together and talked, but our numbers were never exchanged.
Around 10 pm I began my 2-hour drive back. For the first part of the drive I was thinking to myself how stupid I had been for not giving him my number. Then all of a sudden, when I had gone around a comer I was completely over in another lane. There was no time to even hit brakes. I hit at once. The police came and cut the top of my car off to get me out. They sent me to the hospital quickly.
My mother got there late that night, and saw me lying in the emergency room. The next morning, mom called the manager and told him what had happened and that I would be in the hospital for a long time. A few hours later, I received a phone call -- it was the guy I hadn't given my number. Well, he came to visit me that night and the next night. We spent a lot of time together.
It was months before I would be walking and driving again, but he'd sit by me. I don't think I could have pulled through it without him. Now I can walk freely, and just this week we are planning on getting married one year after the day we met. It's just amazing how a tragedy like a
car accident could bring about such a wonderful relationship!

Last
April, on a visit to the new Mall of America near
I know already that the Mall of America had been imagined by its designers, not merely as a marketplace, but as a national tourist attraction. Elevan thousand articles, the small book informed me, had been written about the mall. Four hunched trees had been planted in its gardens, $625 million had been spent to build it, and 350 stores were already in business.
Three thousand bus tours were expected each year along with a
half-million Canadian visitors and 200, 000 Japanese tourists. Sales are
expected to be at $650 million for 2008 and at $1 billion for 2009. Pop singers
and film stars such as Janet Jackson and Arnold Schwarzeneggar visited the mall.
It was five times larger than Red Square and it included 2.3 miles of hallways
and used almost twice as Knott's

C
"When one of the doctors criticizes (批评) me, I get defensive. I feel like a child again, being scolded, and I want to explain that I'm not wrong," says Viola, a nurse. This is a common reaction to criticism, but not a good one. There are better ways of dealing with criticism.
Try to be objective (客观的). When Sol was criticized by his new employer for not having made a sale, Sol's reaction was to feel sorry for himself. "I had put everything I had into making that sale," Sol says. "And I felt that I had failed as a person. I had to learn through experience not to react like that to each failure."
Take time to cool down. Rather than react at once to criticism, take some time to think over
what was said. Your first question should be whether the criticism is fair from the other person's position. The problem may be a simple misunderstanding of what you did or your reasons for doing it.
Take positive action. After you cool down, consider what you can do about the situation. The best answer may be "nothing". "I finally realized that my boss was having personal problems and taking them out on me because I was there," says Sheila. "His criticisms didn't really have anything to do with my work, so nothing I said or did was going to change them." In Sheila's case, the best way to deal with it was to leave her job. However, that's an extreme reaction.
You may simply explain your opinion without expecting an in-depth discussion. You may even decide that the battle isn't worth fighting this time. The key, in any ease, is to have a reasonable plan.

Trees should only be pruned (修剪) when there is a good and clear reason for doing so and, fortunately, the number of such reasons is small.Pruning involves the cutting away of overgrown and unwanted branches, and the inexperienced gardener can be encouraged by the thought that more damage results from doing it unnecessarily than from leaving the tree to grow in its own way.
First, pruning may be done to make sure that trees have a desired shape or size. The object may be to get a tree of the right height, and at the same time to help the growth of small side branches which will thicken its appearance or give it a special shape.Secondly, pruning may be done to make the tree healthier. You may cut diseased or dead wood, or branches that are rubbing against each other and thus cause wounds. The health of a tree may be encouraged by removing branches that are blocking up the centre and so preventing the free movement of air.
One result of pruning is that an open wound is left on the tree and this provides an easy entry for disease, but it is a wound that will heal.Often there is a race between the healing and the disease as to whether the tree will live or die, so that there is a period when the tree is at risk.It should be the aim of every gardener to reduce harm to the trees which have been pruned smooth and clean, for healing will be slowed down by roughness. You should allow the cut surface to dry for a few hours and then paint it with one of the substances available from garden shops produced especially for this purpose.Pruning is usually done without interference from the leaves and also it is very unlikely that the cuts you make will bleed. If this does happen, it is, of course, impossible to paint them properly.
