That bottle of water you paid $ 1 to $ 3 for may contain (包含) tiny pieces of plastic, according to a new report. A recent study tested 259 water bottles from 11 brands sold across nine countries, including the United States, and found that 93% of those tested contained microplastics (微塑料) pollution.

Sherri Mason, a researcher of the State University of New York said that 65% of the plastic pieces were “chips” of plastic, and contained the plastic which was used to make some bottle cups.

“I think it is coming through the process of bottling the water,” Mason said. “I think that most of the plastic that we are seeing is coming from the bottle itself, it is coming from the cup, it is coming from the industrial process of bottling the water.”

Researchers remind that it’s unclear what influence microplastics can have on the human body. And, microplastics have been found in everything, ranging from fish and shelllish (贝类) sold in the supermarket to tap water.

The International Bottled Water Association President and CEO Joe Doss said in a research, “The study isn’t based on science, and the study’s findings do nothing more than unnecessarily scare customers. Customers can remain confident that bottled water products, like all food and drinks, are strictly regulated (管理) by the U. S. Food and Drug Administration are safe for users. The bottled water industry is always trying to provide customers with the safest and highest quality products.”

The World Health Organization told BBC that it is doing a survey on the hidden risks of drinking bottled water.
