【题目】In common with many countries, Britain has serious environmental problems. In 1952, more than 4,000 people died in London because of the smog. The government introduced new laws to stop smog from coal fires and factories and the situation improved a lot.

Today, London is much cleaner but there is a new problem: smog from cars. Part of the problem is the new “out of town” shopping centers. In the past, people often walked to shops near their home. Now, many people drive to the new shopping centers. So, the small shops have disappeared and more people have to travel to do their shopping.

Critics (批评家) think that Britain needs cheaper public transport. An early morning train trip from Glasgow to London (about 600km) can cost about 100, for example. A 15-minute bus trip can cost over 1.00.

Many people are trying to reduce the use of cars in Britain. Some cities now have special bicycle paths and many people cycle to work. Some people also travel to work together in one car to reduce the pollution and the cost.

In 2014, the world paused to remember a cultural giant on April 17. Nobel Prize winning writer Gabriel Garcia Marquez died on that day at the age of 87.

Garcia Marquez was born in Colombia (哥伦比亚), but lived in Mexico for more than 30 years. He is one of the 20th century’s most famous writers. He is best known for his novel, One Hundred Years of Solitude (《百年孤独》). It tells the story of a family over several generations. The story is a metaphor (暗喻) for the development of Colombia since the 19th century. The novel has sold about 50 million copies.

He wrote in a style called “magical realism (魔幻现实主义)” This style blends (融合) fantasy and reality. In such works, people live regular lives during a certain period of time in history. But meanwhile, magical things happen to them.

In Garcia Marquez’s works, a child is born with a pig’s tail, and a couple finds an old man with big wings in their courtyard. He said he was inspired by childhood stories told by his grandmother. She believed that everything was possible. She often told him stories about ghosts in their house.

But his works are quite serious. He wrote during a period when much of Latin America was suffering from a civil war. Everyday life in Colombia was filled with chaos (混乱). That’s why magical realism works well.

“That’s very interesting.” Paul said.

With these words, he turned to the other man, saying, “And what about you?”

“I’ll tell you a secret,” Allan said. “I always want to be a racing driver. So if I have only three months to live, the first thing I’d like to do is to sell my house. With the money I’ll buy the fastest car in the world. Perhaps I can enter all the big motor races.”

Then he laughed, “I might even end up world champion (冠军).”

“Now it’s your turn,” Allan went on, “If your doctor tell you the bad news, what would you most like to do?”

They knew I had a speech problem. I stuttered(口吃).

For me a simple sentence was going to take longer than it should.“ Hello, how are you doing?” can take you 3 seconds(秒), while it would take me 10 seconds. And the man just asked me if I wanted to stand in front of strangers and speak about computer technology.
