Scientists are trying to make the deserts into good land again. They want to bring water to the deserts, so people can live and grow food. They are learning a lot about the deserts. But more and more of the earth is becoming desert all the time. Scientists may not be able to change the desert in time.

Why is more and more land becoming desert? Scientists think that people make deserts. People are doing bad things to the earth.

Some places on the earth don’t get very much rain. But they still don’t become deserts. This is because some green plants are growing there. Small green plants and grass are very important to dry places. Plants don’t let the hot sun make the earth even drier. Plants don’t let the wind blow the dirt(泥土) away. When a little bit of rain falls, the plants hold water. Without plants, the land can become a desert much more easily.

36. Plants can keep dry land from becoming desert.

37. It is good to get rid of (除去)the grass in the desert.

38. All places without much rain will become deserts.

39. It’s important for us to plant trees and protect forests.

How do you feel when you have to make a speech in front of class? What about when you go to a birthday party? Do you get really shy?

Shyness means feeling nervous or frightened when you’re around other people. Experts have found that more than 80 percent of middle school students feel afraid to be the center of attention. Some kids are born shy. Some become shy later because of their life experiences.

It’s OK  if it takes you a while to feel yourself again when you go to a new place or meet new people. In fact, everybody gets a little shy sometimes. It’s just a case of how much.

Most people have red faces and talk in broken sentences when they get shy. But some become so shy that they won’t go to a restaurant because they are too nervous to order and pay for their food. Some are afraid of meeting new people, so they seldom go outside. This kind of shyness can be bad for a person.

If shyness doesn’t stop you from doing something you want to do, being shy isn’t a very big problem. Some experts say shy people are cleverer because they think more and talk less. Shy people are also good at working with others because they think more for other people. Some great people in history were shy, too.

You see, being shy isn’t all bad. But remember not to let good opportunity pass by just because of it! If you have to sing a song at a birthday party or practice your spoken English in front of others, just do it! There is nothing to be afraid of.

41. The underlined phrase “to feel yourself again” in the third paragraph means “________”.

A. to find yourself        B. to be oneself

C. to enjoy oneself        D. to help oneself

42. What kind of shyness can be bad according to the passage?

A. You find it is hard to enjoy yourself at a party.

B. You feel a little nervous when you go to a new place

C. You seldom go outside, afraid of meeting new people.

D. You have a red face when you’re asked to answer a question in class.

43. If you have to practice your spoken English in class, _______ .

A. just do it.                          B. just refuse to do it

C. you’d better ask someone to help you   D. tell your teacher you’re too shy to do that

44.We can infer (推测)from the passage that ________ .

A. kids are all born shy                 B. you can’t change yourself

C. shy people can also be successful

D. shy people are not good at working with others.

45. What is the best title for this passage?

A. Are You Too Shy?                           B.Think More For Others.

C  Find out What You’re like!             D.Once He Was Shy Just like you!

( C )

In England recently three foreign gentlemen came to a bus stop and waited. About five minutes later, the bus they wanted came along. They were just going to get on when suddenly there was a loud noise behind them. People rushed onto the bus and tried to push them out of the way. Someone shouted at them. The bus conductor came rushing down the stairs to see what all the trouble was about. The three foreigners seem all at sea and looked embarrassed. No one had told them about the British custom of lining up for a bus that the first person who arrives at the bus stop is the first person to get on the bus .
Learning the language of a country isn't enough. If you want to have a pleasant visit, find out as much as possible about the manners and customs of your host country. You will probably be surprised just how different they can be from your own. A visitor to India would do well to remember that people there consider it impolite to use the left hand for passing food at table. The left hand is supposed to be used for washing yourself. Also in India, you might see a man shaking his head at another to show that he doesn't agree. But in many parts of India a shake of the head means agreement. Nodding (点头) your head when you are given a drink in Bulgaria will most probably leave you thirsty .
In that country, you shake your head to mean 'yes'― a nod means ‘no’. At a meal in countries on the Arabic Peninsula, you will find that your glass is repeated refilled as soon as you drink up. If you think that you have had enough , you should take the cup or glasses in your hand and give it a little shake from side to side or place your hand over the top.
In Europe it’s quite usual to cross your legs when you are sitting talking to someone even at an important meeting. Doing this in Thailand, however, could bring about trouble. Also, you should try to avoid touching the head of an adult ―it's just not done in Thailand .

46. The British people tried to push the three gentlemen out of the way, because the gentlemen _________ .
 A. were foreigners B. didn't have tickets
 C. made a loud noise      D. didn't line up for the bus

47. According to the article, if you want to have a pleasant journey in a foreign country, you should _________.
 A. learn the language of the country
 B. understand the manners and customs of the country
 C. have enough time and money
 D. make friends with the people there

48. In India it is considered impolite ___________.
A. to use the right hand for passing food at table.

B. to pass food with the left hand.
C. to eat food with your hands.
D. to help yourself at table.

49. To cross one's legs at an important meeting in Europe is _______.
A. a common habit B. an important manner
C. a serious trouble      D. a bad manner

50. The best title for this article is ________.
A. People's Everyday Life    B. Mind Your Manners
C. Shaking and Nodding Head D. Taking a Bus in England
