【题目】Hyperloop: the train of the future?

We’re going through the Nevada desert, north of Las Vegas, for having a look at what its supporters believe is the future of transport. This is Hyperloop - an attempt to send passengers rushing at 700 miles an hour through a vacuum tube.

Many think that’s impossible, but this project came back last year of virgin America Inc. with Sir Richard Branson becoming chari-man. In this 500-metre test track, they say they have shown that the technology works, though they’ve not yet put any human beings on board. The head of engineering, a space scientist from NASA, sees no reason why people might be frightened.

Anita Sengupta, Head of Engineering, Virgin Hyperloop One

“The Hyperloop is a maglev train in a vacuum system. And so you can also think of it as an aircraft flying at 200,000 feet high so people don’t have any problem flying in aeroplanes and people don’t have any problem going in maglev trains. This is simply joining the two and allows you to be more energy - saving.” The Virgin Hyperloop team have said they could take passengers from London to Edinburgh in 50 minutes or cut the journey between. New York and Boston to under half an hour.

Did you know?

The word ‘maglev’ is a combination(结合)of the words ‘magnetic’ and ‘levitation’. This is because the system uses magnets to levitate(使浮起)the train. This reduces friction(摩擦力)-- the force that makes it difficult for things to move freely when they are touching each other -- and increases speed. The first maglev train operated in Hamburg, Germany in 1979.

1You are likely to see Hyperloop in ________.

A.City of Las VegasB.Nevada DesertC.NASA BaseD.Hamburg, Germany

2Hyperloop didn’t get support until ________.

A.human beings were put on boardB.the vacuum tube was completed last year

C.Sir Richard Branson became chairmanD.scientists solved two problems of transport

3The underlined word “attempt”can be replaced by “________’.

A.effectB.effortC.eventD.example

4A maglev train is fast because it can ________.

A.rise to 200,000 feet highB.rush in a vacuum tube

C.float because of the magnetsD.reduce friction of the air

5Which of the following statement is TRUE?

A.Head of the Virgin Hyperloop Team is a space scientist.

B.The first maglev train was invented in the Untied States.

C.Most people have confidence in the Hyperloop project.

D.Hyperloop has sent passengers from New York to Boston.

6What is the Hyperloop? The Hyperloop is ________.

A.a vacuum tube testing a maglev train system

B.an aeroplane flying at 700miles an hour

C.a maglev train floating on the railway tracks

D.a maglev tain traveling in a vacuum tube

Secret codes keep messages private. Banks, companies, and government agencies use secret codes in doing business, especially when information is sent by computer. People have used secret codes for thousands of years. As long as there have been codes, people have tried to break them. Code breaking never ______ code making. The science of creating and reading coded messages is called cryptography(密码系统).

There are three main types of cryptography. You can ______ a message by having the first letters of each word spell it out. For example, the first letters of “My elephant eats too many eels(鳗)” spell out the message “Meet me.”

Another way is to use symbols to ______ specific letters of the alphabet. You might represent each letter with a number, for example. Let’s number the letters of the alphabet, in order, from 1 to 26., If we replace each letter with a number, the message “Meet me” would read “13, 5, 5, ______, 13, 5.”

A code uses symbols to replace words, phrases, or sentences. To read the message of a real code, you must have a code book. With a code book, you might write down words that would be ______ as other words. For example, “bridge” might refer to “meet” and “out” might mean “me.” The message “Bridge out” would have meaning of “Meet me”. It is very hard to break a code with out the code book. Actually, it is also hard to keep a code book secret for long. ______, codes must be changed frequently.

1A.goes aheadB.takes the place ofC.falls behindD.depends on

2A.sendB.takeC.translateD.hide

3A.stand forB.make upC.deal withD.find out

4A.17B.18C.19D.20

5A.explainedB.misunderstoodC.rememberedD.acted

6A.HoweverB.ThereforeC.In additionD.Otherwise

Thirty engineers were working as a team in a company. They were young and e1 to learn. The management decided to teach them about finding real solutions to problems. One day, the team was called for a game in a hall. They were quite surprised and all reached the hall holding v2 thoughts. As they entered, they found a box placed in the center, full of flat balloons.

The manager asked everyone to pick a balloon and how it up. Then they were asked to write their names on their respective(各自的)balloons c3 so that the balloons wouldn’t blow out. All tried, but not everyone was successfully. Five balloons blew out due to pressure(压力).Those who failed to m4 their names on the balloons were ruled out of the game. As a result, 25 engineers came to the next level. All the balloons carrying their names were collected and then put it into a room, here and there.

The engineers were told to p5 the balloon with his or her names on. All the 25 engineers began to search for the respective balloons in a rush. It was almost 15 minutes but no one was able to find the right one. The second level of the game was over. Then came the final level. The engineers were asked to pick any balloon and give it to the person named on the balloon. Within a c6 of minutes, all balloons reached the hands of the respective engineers.

The manager announced this was the real solution to the problem. Many times in our life, s7 and helping others give us real solutions to problems.
