【题目】 An old cowboy was riding his trusty horse followed by his honesty dog along an uncommon road. The man was enjoying the new scenery(风景), when he suddenly remembered dying. He realized that the dog beside him had been dead for years and so had his horse. He wondered what was happening, and where the road was leading them.

After a while, they saw a tall arch topped by golden letter "H" and a gate in the arch that looked like mother-of-pearl. The street that led to the gate looked like gold.

He rode toward the gate and saw a man at a desk. Thirsty and tired out by his journey, he called out," Excuse me, where are we?"

"This is Heaven, sir," the man answered.

"Wow! Would you happen to have some water?" the cowboy asked.

"Of course, sir. Come right in, and I'll have some ice water for you."

"Can I bring my partners, too?"

"I'm sorry, sir, but we don't accept pets."

The cowboy thought for a moment, then turned back to the road and continued riding, his dog running by his side.

After another long ride, he came to a dirt road leading through a gate that looked as if it had never been closed. As he went closer to the gate, he saw a man inside, leaning against a tree and reading a book. “Excuse me,” he called to the man. "Do you have any water?"

"Sure, there's a pump right over there. Help yourself."

"How about my friends here?" the cowboy pointed at the dog and his horse.

"Of course! They look thirsty, too," said the man.

The three went through the gate and sure enough, there was an old-fashioned hand pump with buckets(水桶)beside it. The cowboy took a long drink, as did his horse and dog. "What do you call this place?" the cowboy asked the man who was still standing by the tree.

"This is Heaven," he answered.

"That's strange," the cowboy said. "The man down the road said that was Heaven, too."

"Oh, you mean the place with the shinning, gold street and fake pearly gates? That's Hell." "Doesn't it make you angry when they use your name like that?"

"Not at all. Actually, we’re happy they screen out the folks who would leave their best friends behind."

本文通过讲述了一个由于没有抛弃朋友才最终进入天堂的牛仔的故事,告诉我们永远不要抛弃自己的朋友,善因终会得善果。

1细节理解题。根据文中he suddenly remembered dying. He realized that the dog beside him had been dead for years and so had his horse可知,他意识到他以及随行的狗和马都已经死了。所以ACD都是他知道的,而B目的地通过下文两次问这是哪儿,可知他不知道目的地是哪里。故选B

2推理判断题。根据文中Can I bring my partners, tooI’m sorry, sir, but we don’t accept pet可知,牛仔遇到的第一个人不允许他带着狗和马一起喝水,所以他继续前行是不想抛弃随行的同伴。故选B

3词义猜测题。根据文中句子there was an old-fashioned hand pump with buckets(水桶)beside it中的an old-fashioned hand(一个老式的手动的),以及下文的“Help yourself.”请自便,可以推测出,让牛仔自己用水泵打水来喝,pump应该是水泵。故选C
