Do you wonder why your classmates always get higher marks than you? If you think it is because they are cleverer than you, you are really wrong, according to American authors Wood Smethurst and william Luckie. In their book, Study Power, they say that successful students are not cleverer than others and that they just know the best ways to study for exams.

“The best way to study is to study actively, say the authors. You must ask yourself questions as you work. Asking yourself questions will help you remember information better and faster. To study better you also need to make the best use of your time: When you study, the authors say, only go on for 20 minutes at a time. If you study for longer you will start thinking about other things and not learn anything. The authors also tell students to listen to everything their teachers say in class and write it down.

The authors say that everyone can get high marks if they learn actively and follow their tips.

British newspapers are much smaller than they used to be and their readers are often in a hurry. So newspapermen write as few words as possible. They tell their readers what happened, where, when and how it happened and what was the result: what damage was done, which famous man married which woman, who did very well in the match and so on. Readers want the fact and they are also interested in the people who have seen the accident. So a newspaperman always likes to get some information from someone who was there, which can be given in the person’s own words. Because he can use only a few words, the newspaperman must choose those words carefully, every one must be effective. Instead of “he called out in a loud voice”, he writes “he shouted”; instead of “the loose stones rolled noisily down the side of the mountain”, he will write “they thundered down the mountainside”.

The next day, I couldn't focus(集中) in school. I didn’t do my homework. My teacher asked me what had happened, and I told her. She told me that I had to do whatever I could to help out, including helping do housework. On my way home, I got an idea.

I started making bracelets (手链)to sell in the street. I made them every day whenever I had time. My classmates also helped me make and sell them. Finally I raised about$850 for my mom’s treatment(治疗).

About a year later, my mom ended up beating cancer, and she has been cancer-free for about two years now. That was really a hard time, but we succeeded at last.
