If I can give up coffee, anyone can! I was completely addicted (上瘾). I drank coffee all day. I depended on it for everything. Without coffee, I became sad and anxious. I would feel nervous if I couldn’t get some coffee before an important event like giving a speech or taking an exam.

It took countless tries before I realized how to give up coffee. Between each try, I learned a little bit more. Here’s how I did it.

Coffee Addiction Knowledge

The first step is to learn about what you are dealing with. Caffeine is a drug. The human body gets addicted to it easily. That’s why you feel good when you get your first cup of coffee in the morning and it’s why you feel bad when you try to give it up. There are emotional addictions to the caffeine as well. Some people believe that with the caffeine you will perform better and have more confidence.

Gradually Cut the Amount and Then Replace (替代)It with Green Tea

You can give up coffee suddenly, but why put yourself through that unless you need an unpleasant experience? You can follow these two steps.

1) Gradually cut the amount of coffee you drink according to a plan. Let’s say, you normally drink 5 cups of coffee a day. Over a one-week period, cut out one cup ________ so that by the sixth day you’re at zero.

2) On your first day without coffee replace it with green tea. Green tea has the lowest amount of caffeine of most teas, but don’t expect any similar coffee taste.

Bamboo is a kind of wild grass. There are more than 1450 species of bamboo that grow across the world. It is hollow(空的), so it is very light.

For thousands of years, bamboo has been used in many different ways—from food to medicine to clothing. It is also used for furniture or man-made building products such as flooring and window covers. However, bamboo is not often used as a building material in the developed world.

Kent Harries, a professor at the University of Pittsburgh, sees bamboo as a great building material because of the following.

First, it is strong. The strength of at least three species of bamboo is similar to steel. Besides its strength, Harries says that bamboo has other features that make it a great building material. He says it can keep its shape and strength even under pressure.

Second, it’s very tall. It can grow up to 20 meters and it supports its own weight, even in the strong wind.

Thirdbamboo also grows quickly. Bamboo that is suitable for construction needs much less resources than wood. It lives on the rainwater, spring water and sunlight. The harvest cycle of bamboo is about 3 years. Softwoods such as pine (松树) and spruce(云杉) have a harvest cycle of about 10 years. And hardwoods that come from flowering plants such as maple(枫树) and walnut(胡桃树) need more than 30 years.

People usually think bamboo is only for poor people. But in many countriesbamboo is used for building floors and roofs and even beautiful houses.

When Dr, Karen McComb came to Amboseli Park her first task was to learn the names of the one hundred or so elephants most often seen.

Scientists working in the park have learned to study elephants by watching them up close. They have a list of almost one thousand elephants. There are records for all of the elephants born since 1972. Amboseli was a good place for Dr. McComb to study animal communications. Elephants were a great subject because their lifestyle depends on communication.

Dr. McComb and her team had learned a lot about elephant communication, but they kept on thinking about one puzzling (困惑的) watch. Some families were better at distinguishing (区别) calls of friends from those of strangers.

What made some families smarter than others? The scientists searched their records for an explanation. To their surprise, there was only one factor (因素) of importance: The "smartest" families always had the oldest grandmothers. A family, as it did in all other activities, waited for some signal (信号) from the grandmother when they heard a strange contact call. And older, more experienced grandmothers were better at telling whether other elephants were strangers or friends just by their calls.

That was an important discovery. It showed how an elephant family depends on the experience of the grandmother.

回答下面5个问题,每题答案不超过5个词。

1How do scientists working in the park study elephants?

2What did Dr. McComb study?

3What did Dr. McComb and her team do for an explanation?

4Who does everyone in elephant families listen to?

5What does an elephant family depend on in all the activities?

【题目】I think it is safe to say that snakes are not popular among most people, It would be hard to find a person who is neutral( 中立的 ),or simply doesn’t care one way or the other, What I wonder is why something even without legs causes such great fear.

Snakes are quite useful, but that doesn’t seem to matter, Snakes help control the population of mice. Without snakes, perhaps we would find mice everywhere, Most of us, however, would rather see a mouse than a snake, The poison argument( 毒性的争论 )is a strong one, Some snakes are poisonous, and this causes people’s death , However, the poisonous snakes are only a small number. We can’t say all the snakes are bad just because of a few dangerous ones. And what do we do with the people who really like snakes? They like snakes even more strongly than we dislike them. These people learn about them, find them out, and watch them carefully, Why? The only reason I can think of is that these people are open-minded, They are able to put aside differences and welcome the snake as a friend.

Whatever the reason for our like or dislike, snakes do something good in the circle of life.

They would prefer to be left alone, and that is what we should do, If you’re lucky, you might not run across more than a few of them in a lifetime, That would be fine with most of us.

1How does the writer describe the appearance of snakes?

A. Something even without legs.

B. Something not popular among people.
