According to a common saying, “Honesty is the best policy.”But in daily life, honesty can be difficult.Lying often seems like a good way to impress people or avoid blame for mistakes.1But besides all this, honesty really is worth the effort.

One clear reason for honesty is that lies are difficult to hide because they are harder to remember than the truth. If you make up a story, you have to remember all the details.2But if you promise to tell the truth, you will never have trouble remembering. This saves you effort and makes conversations less stressful for you.

3People who believe your lies might make bad decisions because of them. And a lie about someone else could destroy that person's good name.On a personal level, if your friends find out you lied to them, their feelings will be hurt. They will question whether they can trust you or wonder whether you care about them.

On the other hand, if you always tell the truth, you will develop your good name for honesty. 4Business deals, friendship, family and romantic relationships all depend on trust.

Honesty, however, doesn't mean that you have to say everything you think.5When you do that, you will feel more relaxed and enjoy stronger relationships.

A.This will help you in every area of your life.

B.Another clear reason to avoid lying is that lying can harm others.

C.And the more lies you tell, the more stories you have to remember.

D.Some people lie out of habit, without even realizing they're doing it.

E.Sometimes it's best to remain silent if your words might hurt someone else.

Atlantis, a beautiful and wealthy island, is supposed to exist over 11, 000 years ago. In the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, it was a center for trade. Its people were very wealthy and powerful. The rulers of Atlantis controlled their people and land, and their power spread to Europe and Africa.

The weather was very good in Atlantis, and therefore people could grow food all year around. Many different kinds of vegetables, fruits and nuts grew there, and a lot of different animals lived on the island, including elephants.

Atlantis was the home of Poseidon, the Greek God of the Sea. Poseidon had ten sons, who became the first rulers of Atlantis. The island’s many hills, fields and rivers were divided between the ten brothers. The eldest son, Atlas, was the first king of Atlantis. He controlled the island’s central hill and its area nearby.

At the top of the central hill, a temple was built in memory of Atlas’s father, Poseidon. Inside the temple was a huge gold statue of Poseidon. The rulers of Atlantis discussed laws in the temple.

For centuries the people of Atlantis lived simple, honest and happy lives. However, over time they began to change. They enjoyed the power they had and wanted to have more of it. When the God Zeus saw how corrupt (腐败) the people of Atlantis were, he was very angry and gathered the other gods together. At last the gods agreed with Zeus and decided to sink (下沉) the island. 【题目】 Giving up smoking is not only good for your heart and lungs (), it’s also good for your memory, according to a study by Northumbria University, Newcastle, UK. The research was published in the online edition (版本) of Drug and Alcohol Dependence. It shows that stopping smoking can strengthen someone’s ability to remember everyday things, according to Sciencedaily.com.

The research looked at three groups of people―27 smokers, 18 ex-smokers (已戒烟者) and 24 people who had never smoked. They were all asked to remember to do a series of tasks in 15 different locations on a university campus. For example, they had to check for text messages on their cell phones when they were getting close to the library, or remember to ask about the cost of membership when they arrived at the sports center.

The study found that smokers could remember just 59 percent of the tasks; people who used to smoke but had now given up remembered 74 percent; and those who had never smoked managed to remember 81 percent of the tasks.

Tom Heffernan, PhD, from the Drug and Alcohol Research Group at Northumbria University said:

Given that there are up to 10 million smokers in the UK and as many as 45 million in the US, it’s important to understand the effects smoking has on everyday cognitive function (认知能力).

The team is now planning to research how second-hand smoke can affect health and everyday memory.
