9.As life-saver Christopher Walsh rescued his brother and then his sister from the water of a river, his mother shouted to him,"I'm proud of you!"
His mother Beryl sat proudly and watched last night(80)D Christopher was given the‘Child of Courage'award by his favorite TV star.
Christopher was in the car with his mother, father, sister Rosie,10,and brother Mac,7,when his father drove into a metal barrier.
The family's car fell down a hill into the river,(81)C and landed with its wheels up.
Christopher, then 12,swam through a broken window and got out into the fresh air. Then he saw the rest of his family were still in the car-in the water.
He took a big(82)B and swam back to save first Mac,and then Rosie.Christopher said,"I didn't think about it and only knew I had to get them out.I was (83)B,but it was all happening so fast, and I didn't really think about the danger."
Christopher freed Mac to a safe place and then swam back to get non-swimmer Rosie, who was under the cold, cloudy water,in the car.
Christopher had to feel for her seatbelt because he could see (84)A.He took the seatbelt off her, then went up for air. Finally he went back to pull her out of the car.
Beryl said:"When I got to the side and looked back,I thought Christopher and Rosie had gone.I thought they were (85)D.Then I saw him come up out of the water like a dolphin, and I could see he had Rosie.I shouted across the river,‘I'm so proud of you!"
Christopher's father was badly hurt in the accident and was taken to a nearby hospital.

8.I was born an albino(白化病人) in Pennsylvania in 1945.No one in my family had ever known what an albino was and what it (35)Cto be albino.
My family and friends never treated me as (36)Delse.That was just about the best thing they could have done.It helped me trust myself,so when troubles came along,I could(37)Bthem.
Like most albinos,I had terrible eyesight, but the fact that I could hardly (38)Bdidn't trouble me that much.
Kids would make fun of me,calling me"Whitey".People stared at me when I held reading material right at the tip(尖) of my (39)Aso that I could see it well enough.Even when I was eight,movie-theater workers started asking me to pay full price because I"looked (40)A."
The worst part for me was that (41)Cmy eyesight was so bad,I couldn't play sports very well.I didn't (42)Dtrying,though.I shot hoops(篮球框) every day.And I studied hard.
Finally,I got better at school and loved it.By the time I got to college,I was double majoring(专业),going to summer school and (43)Bmyself with every activity I could find.I had learned to be proud of being an albino.I did my best to make"albino"a good word. And I decided to make my (44)Dwith my eyes-and in sports.
I couldn't see very well to play sports, but with a solid education and a drive to do it,I could make a living involved in the area I loved.I've done it now for over thirty years in print and in video, and now in cyberspace(网络空间).People make jokes about how I'm the only"blind editor"they know, but the jokes are of goodwill. Some of them are the signs of (45)A.
I was just a(an) (46)Calbino kid from the coal country of Pennsylvania.I now realize that being born an albino helped me to overcome difficulties, gain confidence and be proud of my personal achievement.

7.Frank's father was speaking to a friend, one day,on the subject of competition at school. He said that he could answer for it that envy(嫉妒) is not always connected with it.
He had been a (35)B many times, but had never felt envious of his successful competitors,"nor did my winning many a prize from my friend Birch,"said he,"ever lessen his (36)A for me."
In support of the truth of this,a friend who was(37)D related a story which had fallen under his own notice in a school in his neighborhood.
At this school the sons of several rich farmers, and others, who were poorer,
(38)D instruction.Frank listened with great attention while the gentleman gave the following story of the two competitors:
It (39)C that the son of a rich farmer and the son of a poor widow(寡妇) came in competition for the head of their class. They were so nearly equal that the teacher could
(40)A decide between them; some days one,and some days the (41)C,gained the head of the class. It was decided by seeing who should be at the head of the class for the greater number of days in the week.
The widow's son,by the last day's efforts, won the victory, and kept his place the following week, till the school (42)D for the holidays.
When they met again the widow's son did not (43)B,and the farmer's son, being next to him, might now have been at the head of his class.(44)B taking the now empty position, however,he went to the widow's house to find out what could be cause of her son's absence.
Poverty was the cause:the poor woman found that she was not able, with her total efforts,to(45)A to pay for the tuition(学费) and books of her son,and so he,poor fellow had to give up his schooling, and to return to labor for her support.
The farmer's son,out of the pocket money which his father gave him, bought all the necessary books and paid for the tuition of his competitor. He (46)C agreed he be brought back again to the head of his class, where he continued for some time, with the help of his generous competitor.
