Being thirteen has certain problems that only another thirteen-year-old would understand. The biggest, I think , is learning to get along well with adults. I have found that when dealing with grown-ups, it is wise to remember two things:
1. Always use your head.
2. Never use your head.
For instance, one day just before supper, my mother sent me to the store for a loaf of
whole-wheat bread. They didn’t have any. When I told my mother, she said, “Well, what kind did you get? “ I told her I didn’t get any. She looked as if I had just announced that I was leaving home for good. “ For goodness’ sake, ” she said, “ if they didn’t have whole-wheat, you should have got something else!” Why don’t you use your head?”
Not long after that, she sent me to the store for red oilcloth. They didn’t have any, so I bought seven yards of purple, I thought it was pretty. Mother didn’t . She said,” Who ever heard of purple oilcloth in a red kitchen?” I told her I was only trying to use my head. She said, “ Well, don’t! And in the future, if you can’t get what I send you for, don’t get anything.”
See what I mean?
There are other things that seem a little strange, too. If my father goes out for the evening, he tells me to “ look after” my mother and sister. But, if the family goes out, and I want to stay home, my father won’t let me. He doesn’t feel comfortable if I am home alone. That means I am old enough to “ look after’ my mother and sister but not old enough to “look after” myself!
Another problem is what to do when you trip over the cat and land with your head in the refrigerator, causing a large lump to appear just over the right eyebrow. In this case, your father could feel free to explode with a few choice words. “ Your sister could shed enough tears to dampen the whole room. Your mother could, and probably would, do both. But you? You are thirteen and can’t do anything! You are too young to curse, and “ big boys” don’t cry. ” So you just stand there looking more stupid than usual. But in spite of all this, I still think thirteen is a wonderful age!
62.The main idea of the selection is that _______.
A. young children are annoying.
B. being thirteen involves too many responsibilities.
C. a thirteen-year-old boy is the sun of the family.
D. thirteen-year-olds have special problems.
63. The author says the biggest problem is ______.
A. learning how to use one’s head.
B. assuming responsibilities.
C. showing you can be trusted.
D. learning how to get along with grown-ups.
64. The author thinks that his father should allow him to _______.
A. go shopping by himself. B. stay at home alone.
C. look after the family. D. use his head.
65. The author complains that there is no acceptable way for a thirteen-year-old boy to ________.
A. prevent his sister from crying . B. act when he is in the kitchen.
C. avoid tripping over the cat. D. behave when he hurts himself.
66. The main idea is illustrated chiefly by ______.
A. experiences that happened to the author’s friends.
B. imaginary experiences of a typical thirteen-year-old.
C. incidents from the author’s own experience.
D. wonderful experiences characteristic of a thirteen-year-old.

Authorities did not

DeKalb county
coroner(验尸官)Dennis J.
Miller on Friday released the identities of the four victims who died in the
county: Daniel Parmenter, 20, of Westchester; Catalina Garcia, 20, of
“Two other victims died after being transferred to hospitals in other counties,” Miller said. Witnesses said the gunman, dressed in black and wearing a stocking cap, emerged from behind a screen on the stage of 200-seat Cole Hall and opened fire just as the class was about to end around 3 pm.
Officials said 162 students were registered for the class but it was unknown how many were there on Thursday.
Allyse Jerome, 19, a sophomore(大二学生)from Shunmburg, said the gunman burst through a stage door and pulled out a gun.
“Honestly, at first everyone thought it was a joke,” Jerome said. Everyone hit the floor, she said. Then she got up and ran, but tripped. She said she felt like “an open target.”
“He could’ve decided to get me,” Jerome said on Friday. “I thought for sure he was gonna get me.”
Lauren Carr said she was sitting in the third row when she saw the shooter walk through a door on the right-hand side of the stage, pointing a gun straight ahead.
“I personally Army-crawled halfway up the aisle(通道),” said Carr, a 20-year-old sophomore. “I said I could get up and run or I could die here.”
She said a student in front of her was bleeding, “but he just kept running.”
More than a hundred students cried and hugged as they gathered outside the Phi Kappa Alpha house early Friday morning to remember Dan Parmenter, who was one of those killed.

Sport is not only physically challenging, but it can also be mentally challenging. Criticism from coachers, parents, and other teammates, as well as pressure to win can create too much anxiety or stress for young athletes. Stress can be physical, emotional, or psychological and research has indicated that it can lead to burnout. Burnout has been described as dropping or quitting of an activity that was at one time enjoyable.
The early years of development are critical years for learning about oneself. The sport setting is one where valuable experiences can take place. Young athletes can, for example, learn how to cooperate with others, make friends, and gain other social skill that will be used throughout their lives. Coaches and parents should be aware, at all times, that their feedback to youngsters can greatly affect their children. Youngsters may take their parents’ and coaches’ criticisms to heart and find a fault in themselves.
Coaches and parents should also be cautious that youth sport participation does not become work for children. The outcome of the game should not be more important than the process of learning the sport and other life lessons. In today’s youth sport setting, young athletes may be worrying more about who will win instead of enjoying themselves and the sport. Following a game many parents and coaches focus on the outcome and find fault with youngsters’ performances.Positive support should be provided regardless of the outcome. Research indicates that positive reinforcement motivates and has a greater effect on learning than criticism. Again, criticism can create high levels of stress, which can lead to burnout.

Ⅱ.读写任务 (25 分)

Honesty
is one of the most treasured traditional values in
However, with the development of society, we often hear complaints about dishonesty. Reports with the theme of dishonesty often appear in the media. For example, some people try to get rich and live a comfortable life. But they do not work hard honestly, instead they cheat others. They sell something quite ordinary at a very high price. Some people's delaying paying back the loan can serve as another example. Some people, including some college students, get loan from the bank, and promise to pay within, say, 3 years. However, they don't do that.
The dishonest people sometimes can get benefit from their behaviors. So some people assert that dishonesty can bring people benefit, while honesty only makes people suffer. Is that so? Definitely not. It is always true that honesty is the best policy. It pays to be honest. The cheater selling "the treasure" mentioned above will surely be disclosed and punished some day.
On the contrary, if he had been honest, neither the buyer nor he himself would have suffered. The people who do not return money in time will sooner or later become infamous, and will not get the money from others again. If he had acted differently, he would have earned respect and trust, meanwhile, the bank would not have suffered from loss.

[参考范文]
The passage mainly tells us that nowadays many people are dishonest for their own benefit. Because not only they neglect our traditional values, but also they want to escape being punished.
Dishonesty does great harm to our society. It can destroy our good relationship with others, bringing lots of unstable factors to the society. Sometimes, it may even affect people’s health.
Why should we be honest? Firstly, being honest is one of Chinese traditional virtues which we should carry forward. Secondly, friendship is based on honesty. Seeing that the honest person is reliable, most of people are willing to make friends with them. Thirdly, honesty is very important for us to build a harmonious society and realize our spiritual civilization.
As students, we should act honestly every day and never cheat others, including cheat in exams. Besides, we should help those who are dishonest correct their mistakes. Only in this way can we win respect from others.
