[ 写作点评 ] Hang Up and Drive

You see it every day, especially in freeway traffic. A car is weaving back and forth, speeding up then slowing down, or suddenly stopping. No, it’s not a drunk driver. It’s a cellphone driver. Cellphones are used everywhere, but on the road they are very dangerous.

The New England Journal of Medicine reported that "drivers using a cellphone were four times more likely to have an accident than those not using a phone". The major problem is that the driver’s attention is not focused on the road, but on his or her conversation. Cellphone drivers probably drive too fast or too slow, make improper turns, run red lights, or even stop at green ones. It’s not only annoying but dangerous. Cellphone-related accidents include rear-ending vehicles, running off a road and crashing into trees, fences, and buildings. Until we take action to pass new laws, drivers need to be more responsible when using cellphones. The American Automobile Association recommends that drivers stop the car before using a cellphone, have a passenger use it for them, or use voice mail to answer calls. Another suggestion is to keep the phone off while moving or simply not to use it in the car. Before using a cellphone, drivers should think that, "Is this call really that important?"

Cellphones can be important in emergencies, but drivers need to use them wisely. As professional car racer John Andretti says, "Driving safely is your first responsibility."The best road to safety is to just hang up and drive.

Organizers of a top fashion show in Spain say they will reject models who are too thin. They think some models are too thin and that encourages eating disorders in girls.

The Association of Fashion Designers of Spain said it intended to make "an image of beauty and health"for the fashion show.

Cindi, an editor for Glamourmagazine, says some models are teens who haven’t developed their bodies yet, and it’s dangerous for them to try to be thin. "You hear stories of girls who come to models and are falling down because they haven’t eaten for days."

"The popularity of being thin in our culture has created a situation where the majority of girls and women don’t like their bodies. Dissatisfaction with the body can lead girls to very unhealthy behavior to try to control weight,"says Sarah, a body-image researcher at Kenyon College. Sarah and her colleagues did some research about the media’s effect on girls. They studied more than 6,000 girls, and found those who read the fashion magazines most were more likely to try to be thinner, despite health risks.

Sarah believes it’s fine for girls to want to feel pretty when they are teenagers, but that shouldn’t be their first tasks. Young girls shouldn’t spend all their time choosing the right clothes and trying to dance like a MTV girl.

It’s not surprising that women want to be thin and beautiful, because the society focuses so much upon a woman’s appearance. "We know more about women who look good than we know about women who do well,"says Audrey, a former teen model.
