【题目】 Is sleep important for children? A new study says yes.

In America, most people don't get enough sleep. Children aged 5 to 12 are advised to sleep 10 to 11 hours every night, but most of them can't sleep that long. A study found that about 41 million American workers got less than six hours of sleep every night. Scientists worry that parents are passing their poor sleeping habits down to their children.

In the study, Reut Gruber and some other scientists either added or reduced(减少) one hour of sleep for healthy children aged 7 to 11. They watched the children for five nights. They wanted to know if the amount of sleep can affect(影响) a child's behavior.

Before the study began, students were asked to sleep the same amount of hours as usual. Their teachers were asked to record their behavior. After changing the children's sleep for five nights, the teachers had to record again. According to the two records, scientists found that those who slept one hour less behaved worse than those who slept one hour more. Students with less sleep were more likely(可能的) to feel sad and had more problems paying attention.

The scientists chose to study children in their homes instead of in a laboratory, because they wanted to find out how everyday changes might affect children's behavior at school. "In the study, nobody became a talent, and nobody became crazy. But small changes in children can really make a big difference," says Gruber.

【题目】 Many years ago, my dad was facing a serious heart condition. He fell suddenly ill and had to be sent to hospital.

When he recovered, he wanted to do something to keep himself busy, so he decided to volunteer at the local children’s hospital. My dad loved kids. It was the perfect job for him. He ended up working with the seriously sick children. He would talk, and do arts with them.

One of his kids was a girl who was seriously ill and was paralyzed from the neck down. She couldn’t move or do anything, and she was very sad. My dad decided to help her. He started visiting her in her room, bringing paints, brushed and paper. He stood the paper up, put the paintbrush in his mouth and began to paint. He didn’t use his hands at all. All the while he would tell her, “See, you can do anything you set your mind to.”

At the end of the day, she began to paint with her mouth, and she and my dad became friends. Soon after, the little girl was sent home because the doctors felt there was nothing else they could do for her. My dad also left the children’s hospital for a while because he became ill. Some time later after my dad had recovered and returned to work, he saw the little girl who had been paralyzed and only this time she was walking. She can straight over to my dad and hugged him really tight. She gave him a picture while she drew with her hands. At the bottom it read, “Thank you for helping me walk.”

【题目】阅读与表达(问答式)

There have been many great inventions, things that changed the way we live. The first great inventions was one that is still very important today—the wheel(车轮). This made it easier to carry heavy things and to travel long distances.

For hundreds of years after that there were few inventions that had as much effect as the wheel. Then in the early 1800's the world started to change. There was little unknown land left in the world. People didn't have to explore much any more. They began to work instead to make life better.

In the second half of the 19th century many great inventions were made. Among them were the camera, the light and the radio. These all became a big part of our life today.

The first part of the 20th century saw more great inventions. Movies with sound in 1926. This was also a time when a new material(材料) was first made. Nylon came out in 1935. It changed the kind of clothes people wear.

The middle part of the 20th century brought new ways to help people get over diseases. They made people healthier and let them live longer lives.

By the 1960s most people had a very good life. Of course new inventions continued to be made. Man began looking for ways to go into space. Russia made the first step. Then the United States took a step. Since then other countries, including China and Japan, have made their steps into space.

In 1969 man took his biggest step away from earth. Americans first walked on the moon. This is certainly just a beginning thought. New inventions will some day help us to do things we have never dreamed of.

1What could the first great invention help people do at that time?

2How long did it take people to invent Nylon after movies with sound were made?

3When did most people have a very good life according to the passage?

4What was the greatest thing for human beings in 1969?

5What is the main idea of the passage?
