11."A wise old owl sat on an oak.The more he saw,the less he spoke, the more he heard. Why aren't we like that wise old bird?---Edward H.Richards
We all need to learn to listen well.Listening is a learned skill, the same as speaking in public. It just takes much longer to learn!Listening is a skill we should be practicing every day.And I mean active listening, not just listening when it is convenient to us.
Listening shows others that they are important. It's a sign of respect(尊重).If someone listen to you carefully when you are talking,it shows that they are really interested in what you are saying.
How do you practice listening? Here are some basic rules:
Put down whatever is in your hands. Are you in the middle of writing something?Put down the pen and fold you hands. Are you reading something?Close it so that it will be impossible for you to look down and start reading again. Then put it down.
Turn off your computer. The computer will distract you from your job at hand-listening.
Face the person you are speaking with.Facing the person you are speaking with will help you focus completely on listening. It will also make the person feel that you find what he is saying important.
Mind your body language.Learning into the speaker will show interest.Crossing your arms in front of your chest shows disagreements.Looking around the room shows you have no interest.Tapping your fingers tells the speaker that you are really too busy for him.Looking at that speaker in the eye tells him that he is important.
Lstening completely.Do not start making comments after the first few words.Do not start thingking about your reply in your mind.Pay attention to the speaker.Really listen to what he is telling you.

Everyone has his own set of microbes on the hands.That is to say,if you and your best friend were able to see and compare all the microbes on your hands,your hands probably would look different.Some microbes only show up on your hands while others live only on your friend's hands.
When you work on a computer you leave the microbes from your hands on the keyboard.The scientists can easily tell the owner of the keyboard by looking at the microbes on it.Even if you don't leave your fingerprints behind,your microbes may give you away.
Noah Fierer,a scientist,says."You can only clean a fingerprint,but you can't sterilize (使无菌) a surface just by wiping(擦) it off,"He says that scientists have a lot more work to do before the microbe is used as a useful tool."

20.Think stars don't move?Think again!When you look into the sky at night,the stars may appear to stay in the same place.But stars are always on the move-they're just so far away that the motion is hard to see.
But some stars move in ways that appear too strange to be real.In 2005,astronomer Warren Brown found one of these space oddities(奇特,怪事).It was-located on the outer edge of the Milky Way,the galaxy we live in.The star was speeding away like nothing he'd ever seen.
"It seemed absurd (荒谬的,荒诞的).No star in the galaxy has a speed like that,"Brown remembers."I thought,oh my goodness,I have something kind of special here."
No one had ever seen a star like this one. What does a scientist do when the results don't make sense?
Brown didn't give up.Instead,he kept looking.And he kept finding more of these strange and speedy stars,called hypervelovity stars.Hyper means"above"and velocity has to do with speed.He and his team just found six more of these"above speed"stars,bringing the total to 16.And,he says,he's found even more,and is just waiting for the scientific community to confirm them.
