16.Grasse has always been associated with smell.In the Middle Ages it smelt particularly unpleasant due to its leather tanning (制革) industry.The nobility (贵族) only rarely visited the pretty and charming town to pick up their handmade,tanned leather gloves.Compared with the large area of land in the surrounding countryside,Grasse was certainly a necessary evil(邪恶) with no self-respecting noble owning buildings there.
Molinard,a Grasse tanner himself,created the first Grasse perfume (香水).Not the perfume we now associate with Grasse to be worn on the skin but a perfume to be put into the leather itself to cover the smell of the tanning process.Word spread like wildfire among the nobility about the designer perfumed gloves.Molinard offered a pair of his gloves to Catherine de Medici (the Queen),who gave plenty of praise to her Grasse fragranced gloves; she almost single-handedly assured (确保) Grasse's reputation as the perfume capital of the world.Thanks to Gatherine de Medici,Grasse merchants were encouraged to grow the fragrant plants that tanners needed to supply perfumed leather to the nobility.
Grasse has four perfume factories and perfumeries as well as a perfume school and a perfume museum.Fragonard's perfume museum is located on the first floor of its perfume factory and displays an amazing private collection of perfume bottles,presentation boxes,documents and equipment that tell the history of perfume making from its earliest beginnings to the present day.The perfume museum is open every day,Sundays and public holidays included.
Galimard perfume factory recently opened its"Studio des Fragrances",where its professional"Nose"(an artist able to distinguish a vast number of different perfumes and combining them to create designer perfumes) takes the visitor through the essential steps to create their own designer perfume.Every visitor discovers the different base products and techniques that combine to create their own Grasse perfume.The"Nose"explains to the visitor the structure of a good Grasse fragrance,that is to say,Top Note,Middle Note and Base Note.He then concludes by describing the basic principles of achieving a good formula (配方).The visitor then follows their own imagination and creates their own Grasse perfume which they can take home in a perfume bottle personalized with their name or the name they have chosen for their creation.
