We can get knowledge through reading. It can not only open our minds, but also make us cleverer and more confident . Our study can be improved if we read more good books.

These days I am reading a book whose title is Jane Eyre, which attracts me a lot. The book's writer is called Charlotte Bronte, who was born in England in 1816.She had two sisters and one brother, but unfortunately their mother died when they were very young. Actually Jane Eyre is a book whose theme is of love. In the story. Jane Eyre lived a hard life, but she was self-confident and perseverant. In her heart, there is always a mind that if you hold a belief and stick to it, you will eventually achieve your dream.

The champions of the Earth Awards (µØÇòÎÀÊ¿½±) is the United Nations' highest environmental honor. On Dec 5th, 2017, it ¡¾1¡¿ to China¡¯s Saihanba.

Around the 10th century, Saihanba became a ¡¾4¡¿ hunting ground. During the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), Emperor Kangxi liked Saihanba so much and he once killed 318 rabbits in a single day.

Hard work and efforts ¡¾6¡¿ a national forest in Saihanba started in the 1960s. In 1961, a group of six scientists traveled through Saihanba and studied the ¡¾7¡¿ of growing trees there.

They finally found one tree standing alone in the vast land, which ¡¾8¡¿ encouraged them. If one tree could survive there, so could millions of others.

About 56 years later, after overcoming the countless difficulties of planting trees in a very cold place, the barren land is now a vast forest. Today, Saihanba is known as a natural shield (·À»¤) ¡¾9¡¿ sandstorms. It is very important for Beijing¡¯s water and air¡¾10¡¿.

¡¾ÌâÄ¿¡¿My mother is a teacher, and I grew up with the challenges (ÌôÕ½) a teacher faces. I often asked her, ¡±Why do you teach? What keeps you teaching? "The answer was always the same. "There is always that one child, that one moment that is worth it.¡±

Now, I am a teacher, too. But different from my mother, I teach students challenging activities outdoors. And when my mother asked me the similar questions, my answer was, "it's that one child, that one special moment.¡±

One of those moments happened recently. I was working with a group of girls in a four-week programme. Everything went on well through the "Team" events and we were moving on to a "High" one called the wire£¨¸ÖË÷£© Walk£®

In the Wire Walk, each girl had to climb up the pegs(ľ׮)in a tree to a wire, 8 meters high, and then walk across it. Of course, everything was safe for sure.

When I asked who would try, a few girls raised their hands, and they finished the Wire Walk with little difficulty.

But when it was Susie¡¯s turn, it seemed that she didn¡¯t really want to. I asked Susie if she was ready. She Answered softy, ¡°I suppose.¡±

Now, Susie was at the foot of the tree. She started to make the long reach for the first peg. The other girls cheered for her. Then I found Susie was becoming nervous with every step. I realised she would not go much further.

Susie was halfway up. Then she stopped and held the tree tight(½ô½ôµØ), looking very afraid. Her eyes were closed. With her face against the tree, she cried, ¡°I can¡¯t.¡±

The other girls sat in silence. I talked quietly to Susie, trying to relax her. I talked for a long time till I ran out of words.

¡°I will still be your friend no matter what, Susie!" Mary broke the silence.

To my surprise, Susie lifted her head and looked up to the wire. Then she turned to look down at Mary and smiled. Mary smiled back.

Finally, Susie made it all the way across that wire. When she returned to the ground, the first hug she looked for was from Mary.

We all cheered.

Moments like this keep me doing what I do. The young hearts continue to fill me with courage.

¡¾ÌâÄ¿¡¿Last week, I visited my friend Pete in his new home, where he lives with his wife and daughter. Pete used to spend his holidays traveling around the world ¨C visiting the pyramids in Egypt or scuba diving (Ë®·ÎDZˮ) in the Caribbean. Nowadays, he prefers to spend his holidays and weekends making his house look more beautiful. Like hundreds of thousands of other British people, he¡¯s found the joy of DIY (do it yourself) home repairs. This means that if there¡¯s anything that needs fixing around the house, he will try to do the job himself.

Pete showed me his new kitchen, which he put together himself, and his newly-painted walls. I asked him where he got the idea to do these things. He told me that his favourite source (À´Ô´) of ideas is a DIY program on TV.

This got me thinking about how popular DIY programs are in the UK. Each main channel (ƵµÀ) has at least one home or garden makeover show. There are even channels totally on the subject.

I suppose it¡¯s not really surprising that DIY programs are so popular. There are two common sayings in Britain ¨C ¡°an Englishman¡¯s home is his castle (³Ç±¤)¡± and ¡°there¡¯s no place like home¡± ¨C which show how important our houses are to us. With the social changes of the last ten years or so, many people can¡¯t afford to buy bigger houses. So they are looking at how they can make their house better without spending a lot of money. DIY, clearly, is the perfect choice.

¡¾1¡¿Pete usually spent his holidays ______ in the past.

A. traveling round the world

B. visiting Egypt

C. diving in the Caribbean

D. building a new house

¡¾2¡¿What do most British people enjoy doing nowadays?

A. Finishing their work at home.

B. Doing everything on their own.

C. Spending their spare time at home.

D. Doing the home repairs themselves.

¡¾3¡¿How did Pete manage to make his house more beautiful?

A. He asked house builders for advice.

B. He got help from a DIY TV program.

C. He called some of his friends for help.

D. He paid workers to do the house work.

¡¾4¡¿What does the underlined word ¡°makeover¡± in Paragraph 3 probably means?

A. ÐÞ½¨

B. ½»»»

C. ÐÞÊÎ

D. »¯×±

¡¾5¡¿DIY programs have become popular because ______.

A. other programs are too boring to watch

B. people are spending more time watching TV

C. people can¡¯t afford new houses any more

D. people are spending more time fixing their houses
