【1】根据上文中的"which had never happened before"及下文中的"she slept downstairs and never came into..." uncharacteristic"不典型的,不表示(某人或某物的)特性的";unnecessary"不必要的,多余的";acceptable"可接受的,令人满意的"。

I was fast asleep and my cat Tink woke me up"是提示。

【3】根据下文中的"because Id been out late the night before"可知,作者前一天晚上外出到很晚,所以感觉到很疲惫(tired)。annoyed"恼怒的,生气的";confused"困惑的,糊涂的";discouraged"灰心的,丧气的"。

remember"记得,记起";admit"承认,准许进入";suspect"怀疑,猜疑"。

【5】根据上文中的"White smoke spread across the room"及下文中的"we jumped out of bed"可知,此处指的应是作者惊慌地(in a panic)叫醒Russ,他们从床上跳了下来。

leave out"遗漏,不包括";give out"公布,宣布";work out"算出,解决"。

hit"使突然想起,使突然意识到";surround"包围,围住";threaten"威胁";frighten"使害怕"。

【11】根据下文中的"our assumption that Tink was safe"及"We believed that she had..." declare"宣布";conclude"断定,推断出";assume"假定,认为";pretend"假装"。

satisfied"确信的,满意的";pleased"高兴的";proud"自豪的"。

【18】 根据下文的"she wasnt breathing and her tongue was hanging out"可知,此处表示他们以为她死了,因为她没有了呼吸而且她的舌头伸出来了。

touched"感动的";disappointed"失望的";heartbroken"极度伤心的,悲伤的";ashamed"惭愧的,羞愧的"。

We thought she was dead" "she wasnt breathing... hanging out"形成对比,表示随后,消防员把一个氧气罩戴在她的头上,让人难以置信的是(unbelievably),猫又有了呼吸,她活了过来。
