It seems that there’s a good reason why dogs are always seen as man’s best friend. Scientists have found that dogs are the only animals that can read emotion(情感)in faces much like humans. The finding suggests that like an understanding friend, dogs can see if we are happy, sad, pleased or angry.
When humans look at a new face, their eyes usually look across the left, falling on the right hand side of the person’s face first. A possible reason for this is that the right side of the human face is better at expressing emotions.
Scientists have now shown that pet dogs also have “left gaze bias(左视偏好)”, but only when looking at human faces. No other animal has been known to do like this before. Dr. Kun Guo showed 17 dogs pictures of human, dog and monkey faces as well as something else with his team. The dogs’ eyes and heads show a strong left gaze bias when the animals see human faces. But this did not happen when they were shown other pictures, including those of dogs.
Guo suggests that over thousands of years living with humans, dogs may have developed the left gaze bias as a way to guess our emotions.
“Recent studies show that the right side of our faces can express emotions better than the left. If  true, then it makes sense for dogs and humans to see the right hand side of a face first.”

At the moment, it may be difficult to imagine, but many people believe that, by the year 2100, we will live on the planet Mars. Our own planet, Earth, is becoming more and more crowded and polluted. Luckily, we can start again and build a better world on Mars.
First of all, transport should be much better. At present, our spaceships are too slow to carry large numbers of people to Mars—it takes months. However, by 2100, spaceship can travel at half the speed of light. It might take us two or three days to get to Mars!
Secondly, humans need food, water and air to live. Scientists should be able to develop plants that can be grown on Mars. These plants will produce the food and air that we need. However, can these plants produce water for us? There is no answer now.
There is a problem for us to live on Mars. Mars suck us much less than the Earth does. This will be dangerous because we could easily jump too high and fly slowly away into space. To prevent this, humans on Mars have to wear special shoes to make themselves heavier.
Life on Mars will be better than that on Earth in many ways. People will have more space. Living in a large building with only 10 bedrooms is highly possible. Many people believe that robots will do most of our work, so we have more time for our hobbies.
There will probably be no school on Mars. Every student will have a computer at home which is connected to the internet. They can study, do their homework and take exams in online schools. Each student will also have their own online teacher called “e-teacher”.
However, in some ways, life on Mars may not be better than that on the earth today. Food will not be the same—meals will probably be in the form of pills and will not be as delicious as they are today. Also, space travel will make many people feel ill. The spaceship will travel fast, so the journey to Mars will probably be very uncomfortable.

It’s duty of every man to work. The life of a lazy man is of no use to himself and to others. If the man is too lazy to work, he will usually become a not useful man. Everyone, when he is young, should learn some useful work.
But it’s not enough for a man to learn some kind of work. He should put his heart and soul (精力) into his work, and not waste his free time. “Work while you work and play while you play” is as good rule for young people as old.
There is no better to help to diligence than the habit of early rising, and this, just like all other good habits, is most easily formed in youth (青年). There is an English say “Lost time never returns.” This means that everybody must be diligent, and make good use of time. One must study hard when one is young so that one can make great progress, succeed in life and become useful to one’s country. So we can say that diligence is the mother of success.

As we know, it is not easy to build a satellite(卫星). Building a traditional satellite usually takes years. The costs can be as high as $250 million or more. Most members of the design teams have worked in the field for a long time. They hold advanced degrees(学历) in math, science, or engineering.

But things are changing. High costs, unusual educational needs and long start-up times are no longer an obstacle(障碍) to space exploration. The scientists have developed a new type of tiny, inexpensive earth-orbiting(轨道) satellite.
So far, college students have built and launched(发射) several cube-shaped satellites, or CubeSats. At least 15 more are ready to go. Those already in orbit take pictures, collect information and send it back to the earth, just as regular satellites do.
But you might not even have to wait until you get to college to start designing and building your own satellite. A new program called KatySat aims to get teenagers to take part in. When kids understand what satellites can do, the kinds of ideas they’ll come up with may be countless.
Education isn’t the only aim of CubeSats because these tiny, technology-filled boxes are  inexpensive to build and can be put together quickly, they’re perfect for testing new technologies that might one day be used on major space tasks.
The biggest challenge now is to find ways to bring the satellites back to the earth after a year or two. Or space junk could gradually increase because CubeSats become more popular.
Nowadays, college and high school students are getting a chance to learn what it takes to explore in space. Someday—perhaps a lot sooner that you imaging—you might get to design, build and launch your own satellite. If you do, you’re sure to have fun. And you might also get crazy about science for life.

A PLANE crashed (坠机) in Libya on May 12, killing 103 people on board. The only survivor is a 10-year-old Dutch boy.
This is not the only example of a crash in which everyone but a child died. A 12-year-old girl was the only person to survive a 2009 air crash in the Indian Ocean. When a plane crashed over Sudan in 2003, only a 3-year-old boy survived.
It's a question that leaves safety experts puzzled. So farthere is not enoughhard evidence forthem to answer withany certainty.
Although unclear, there arereasons to suggestthat children maycope (应对) better than others.
Professor Ed Galea at the University of Greenwich, suggested children would be cocooned(被紧紧抱住) within their seat and therefore might be less probably to receive injuries.
"With an adult with their head above the seat and legs on the floor, they will receive some kind of injury landing on your head and legs," he told the BBC.
"It would be miraculous (奇迹的) to survive that, but there have been cases(情况) of people falling into trees. A smaller body would mean it's more possible the tree would break your fall," he explained.
Studies found other factors (因素), besides luck, influence the chances of surviving a crash.
One is seating. A study of plane crashed conducted by Poplar Mechanics found that people sitting toward the back of the plane were more probably to survive than those sitting toward the front. A survey conducted by researchers at the University of Greenwich in the UK found that what matters most is how close you are to an exit(出口). Sit in five rows(排) of an exit, and you've got better-than-even chances of surviving. Sit in six rows or more away, and your chances are less than 50-50.
Other factors for surviving a plane crash include wearing a seat belt, paying attention to flight instructions and staying alert(警觉) during taking off and landing. And of course, don't fly with airlines that are the most pobably to crash.
