How Children Succeed , by Paul Tough

Journalist Tough spent five years reporting his previous(先前的)book. Whatever It Takes ? a description of education activist Geoffrey Canada and the families influenced by his organization, the Harlem Children's Zone. In this 2012 follow-up. Tough sets out to answer the difficult questions raised by Whatever It Takes : Why do some kids~-particularly poor ones—succeed while others fail? And how can parents and educators help guide more chil-dren towards success?

The Death and Life of the Great American School System , by Diane Ravitch

Ravitch, a professor in New York University, takes a hard look at how public education has changed over the past twenty years, offering a reasoned explanation of popular policies, such as the emphasis (强调)on testing, and a solution to how to improve America's schools.

Saving the School , by Michael Brick

When Anabel Garza became headteacher of John H. Reagan High School in Austin, Texas, she was faced with a large number of seemingly-very difficult problems: a high dropout rate (辍学率)and low test scores. But as Brick wrote Saving the School , a first-hand account of a year in the life of John H. Reagan High School, Garza, along with other teachers, was determined to turn things around for her school and her students. The Flat World and Education , by Linda Darling-Hammond While scores on the tests required by "No Child Left Behind" have steadily (平稳地)risen, America's students are always falling behind on in?ternational testing measures. Why? According to Stanford education profes?sor Darling-Hammond, "it's because the American schools, designed at the turn of the last century, are in need of a complete change. ,, In this book. she describes the latest education models used by schools all over the world, which she argues could offer a long-term road map to changing the American public school system.

Dr Julie Coulton, a British psychologist, focuses her research on the ex?traordinary function of the play in the physical and spiritual development of children and Martti Bergson from the University of Helsinki shows that pla?ying outside, in the open air, contributes to a better development of the brain.

Thus parents must encourage their children to spend as much time as possible in the open air, and at the same time, to ask schools and kindergar?tens to assure the small playground outside. Recent statistics (数据)and studies show an alarming increase of the number of hours spent by children in front of the TV and the computer and a decrease of the time spent out?side.

As a consequence more and more children suffer from eye problems and have to wear glasses. Also the problem of fatness among children concerns many parents who don't know what to do to make their children eat healthy and balanced.

Children need a space where to develop their creativity and parents should encourage them all the time. Too many rules hold back the children's personality and creativity and prevent them developing the desire to know, to find out, to learn.

If you tell your child so many times : " Don't do that, don't mess the room, don't go there... ,,, he will lose the desire to do something, even any?thing. Parents must watch their children without suffocating(窒息)them. Should you consider they mustn't do that or this, you have to logically ex?plain them your reasons and they will understand.

Through playing a child learns how to communicate, how to take deci?sions. Playing is connected to the intellectual, emotional and social progress of the child. Playing lets your children learn how to express their feelings.

Good relationships are definitely good sources of happiness in life. We all want happy relationships but if we do not keep that relationship alive, it can also be one of the most distraught things in life. There may be no hard and fast rules in making good relationships, as each of us has different pref?erences and points of view as to what is a great relationship. The following are some major key players in making relationships work.

It is often said that building good relationships is all about communica?tion. Good communication indeed governs a good relationship—knowing the right thing to say, when to say it, how to say it, and accepting some things that are better left unsaid. I personally think communication must be broad?ened because relationships involve more decisions to make. From study to work* from money to entertainment and even in things about yourself or about your friends that you do not know, communication is essential in these aspects of the relationships.

Of course, being with someone is not saying that you totally agree with him or her all the time. You and your friends come from different family backgrounds, raised in different environments so there may be disagree?ments here and there. However, it is important in making relationships work to express disagreements without pushing the relationship to end. Again, good communication and learning to compromise(妥协)at times are essential.

As relationships last longer, you may also discover things about you and your friends that you may not have known before. Therefore, support?ing each other on both your "hidden selves" can also make a good relation?ship.

Love is an important aspect of building relationships and for me, I always believe that love needs open communication, respect, support and understanding each other in making relationships work.

I have been using the Internet since I was five years old, when my dad first sat me down in front of a computer and connected me to the World Wide Web.

I've always felt like a master of the Internet world.  MSN, Gmail, Facebook, Myspace―I've got it all under control. I thought there was noth?ing more to it besides checking my e-mail and wasting my time, until I was introduced to electronic commerce(e-commerce) : business on the Internet.

Some online businesses are run from one-room home offices. Others have hundreds of employees across the world. Have you ever heard of Ama?zon, com, Yahoo, com?

My friends often said they got cheap textbooks on Amazon, com, or had a good deal (交易)on Steve Madden shoes that were on sale at Steve Mad?den, com. Unfortunately for me, I continued my "e-commerceless" Web surfing, not knowing about all the deals I was missing out on.

That is, of course, until my sister finally told the idea to me.

"Why are all these packages arriving in the mail for you, Katy?"I asked her one day. Strange envelopes (信封)had been put on our doorstep for weeks now, each one always addressed to my sister; and we all know little sisters should never be getting more mail than their elders!

"Oh, it's the things I ordered online ! ,, she answered. I watched speechlessly as she opened them. There was no way our parents were let?ting her spend that much money―online or off!

"How much did all of these cost?"

"Oh, only about $ 15 in all!"she said excitedly. "Everything on eBay is on sale! It's a way better than going to the store."

I felt as if there had been a store right in my backyard that I had never walked into! That week, I ordered a used Spanish textbook for my summer course online for 10 per cent of the publishing price. A few days later, I bought an iPod protector and a book via the wonderful eBay. com.

The way to lift up your mood

Everyone has periods in their lives when everything seems very hard? when there's nobody to talk to and the mood (情绪)is just getting worse and worse. 16.___________________

The first thing you should try is socializing and thinking positively. It's very hard, because usually when we feel sad we lock ourselves at home and try to think about all the bad things we have. But if you try to force yourself
and call a friend for a cup of coffee, the chances for changing your mood into better are very good. Just try to avoid bad thoughts. 17.___________________

Not only giving gifts to yourself can lift up your mood. 19.___________________Think of your friends* family, relatives or even local charities (慈善机构), choose one person and give him/her a gift. It doesn't have to be something expensive or big. It may be just a little toy to your poor neighbour's child. Making another person feel happy will make you feel good in your heart and mind.

Take control of your feelings. Don't let them control you. 20.___________________Just follow the advice above, and start doing something.

We live in a sweet world. The average American kids eat more than 20 teaspoons of sugar per day, and adults eat 50% more sugar today thati they did in the 1970s. We all know that too much sugar isn^t good for us. But did we know it could be dangerous? A team of researchers at the University of Utah used mice to do a study on the bad effects of sugar. They found it could have serious effects on people's health.

Sugar is found not only in sweets and candies, but also in many house?hold items like pasta and crackers.

During the 58-week-long study, mice were fed a diet containing 25% more sugar. This percentage equals a healthy human diet along with three cans of soda daily. The team found that these mice were twice as likely to die as mice fed a similar diet without the sugar. Though the mice did not show signs of obesity or high blood pressure, male mice produced 25% fewer offspring (后代)than the other mice.

Scientists often use mice for research because they have a similar genetic(基因的)structure to humans. "Since most substances (物质)that are danger?ous in mice are also dangerous in people, it's likely that those physical prob?lems that cause those mice to have increased deaths also work in people," says study author James Ruff of the University of Utah. Findings from this study show bad effects that are not as noticeable as weight gain or heart problems. Sugar can contribute to long-term changes in the body that can change development and even shorten lives.

Cutting sugar out of the American diet altogether may be difficult. But making the effort to control our nation's sugar need will provide for a truly sweeter future.

It's really true what people say about English politeness: it's every?where. When squeezing (挤)past someone in a narrow aisle (通道),people say "sorry". When getting off a bus, English passengers say "thank you" rather than the driver. In Germany, people would never dream of doing these things.

After all, squeezing past others sometimes can't be avoided and the bus driver is merely doing his job. I used to think the same way, without ques?tioning it, until I started travelling to the British Isles and came to appreci?ate some more polite ways of communicating with people.

People thank each other everywhere in England, all the time. When people buy something in a shop, customers and retail assistants in most ca?ses thank each other twice or more. In Germany, it would be exceptional to hear more than one "thank you" in such a conversation. British students thank their lecturers when leaving the room. English employers thank their employees for doing their jobs, as opposed to Germans, who would normal?ly think that paying their workers money is already enough.

Another thing I observed during my stay was that English people rarely criticize others. Even when I was working and mistakes were pointed out to me, my employers stressed several times but none, of their explanations were intended as criticism. It has been my impression that by avoiding criti?cism, English people are making an effort to make others feel comfortable. This also is shown in other ways. British men still open doors for women, and British men are more likely to treat women to meals than German men. However, I do need to point out here that this applies to English men a bit more than it would to Scottish men. Yes, the latter are a bit tight-fisted.

8.  What is the author's attitude towards English politeness?

A. He appreciates it.           B. He gives no personal opinion.

C.  He thinks it is just an act.   D. He thinks it goes too far.

9.  What can we learn about customers and retail assistants in Germany?

  A.  It's always retail assistants who say thank you.

B.  Customers never say thank you to retail assistants.

C.  They always say thank you to each other.

D.  They may say thank you only once.

 10.  We can learn from the last paragraph that Scottish men___ .

 A.  are more likely to be involved in a fight !

 B.  are not so willing to spend money for women

C.  are more polite than English men

D.  treat women in a polite way

11.     The author develops the text through the method of____ .

A. giving comments              B. telling stories

C. making comparisons           D. giving reasons
