Dear Editor,

We had a discussion over whether it's necessary to carry out outer space exploration at a class meeting the other day.

Some of us think it important to research outer space. Firstly, people can get a better understanding of outer space through their exploration. Secondly, new re?sources can be found there for humans to use. Thirdly, this exploration can possibly bring about new living space for human life.

However, others don't believe so. They say this kind of exploration costs too much money. And it's very dangerous for astronauts to do such work.

I think people should do the exploration and such exploration into outer space is worth trying out.

Yours, Li Hua

It's really true what people say about English politeness: it's every?where. When squeezing (挤)past someone in a narrow aisle (通道),people say "sorry". When getting off a bus, English passengers say "thank you" rather than the driver. In Germany, people would never dream of doing these things.

After all, squeezing past others sometimes can't be avoided and the bus driver is merely doing his job. I used to think the same way, without ques?tioning it, until I started travelling to the British Isles and came to appreci?ate some more polite ways of communicating with people.

People thank each other everywhere in England, all the time. When people buy something in a shop, customers and retail assistants in most ca?ses thank each other twice or more. In Germany, it would be exceptional to hear more than one "thank you" in such a conversation. British students thank their lecturers when leaving the room. English employers thank their employees for doing their jobs, as opposed to Germans, who would normal?ly think that paying their workers money is already enough.

Another thing I observed during my stay was that English people rarely criticize others. Even when I was working and mistakes were pointed out to me, my employers stressed several times but none, of their explanations were intended as criticism. It has been my impression that by avoiding criti?cism, English people are making an effort to make others feel comfortable. This also is shown in other ways. British men still open doors for women, and British men are more likely to treat women to meals than German men. However, I do need to point out here that this applies to English men a bit more than it would to Scottish men. Yes, the latter are a bit tight-fisted.

 A.  are more likely to be involved in a fight !

In April 2014, the world's oldest known message in a bottle was dis?covered floating in the Baltic Sea. It had spent 101 years lost in the ocean! The message was finally sent to the author's granddaughter.

A German fisherman named Konrad Fischer found the brown boltle near Kiel* Germany. He said he nearly threw the bottle back into the water after pulling it out of a fishing net. Then he noticed something inside.

The bottle in good condition contained a Danish postcard with two Ger?man stamps, dated May 17, 1913. Although dampness had made most of the writing illegible(字迹模糊的),the readable part of the message asked whoever found it to return it to an address in Berlin. It even contained two stamps lo pay for postage.

From the address, researchers found that the postcard was written by a man named Richard Platz, who was 20 years old when he wrote the mes?sage. While he was hiking on the Baltic coast with a nature appreciation group, he threw the bottle into the sea. Then the researchers began a re?search for any living relatives of his. Sure enough, they were able to find his 62-year-old granddaughter, Angela Erdmann, who still lives in Berlin.

"It was almost unbelievable*" Erdmann said upon being presented with her grandfather's bottle and message. "That was a pretty moving moment. Tears rolled down my face."

Erdmann never knew her grandfather, who died in 1946, but says that the discovery of the bottle has made her want to learn more about him.

The bottle remained on display at the International Maritime Museum in Hamburg until May 1. After that, the researchers examined the postcard and tried to figure out the meaning of the rest of the message.
