Many of the expressions using water haven’t enjoyable meanings in English.
“Hot water” was used five hundred years ago to mean being in trouble. One story says it got the meaning from throwing hot water down on enemies (敌人) attacking a town. That happens no longer, but we still get into hot water.
When we are in hot water, we are in trouble. It can be any kind of trouble, serous or not so serious. A person who breaks a rule can be in hot water with the police. A young boy can be in hot water with his mother if he walks in a house with dirty shoes.
“Water over the dam(水坝)” is another expression about a past event. It’s something that finishes and it cannot be changed. The expression comes from the idea - water has run over a dam and it cannot be brought back again. When a friend is troubled by a mistake he has made, you might tell him to forget about it. You can say “It’s water over the dam.”
“Throwing cold water” means “not to like an idea”. For example, you want to buy a new car because the old one has some problems, but your parents throw cold water on the idea, because they think a new car costs too much.

Street Markets(市场) around the World
There are many ways of shopping. You can shop by telephone, by post or through your home computer. But for many people, the most exciting way to shop is also the most traditional(传统的)—at a street market. You can find markets anywhere in the world. Here are four of them:

There are many “floating markets” in Asia; maybe the most unusual is in Thailand(泰国), at a place called Damnoen Saduak. It’s open from six in the morning to the noon every day. People sell fresh apples, bananas and things like these from their boats.

Many Belgians(比利时人) say that the Grand Place is the most beautiful place in the world. It is the home of a colourful market. It’s open every day except(除了) Monday. On Monday, there’s a wonderful bird market!

One of the world’s most famous markets is in Mexico City—the Sonora Market. You can buy toys, birds and anything you need. It’s open every day from early in the morning till late at night.

In London, on Saturdays and Sundays, thousands of young people from all over the city travel to the Camden Market. It’s the place to go for street fashion, CDs and tapes. Many people also go there for fun.

A man came home from work late, tired, to find his 5-year-old son waiting for him at the door.
“Daddy, how much money do you make an hour?”
“If you must know, I make $20 an hour,”
“Oh,” the little boy replied, with his head down. He thought for a moment, looked up and said, “Daddy, could you lend me $10?”
The father was furious, “If you asked for the money to buy a toy or some other rubbish, then go straight to your room and think about why you are being so selfish(自私的)!”
The little boy quietly went to his room and shut the door. After about an hour or so, the father calmed(平静)down, and started to think, “Maybe he really needs to buy something and he didn’t really ask for money very often.” So he went to the little boy’s room.
“Sorry! Maybe I was too hard on you just now.” said the man, “Here’s $10.”
“Oh, thank you, Daddy!” he said happily. Then, the boy took out some coins. When the father found that the boy already had money, he got angry again.
“Why do you want more money since you already have some?” the father shouted angrily.

Writing a thank-you letter can be a great way to express (表达)thanks  for a favor (帮助;恩惠) someone did for you. Consider these following steps when writing your letter, which will help make your thank-you letter more meaningful (有意义的) and sincere(真诚的).
Before you start, buy some special stationery, such as nice paper or blank cards. The stationery doesn’t have to be expensive, since even one-dollar card can be very nice. And you must decide whether you prefer to type your letter or write it by yourself. Handwriting has a more personal feeling, while a printed(打印的) thank-you letter looks more professional (专业的).
Now, you can start writing. You should express your purpose(目的)  from the beginning. Start your letter by thanking the person for the gift or service he or she provided. Then you should explain how you plan to use the gift or service, or explain how the gift or service has already been used. What’s more, you can also express your feelings on the gift or service by saying that “It was a wonderful birthday present…” It also helps to mention a personal feeling such as “I was just so happy with the party.” In the end, you should mention that you want to see or talk to the person again soon. For close relatives and friends, you can also tell them how much you miss them and express regret(遗憾) that their visit was short.
Sign your thank-you letter personally and with a heart. Try “Love”, “Yours truly”, or “Take care” instead (代替) of “Sincerely” as it is more for business.
In this way, you will always maintain (维持) a pleasant relationship(关系) with your friends and relatives.

How do you get on with your teachers? Every day, we spend hours with our teachers at school. We learn from them, and they teach us to be good people. The relationship between students and teachers is very important.
Teachers care about our studies and lives, and it seems they know everything about the subjects they teach. They also have the right to decide who should be the class leaders or represent the class to take part in the activities.
So, many students want to be the teacher’s pet. We show teachers great respect. In class, we obey the rules and keep quiet if the teacher doesn’t ask us to speak. We seldom have opinions different from our teachers'. When they make a mistake, we are afraid to point it out. Some of us don’t want to contact teachers after class because we don’t want to bother them.
At American schools, the situation is a little different. Teachers and students are more like friends. Calling a teacher by his or her name is common. In class, students express their opinions freely and challenge teachers when they don’t agree. If it turns out that a teacher made a mistake, the teacher will say "sorry" in front of the whole class. Students and teachers also communicate through e-mail, Facebook or Twitter after class. They chat about studies and life experiences.
Teachers are like our parents and our friends. So we should respect our teachers.
