【题目】 From the time I was a child growing up in New Jersey, I loved spending weekends with my grandparents. I felt _________ in Granny’s small kitchen. We always had peaceful conversations, and Granny always seemed to include some wisdom with every dish she prepared.

I remember one Saturday morning. I was about 11 years old. After breakfast I asked Granny, “What kind of ___________ are you making today?” “Vegetable beef,” she answered. “And you can help by cutting some carrots.” I slowly cut the carrots, I said, “I’ve got to give a report next week and I’m scared (害怕的). I don’t like standing in front of everybody. What if I forget what I’m going to say? Or what if somebody laughs?” “And what if you do just fine?” Granny asked. “Have you __________ notes?” “Well, no. That would be a lot of work.” “Hard work never hurts anyone,” Granny said. “You could try practicing in front of a _________. It’s easy to find how well you are practicing.”

I pushed the pieces of carrots to the side of the cutting board and went on to complain about schoolwork, friends and family. Granny took it all in, listening ________ while I talked about so many pieces of grief (伤心事) in my life.

“Tracy,” she said, “there’s nothing wrong with a little trouble in your life. Well, you know, a lot of people don’t make homemade soup these days. They say it’s too much trouble. But I don’t mind such a little __________. It adds flavor (滋味) to my soup — and to my life. My soup would be pretty bland (平淡)__________ the vegetables, and so would my life if it didn’t have the little ups and downs.” She smiled and then started washing the dishes.

【题目】 A black bear was in a dangerous situation when she fell off a 30-meter-high bridge. After a long day in California’s Sierra Nevada mountains, the bear probably thought she was taking a shortcut home. She was walking across the bridge when, suddenly, two cars entered from both sides. There was nowhere to run, so the bear jumped onto the rail and began to fall over the side.

Luckily, the bear pulled herself onto an arch(拱)under the bridge, but she was trapped there. A driver saw the unbelievable scene and called 911. Robert Brooks, an animal control officer from the nearby town, was sent to investigate(调查).When he found it wasn’t a joke, he soon called Dave Baker of the BEAR League-a group that helps bears in trouble.

Unfortunately. The sky was getting dark, so the rescuers had to wait. Early next morning, the two men returned to the bridge with more volunteers. Amazingly, the bear was still there. Dave had an idea—they should hang a net under the bear, push her into it, and then lower her to the ground.

Police officers closed the road,. After the net was in position, Robert immediately shot a dart(飞镖)with a sleeping drug into the bear’s shoulder. When the bear was sleepy, Ann Bryant, the head of the BEAR League, yelled, “OK, push!” A volunteer rock climber used his feet to push the bear off the arch, right into the middle of the net!

Firefighters volunteered to lower the 100-kilogram bear. When she touched to ground, everyone cheered. Ann and Robert guided the sleepy bear to a river, where she could finally get a drink. “She just kind of lay down on her tummy and out her paws under her chin,”said Ann, “like a dog lying on the living room floor...only big!”The rescuers then cleared all the people there and left the bear alone.
