19.Students and Technology in the Classroom
I love my Black berry-it's my little connection to the large world that can go anywhere with me.I also love my laptop computer,as it holds all of my writing and thoughts.Despite this love of technology,I know that there are times when I need to move away from these devices(设备) and truly communicate with others.
On occasion,I teach a course called History Matters for a group of higher education managers. My goals for the class include a full discussion of historical themes and ideas.Because I want students to thoroughly study the material and exchange their ideas with each other in the classroom,I have a rule-no laptops,iPads, phones, etc. When students were told my rule in advance of the class, some of them were not happy.
Most students assume(假设) that my reasons for this rule include unpleasant experiences in the past with students misusing technology. There's a bit of truth to that. Some students assume that I am anti-technology.There's no truth in that all.I love technology and try to keep up with it so I can relate to my students.
The real reason why I ask students to leave technology at the door is that I think there are very few places in which we can have deep conversations and truly engage complex ideas.Interruptions by technology often break concentration and allow for too much dependence on outside information for ideas.I want students to dig deep within themselves for inspiration and ideas.I want them to push each other to think differently and to make connections between the course material and the class discussion.
I've been teaching my history class in this way for many years and the evaluations reflect student satisfaction with the environment that I create.Students realize that with deep conversation and challenge, they learn at a level that helps them keep the course material beyond the classroom.
I'm not saying that I won't ever change my mind about technology use in my history class, but until I hear a really good reason for the change,I'm sticking to my plan.A few hours of technology-free dialogue is just too sweet to give up.

14.How to choose appropriate books for English beginners
It is a conventional wisdom that in order to have a good command of English,the most effective way is to read English books widely.(36)F I would like to share some of my experience.
Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice was my first English novel.It is recommended by many English teachers and professors as an ideal book for English learners.(37)AI had great difficulty in understanding the novel,let alone enjoying it.It's not the vocabulary that troubled me,but rather the way Austen constructs sentences,and her way of thinking,which seemed too remote to me at that time.
My fading enthusiasm was much recovered after reading Hemingway's novel Farewell to Arms.No long and complicated sentences.And I particularly liked his concise and straightforward style.(38)G I do not mean to exclude(排除) classical novels for ever.Actually,the second reading of Pride and Prejudice greatly pleased me(probably the result of my improved English comprehension).It is only that classical novels are less accessible to beginners due to their language styles and social background.
(39)E In fact,if you limit yourself to novels you will miss a lot of treasures.English essays can at once inform you,entertain you,and improve your taste in English.Here comes my second suggestion-essays are necessary.
My last advice is never to follow others'recommendations and opinions blindly.We should be open to various ideas,but always think and determine for ourselves.(40)CWith that in mind,we are bound to find out our favorite writers through reading and develop our fine taste in English.

A.But my experience was somewhat disastrous.
B.So one must read as many books as possible.
C.As a saying goes,one man's meat is another man's poison.
D.Anyway,novels are not good material for English learning.
E.However,reading novels is not the only way to improve your English.
F.Yet one may be at a loss to choose the appropriate books,especially as a beginner.
G.So as a beginner,you'd better choose contemporary novels instead of classical ones.

Part 3is Places:In this part,too many different kinds of English are shown,some informal and some formal.There is the informal English of a holiday postcard.There is also the formal English in a letter of complaint.
Part 4is Things:You will find some descriptive writing in this part.There are descriptions of clothes and of a computer.
You can do these tests in any order you like,or you can do all the tests with a formal or informal text.I enjoyed writing this book and I hope you enjoy using it,

18.Most episodes(情况)of absent-mindedness-forgetting where you left something or wondering why you just entered a room-are caused by a simple lack of attention,says Schacter."You're supposed to remember something,but you haven't encoded (译成密码)it deeply."
Encoding,Schacter explains,is a special way of paying attention to an event that has a major impact(影响)on recalling it later.Failure to encode properly can create annoying situations.If you put your mobile phone in a pocket,for example,and don't pay attention to what you did because you're involved in a conversation,you'll probably forget that the phone is in the jacket now hanging in your wardrobe(衣柜)."Your memory itself isn't failing you,"says Schacter."Rather,you didn't give your memory system the information it needed."

"Visual cues can help prevent absent-mindedness",says Schacter."But be sure the cue is clear and available,"he cautions.If you want to remember to take a medication(药物)with lunch,put the pill bottle on the kitchen table-don't leave it in the medicine chest and write yourself a note that you keep in a pocket.
Another common episode of absent-mindedness:walking into a room and wondering why you're there.Most likely,you were thinking about something else."Everyone does this from time to time,"says Zelinski.The best thing to do is to return to where you were before entering the room,and you'll likely remember.

65-year-old Bobby Johnson was in Long's first college class.He lives in Atlanta and drives 3hours to practice.Johnson said he does it because Long's"such a unique character and I just admire him so much."
Many people do it for the same reason."He's the single biggest influence on my career.""He was a father figure to me.He's just a genuine person."
