【题目】 An Englishman was showing a foreign visitor around London. "What's this strange building?" asked the visitor. "This is the Tower of London." "I see. How long did it take you to build it?" "About 500 years." "In my country we can set it up in five months," said the visitor. Soon they came to St. Pail's Cathedral. "Very wonderful!" said the visitor. "How long did it take you to build it?" "Almost 40 years," said the Englishman. "In my country we can finish it in 40 days at most," said the visitor. This continued all day. They visited most famous buildings in the city. Every time they saw a new one, the visitor asked the same questions. Then he said that they could do the same thing much more quickly in his country. At last, the Englishman became angry with the visitor though he tried not to show it. A few days later, they came to the House of Parliament and the visitor asked his usual question, "What's it?"

The Englishman answered, "I have no idea. It wasn't there last night."

【题目】 I suddenly heard an elephant crying as though frightened. Looking down, I immediately recognized that something was wrong, and ran down to the edge of the near bank. There I saw Mashwe with her three-month-old calf struggling in the fast-rising water, and it was a life-and-death struggle. Her calf was floating and screaming with fear. Mashwe was as near to the far bank as she could get, holding her whole body against the rushing water, and keeping the calf pressed against her huge body. Every now and then the rushing water would sweep the calf away.

There was a sudden rise in the water and the calf was washed clean over the mother’s body and was gone. Mashwe turned quickly to reach it and pressed the calf with her head and trunk(象鼻) against the rocky bank. Then with a huge effort, she picked it up in her trunk and tried until she was able to place it on a narrow shelf of rock.

Just at this moment, she fell back into the river. If she were carried down, it would be certain death. I knew, as well as she did, that there was one spot(地点) where she could get up the bank, but it was on the other side from where she had put her calf.

While I was wondering what I could do next, I heard the sound of a mother’s love. Mashwe had crossed the river and got up the bank and was making her way back as fast as she could, roaring(吼叫) all the time, but to her calf it was music.

【题目】 The energy which the sun radiates(辐射) goes in every direction. But only a minute part of it falls on the earth. Even so, it radiates power of about 5,000,000 horsepower per square mile per day. The sun gives us as much energy every minute as mankind uses in a year. At present, we use this energy indirectly, and it is our final source of power.

Coal(煤) represents the chemical action of the sun on green plants thousands of years ago. Water power results from the rain formed by vapor when water changes into gas under the sunshine. Even windmills(风车磨坊) operate because of air current(流) starts moving by the different heating effects of the sun in different places.

Someday, through chemistry or some types of solar engine, we should use this great source of energy more directly. Already a scientist has worked out an engine, surprisingly doing well, in which the sun’s rays are concentrated through mirrors on water to create steam.

1What do the underlined words “a minute” mean in this passage?

A.一分钟B.一点点C.片刻D.一份笔记

2How much energy does the sun radiate every ten square miles per day?

A.About 5,000,000 horsepowerB.About 208,333 horsepower

C.About 100,000,000 horsepowerD.About 50,000,000 horsepower

3Which of the following statement is not true, according to the passage?

A.Even windmills turn because of the sun.

B.The sun produces enormous energy for man to make use of.

C.Someday man will be able to use 100% of the solar energy that gets to the earth.

D.The sun produces different heating effects in different places.

4This passage is mainly about _______.

A.water powerB.our final source of power

C.how water power is producedD.the amount of solar energy that can be used

【题目】 London’s Chinese community(社区) dates back to the 18th century, when a small number of Chinese sailors moved to the city to work in Limhouse, east London. As time went on, other Chinese people came to this area and Limhouse began to be known as “Chinatown”. However, London’s Chinese community remained very small for many years: at the start of the 20th century, there were just 545 Chinese people in Britain.

After the Second World War, many farmers in Hong Kong lost their jobs and came to London. As Limhouse had been almost destroyed during the war, they settled(定居) in a different area a part of central London near Leicester Square. This area is now what Londoners call Chinatown.

At first, the new immigrants(移民) found it difficult to get jobs. In the 1950s, however, a small Chinese restaurant opened in London. Many British people visited it and said that Chinese food was wonderful! Suddenly, Chinese restaurants and take-aways started opening in every part of the city. Instead of too little work, the new Chinese immigrants now found that they had too much! They worked as cooks, managers or waiters. Most of them enjoyed their lives and arranged their friends and relatives to join them from overseas.

As time went by, London’s Chinese community became more and more successful. The sons and daughters of the original restaurant workers studied and worked very hard. And most went on to get highly paid jobs. Many Chinese families left Chinatown and moved to the more expensive outskirts. Chinatown, however, is still as lively as ever.

1Why did many Chinese immigrants come to London in the 1950s?

A.Because it was easy for them to get jobs there.

B.Because Limhouse had been almost destroyed during the war.

C.Because many British people enjoyed Chinese food.

D.Because their children could study there and get highly paid jobs.

2In the 1950s, Chinese immigrants came to London and worked as ______.

A.sailorsB.farmers

C.sailors and farmersD.restaurant workers

3Where is London’s Chinatown now?

A.In the east of London. B.In Limhouse.

C.Not far from Leicester Square. D.Outside the city.
