¡¾´ð°¸¡¿Me in the mirror

Looking at myself in the mirror, I know I am an outgoing girl. I like to make friends and I'm always ready to help them. So I'm very popular in my school. But I have a big problem, I'm less interested in my lessons and I can t concentrate in class. In my spare time I spend too much time on computer games, so I don' t get good grades which make my parents disappointed.

When I go to senior high school I hope to get along well with my classmates and try to make more friends. I hope we can help each other and learn from each other. I will make a good study resolution and try my best to go for it. I decide to have a healthier lifestyle. I'll spend more time on my schoolwork and develop good learning habits. I will concentrate more in class and finish my study tasks carefully. What's more, I will read more books and master good leaning methods. I hope to make great progress and make my parents proud of me.

¡¾ÌâÄ¿¡¿The story of the Mary Celeste is a very famous unsolved mystery. The story is about a sailing ship called the Mary Celeste and the strange disappearance of all the people on board the ship.

The ship sailed from New York on 7th November, 1872, for the port of Genoa in Italy. It was carrying a cargo (»õÎï) of 1,700 barrels of American alcohol which was worth 35,000 dollars. There were 10 people on board the ship: the captain, Briggs, his wife, Sarah, their two-year-old daughter, and seven crewmen. Briggs had a good fame as a captain. He was also a religious man who did not drink alcohol.

The mystery begins on 15th November, 1872. The Mary Celeste was between the Azores and the coast of Portugal when it was seen by the captain of another ship, Captain Morehouse. Captain Morehouse was immediately worried because he could see that the Mary Celeste was out of control. He was also very surprised because he knew that Captain Briggs was a good sailor. There were no distress (Çó¾È) signals from the Mary Celeste and no reply when Morehouse tried to make contact, so he decided to take a small boat and climb on board the Mary Celeste. There was nobody on board!

There didn¡¯t seem to be much wrong with the ship: it was not in danger of sinking, so there was no need for panic. However, the ship¡¯s register and other paperwork were missing; the navigation instruments were missing; and everything on the ship, including the captain¡¯s bed, was wet through. Another important fact is that there were no boats on board. And a strange fact is that when the cargo was finally unloaded in Genoa, nine barrels of alcohol were missing. Can we find an explanation which fits all the known facts?

Morehouse guessed that the crew must, for some reason, have thought that the boat was sinking and panicked. But why did they think it was sinking? It is possible that, as the cargo was alcohol, there might be an explosion which would cause everyone on board to panic. The crew might have climbed into the boat and tied the boat to the main ship while they checked if the ship really was sinking. Perhaps a storm broke the rope and left them all in a small boat on stormy seas.

It seems that 92 now, but I am sure that people will keep thinking of possible solutions, and the only limit to these solutions will be the human imagination!

Idioms are one of the hardest parts of learning a language. An idiom is a phrase which has a meaning, but the meaning is not clear from the words themselves. They are like puzzles. If you translate an idiom word for word, it sometimes makes no sense at all. That¡¯s why even native speakers can get confused when someone uses a phrase that they¡¯ve never heard of.

Here are four common English idioms every English student should know in a lot of situations.

1.Get your act together (Meaning: you need to improve your behaviour/work)

This might be something your teacher says to you if you score badly in an exam or if you misbehave in class. You can also use it to talk about people in general. For example, if your friend is being mean for no reason, then you can tell them that they need to get their act together.

2.Pull yourself together (Meaning: calm down)

It¡¯s not polite to say ¡°pull yourself together¡±to tell people to relax while they¡¯re overreacting (·´Ó¦¹ý¼¤). Only use this if you think the person you are speaking to is getting upset over something important. When your friend tells you that their close relative has died, it is NOT the time to tell them to pull themselves together.

3.I¡¯m feeling under the weather (Meaning: I¡¯m sick)

Yes, it¡¯s longer and more difficult to say than ¡°I¡¯m sick¡±, but if your English teacher asks you why you haven¡¯t done your homework, he or she is more likely to forgive (ÔÁÂ) you if you say that you were feeling under the weather.

4.Break a leg (Meaning: good luck!)

This is perhaps one of the most confusing yet well-known English idioms. If someone says this to you, do not think they are frightening you; they are just wishing you luck. It is most often used for people wishing success to actors and actresses before they perform on the stage, but it can be said in other situations, too.

All in all, learning a new language can be challenging. It¡¯s certainly not a piece of cake, especially when there are so many confusing idioms. However, with enough hard work and interest, you will succeed in no time. Break a leg!
