14．How to choose appropriate books for English beginners
It is a conventional wisdom that in order to have a good command of English，the most effective way is to read English books widely．（36）F I would like to share some of my experience．
Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice was my first English novel．It is recommended by many English teachers and professors as an ideal book for English learners．（37）AI had great difficulty in understanding the novel，let alone enjoying it．It's not the vocabulary that troubled me，but rather the way Austen constructs sentences，and her way of thinking，which seemed too remote to me at that time．
My fading enthusiasm was much recovered after reading Hemingway's novel Farewell to Arms．No long and complicated sentences．And I particularly liked his concise and straightforward style．（38）G I do not mean to exclude（排除） classical novels for ever．Actually，the second reading of Pride and Prejudice greatly pleased me（probably the result of my improved English comprehension）．It is only that classical novels are less accessible to beginners due to their language styles and social background．
（39）E In fact，if you limit yourself to novels you will miss a lot of treasures．English essays can at once inform you，entertain you，and improve your taste in English．Here comes my second suggestion-essays are necessary．
My last advice is never to follow others'recommendations and opinions blindly．We should be open to various ideas，but always think and determine for ourselves．（40）CWith that in mind，we are bound to find out our favorite writers through reading and develop our fine taste in English．

13．A little girl whose parents had died lived with her grandmother and slept in an upstairs bedroom．
One night there was a fire in the house and the grandmother died while trying to rescue the child．The fire spread quickly，and the situation was terrible．
Neighbors called the fire department，then stood helplessly by，unable to enter the house because flames blocked all the entrances．The little girl appeared at an upstairs window，crying for help，just as word spread among the crowd that the firefighters would be delayed a few minutes because they were all at another fire．

An investigation revealed that the child had no living relatives，and weeks later a meeting was held in the town hall to determine who would take the child into their home and bring her up．
A teacher said she would like to raise the child．She pointed out that she could ensure her a good education．A farmer offered her an upbringing（教养） on his farm．He pointed out that living on a farm was healthy and satisfying．Others spoke，giving their reasons why it was to the child's advantage to live with them．
Finally，the town's richest resident rose and said，"I can give this child all the advantages that you have mentioned here，plus money and everything that money can buy．"
Throughout all this，the child remained silent，her eyes on the floor．
"Does anyone else want to speak？"asked the meeting chairman．A man came forward from the back of the hall．He walked slowly and appeared to be in pain．
