【题目】 Many years ago, my dad was facing a serious heart condition. He fell suddenly ill and had to be sent to hospital.

When he recovered, he wanted to do something to keep himself busy, so he decided to volunteer at the local children’s hospital. My dad loved kids. It was the perfect job for him. He ended up working with the seriously sick children. He would talk, and do arts with them.

One of his kids was a girl who was seriously ill and was paralyzed from the neck down. She couldn’t move or do anything, and she was very sad. My dad decided to help her. He started visiting her in her room, bringing paints, brushed and paper. He stood the paper up, put the paintbrush in his mouth and began to paint. He didn’t use his hands at all. All the while he would tell her, “See, you can do anything you set your mind to.”

At the end of the day, she began to paint with her mouth, and she and my dad became friends. Soon after, the little girl was sent home because the doctors felt there was nothing else they could do for her. My dad also left the children’s hospital for a while because he became ill. Some time later after my dad had recovered and returned to work, he saw the little girl who had been paralyzed and only this time she was walking. She can straight over to my dad and hugged him really tight. She gave him a picture while she drew with her hands. At the bottom it read, “Thank you for helping me walk.”

My dad would cry every time he told us this story and so would us. He would say sometimes love is more powerful than a doctor, and my dad---who just died just a few months after the little girl gave the picture---loved every single child in that hospital.

【题目】 Have you ever had trouble sleeping in a new place?

Lots of people do. And now researchers from Brown University in Rhode Island think they know why. They found that one-half of the brain “remains more awake” than the other half when people are trying to sleep in a new place.

This appears a case of the brain keeping people ready for trouble in a new place, the researchers said.

The sleep findings were reported in Current Biology by Brown University. In their report, the researchers said many people report they have a harder time sleeping the first night at a hotel or other places outside their home. They call it “first-night influence”. “In Japan they say, ‘If you change your pillow, you can’t sleep,’” said Yuka Sasaki, one of the report’s writers, “You don’t sleep very well in a new place. We all know about it.”

The researchers measured brain waves(测量脑波) for 35 volunteers over two nights in a laboratory. The two nights were a week apart. They found during the first night the left half of the brain was more active than the right half. This was during the first deep-sleep period, the researchers said.

Sasaki said a lot of questions remain.

Researchers did not keep measuring brain waves all night long. So, they don’t know if the left half keeps “watch” all night. Or whether it “works in shifts” with the right half later in the night. They also don’t know why the brain activity, at least during the first period of deep sleep, is always on the left half.

For some, this research may be calming. It is good to know that our brain is “looking out for us” in a new place. But it may not help with sleep. That brain activity, at least according to this new research, makes it harder to get the sleep people need to wake up well rested in the morning.

1What did the research find during the first deep-sleep period?

A.They found the brain wave remained the same.

B.They found the brain activity helped with sleep.

C.They found the right half of the brain kept “watch”.

D.They found the left half of the brain was more active.

2Which of the following is one of the questions that remain?

A.Whether the new bed keeps you from sleeping.

B.How you have trouble sleeping in a new place.

C.Why the brain activity is always on the left half.

D.What people can do when they can’t sleep well.

3The underlined word “calming” has the closest meaning to ______.

A.pleasingB.differentC.seriousD.strange

4What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 7 refer to?

A.The brain wave.

B.The brain activity.

C.The whole brain.

D.The left half of the brain.

【题目】 Is sleep important for children? A new study says yes.

In America, most people don't get enough sleep. Children aged 5 to 12 are advised to sleep 10 to 11 hours every night, but most of them can't sleep that long. A study found that about 41 million American workers got less than six hours of sleep every night. Scientists worry that parents are passing their poor sleeping habits down to their children.

In the study, Reut Gruber and some other scientists either added or reduced(减少) one hour of sleep for healthy children aged 7 to 11. They watched the children for five nights. They wanted to know if the amount of sleep can affect(影响) a child's behavior.

Before the study began, students were asked to sleep the same amount of hours as usual. Their teachers were asked to record their behavior. After changing the children's sleep for five nights, the teachers had to record again. According to the two records, scientists found that those who slept one hour less behaved worse than those who slept one hour more. Students with less sleep were more likely(可能的) to feel sad and had more problems paying attention.

The scientists chose to study children in their homes instead of in a laboratory, because they wanted to find out how everyday changes might affect children's behavior at school. "In the study, nobody became a talent, and nobody became crazy. But small changes in children can really make a big difference," says Gruber.

【题目】 On a very hot day, it is hard to know what to do to feel good. If you run around, you may feel sick in your stomach. However, if you just sit quietly and do nothing, you may feel bored. Are there things you can do to feel good and have fun when you're hot?

Perhaps playing in water is a good choice to make you cool down. Taking a cool bath or shower, or even washing toys in a pan of cool water can also make you feel good on a hot day. Besides, you can read stories or paint in front of a fan. You don't need to move your body very much. These are just some of the cool things to do on a hot day.

In addition, it's important for you to drink water. On hot days, you can lose about 16 glasses of water in one day. If you feel thirsty, you are already short of water. So don't wait for thirst before you start to drink. You should try to drink as much water as you lose every day. Mixing a little fruit juice into your water is a fun way to help you drink plenty of water.

The food you eat also makes a difference in how you feel in the heat. Cold foods such as ice cream and drinks with some ice can cool down your bodies. Fruits and vegetables are also helpful to stay cool in hot weather. So plan a healthy menu for a hot day---one that doesn't need any cooking.
