Hawking suffered from a disease called amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS（肌肉萎缩性侧面硬化病） in 1963. At the time, doctors thought he would only live about two years. One day, the camel went to drink at the nearby river. Ad Vingerhoets is a professor of psychology（心理学） at Tilburg University in the Netherlands. He is one of the few scientists in the world who have studied crying. According to Vingerhoets, there are three types of tears. Basal tears are the first type. They act as a protective object between the eye and the rest of the world. Next are reflex tears. They wash your eyes clean when something gets in them. Finally, there are emotional tears. “They are connected with our feelings,” explains Vingerhoets. “Especially when we feel helpless.”
