I used to believe courtesy was a thing of the past. Very seldom have I encountered a courteous human being in this modern era.

Recently, I had to change my thinking when I came face to face with just such a human being in a coffee place, with my two daughters. The place was crowded as usual and we had to climb steep(陡峭的) stairs in order to find an empty table. After enjoying coffee and snacks, we went down the narrow stairs, where there was hardly any space for another person to either climb up or come down.

Just as I was in the middle of the stairs, a gentleman entered the main entrance of the restaurant which was right in front of the staircase(楼梯). I was sure I would be pushed roughly by this man going up. I kept coming down as fast as I could. My daughters were already down, looking up at me worriedly, hoping I would reach them before the stranger started walking up the stairs, knowing I was a nervous sort.

Nearly reaching them, I noticed the man still standing near the door. I reached my daughters and passed the stranger at the entrance door which he kept holding open. I looked back thinking he was still at the door, deciding whether to go in or find another less crowded place. I saw him going up the stairs, two at a time. I told my daughters about it and all three of us felt bad that we did not even thank the courteous gentleman who was actually holding the door open for us ladies to pass through before going up.

Such well-mannered people are hard to find these days, when pushing is very common in our advanced but aggressive society. We applauded for his chivalry(骑士精神).

【题目】B

People are interested in eating raw and whole foods (天然健康食品). They are usually digested more efficiently than cooked and processed foods. When we cook foods, we destroy the natural enzymes (酶) that are part of the food in its raw form. These enzymes were intended by nature to help us digest the food. When we consume food without these natural enzymes, our bodies either digest the food improperly or allow too many nutrients (营养) to be absorbed into the blood. In both cases, the result is obesity.

Processed foods contain chemical elements, which might confuse the stomach that tells us when we’ve had enough to eat; as a result, people often overeat. Processed foods also upset the digestion cycle. Then, the body’s metabolism (新陈代谢) becomes inactive, and the result is weight gain and obesity.

To stop this vicious circle in its tracks, people need to have healthy food that will balance the body. Eating the right types of raw and whole foods can help. It’s also important to restore our enzyme balance. We need to tell and avoid the foods that cause negative effects and eat the foods that increase enzyme production. If we truly want to change and help our body heal itself, we need to take an active approach.

Ammie Reddick from East Kilbride, Lanarkshire, was only 18 months old when she had the accident that had scarred (留下创伤) her for life. The child reached up to get a hot bottle in the family kitchen and poured boiling water over her body.

Her mother Ruby turned round and, seeing Ammie badly burnt, rushed her daughter to a nearby hospital. Twenty percent of Ammie’s body had been burned and all of her burns were third-degree. There, doctors performed an operation that took about six hours to control her injuries. Over the next 16 years, Ammie received 12 more operations to repair her body.

Culture means any human behavior that is learned in human society. All of the meaningful parts of a culture are passed on to different generations through tradition or social learning. 1 Culture exists in agricultural as well as industrialized (工业化的) societies.

Culture is necessary for the survival (幸存) of human beings. Practically everything humans know, think, value, feel, and do is learned through taking part in a cultural system. 2 Here is one of the cases of children growing up apart from human society. In the province of Midnapore in India, a scientist was told by local villagers that there were “ghost (鬼)” in the forest. Upon looking into the case, he found that two children appeared to have been living with a group of wolves in the forest. 3 In his diary, the scientist describes his first view of Kamala and Amala (the names of the children).

Kamala and Amala were terrible-looking creatures; the heads were like big balls covering the shoulders. Their eyes were bright and sharp, unlike human eyes. They were very fond of raw meat and raw milk. 4

It is important for children to live in a healthy cultural environment because they learn knowledge through imitating others. 5

A. From this viewpoint, all human groups have a culture.

B. These children were the ghosts described by the local people.

C. This statement is well supported by some well-written cases.

D. Human beings can develop abilities by fighting against nature.

E. Culture refers only to the art and classical music of a particular society.

F. In general, their behaviors and habits were totally different from human beings.

G. They learn human languages and behaviors by taking part in a certain cultural group.
