Choose the best answer and complete the passage

Secret codes keep messages private. Banks, companies, and government agencies use secret codes in doing business, especially when information is sent by computer. People have used secret codes for thousands of years. As long as there have been codes, people have tried to break them. Code breaking never ______ code making. The science of creating and reading coded messages is called cryptography(密码系统).

There are three main types of cryptography. You can ______ a message by having the first letters of each word spell it out. For example, the first letters of “My elephant eats too many eels(鳗)” spell out the message “Meet me.”

Another way is to use symbols to ______ specific letters of the alphabet. You might represent each letter with a number, for example. Let’s number the letters of the alphabet, in order, from 1 to 26., If we replace each letter with a number, the message “Meet me” would read “13, 5, 5, ______, 13, 5.”

A code uses symbols to replace words, phrases, or sentences. To read the message of a real code, you must have a code book. With a code book, you might write down words that would be ______ as other words. For example, “bridge” might refer to “meet” and “out” might mean “me.” The message “Bridge out” would have meaning of “Meet me”. It is very hard to break a code with out the code book. Actually, it is also hard to keep a code book secret for long. ______, codes must be changed frequently.

goes ahead继续;takes the place of取代;falls behind落后;depends on取决于。根据“As long as there have been codes, people have tried to break them.”

根据“For example, the first letters of “My elephant eats too many eels(鳗)” spell out the message “Meet me.””

stand for代表;make up编造;deal with处理;find out发现。根据“If we replace each letter with a number, the message “Meet me” would read “13, 5, 5, ___4___, 13, 5.”” 故选A

根据“Let’s number the letters of the alphabet, in order, from 1 to 26.”

根据“For example, “bridge” might refer to “meet” and “out” might mean “me.” The message “Bridge out” would have meaning of “Meet me”.”例如,“bridge”可能指“meet”,“out”可能指“me”,“bridge out”的意思是“meet me”。 故选A

However 然而;Therefore因此,是副词,但有时具有连词作用;In addition另外;Otherwise否则。根据“Actually, it is also hard to keep a code book secret for long.”

Let’s number the letters of the alphabet, in order, from 1 to 26.

My name is Opal. Last summer my daddy sent me to the store for a box of cheese, some white rice, and two tomatoes and I came back with a dog. This is what happened: I walked into the vegetable section of the grocery store to pick out my two tomatoes and I almost bumped () right into the store manager. He was standing there all red-faced, screaming and waving his arms around. “Who let a dog in here?” he kept on shouting. “Who let a dog in here?”

At first, I didn’t see a dog. There were just a lot of vegetables on the floor, tomatoes and onions and green peppers. It seemed that all the employees were running around, waving their arms just the same way the store manager was waving his.

And then the dog came running around the corner. He was a big dog. And ugly. And he looked like he was having a real good time. His tongue was hanging out and he was wagging (摇摆) his tail. He suddenly stopped and smiled right at me. I had never before in my life seen a dog smile, but that is what he did. He pulled back his lips and showed me all his teeth. Then he wagged his tail so hard that he knocked some oranges off a shelf, and they went rolling everywhere, mixing in with the tomatoes and onions and green peppers.

The manager screamed, “Somebody get that dog!”

The dog went running over to the manager, wagging his tail and smiling. He stood up on his hind legs (后腿). You could tell that all he wanted to do was get face to face with the manager and thank him for the good time he was having in the store, but somehow he ended up knocking the manager over. And the manager must have been having a bad day, because lying there on the floor, right in front of everybody, he started to cry. The dog came to him, really concerned, and licked () his face.

“Please,” said the manager. “Somebody call the pound (流浪狗收留所).”

“Wait a minute!” I shouted. “__________________________________.”

1Opal walked into the store with a dog, didn’t she?

2What was the dog like?

3Why did the manager want to catch the dog?

4How did the dog feel in the store?

5What did Opal think of the dog? Why?

6What did Opal probably say at the end of the story?
