Snoopy and Lou were robbers. Half a year ago, they decided to plan another bank robbery. It was to be their last one. Then they would give up this business and live a comfortable life. The job was so well done that the judge who sent them to prison for fifteen years each said it was the cleverest robbery of the century, and it was a pity that their car had used up its petrol not far from the bank.

After they were in prison for a few weeks, Snoopy and Lou decided to escape. Soon they worked out a plan as good as any they had ever made. Even the smallest points were considered carefully. They planned as a team because they lived in the same room, and because the guards, who had a great deal of respect for the famous robbers, left them very much alone. They decided the quickest and safest way to escape was to squeeze themselves along a drain(下水道) from their present workplace in the prison to a quiet country road on the other side of the prison wall.

The great day arrived, and the pair started along the drain. With great difficulty, they squeezed themselves along for what seemed ages. In half an hour, they could see daylight. When they got out, the two men were so pleased with themselves at their success that they sloped each other on the back. It was only then that they realized they were not alone. They looked around, and found themselves facing thirty astonished policemen, who were carrying musical instruments of various sorts. The next morning the same judge seemed very sorry as he told Snoopy and Lou that the map of the prison drain system, which they had studied so carefully, was more than twenty years old, and that the quiet country road was no longer there. The drain now led directly to the parade ground, where the police band had just finished practicing when the two robbers appeared before them.

There are several things about motorcycling that the average citizen dislikes. A cyclist’s appearance has something to do with his dislike. Motorcyclists frequently look dirty. In fact, they are dirty. On the road there is little to protect them from mud, bird droppings, etc. for practical reasons they often dress in old clothing which looks much less respectable than the clothing of people who ride in cars. For the same reason motorcyclists usually wear dark colors. Perhaps this helps to explain why they are sometimes believed to have very bad natures. In old plays of long ago, bad characters usually wore black. In cowboy movies the “ bad guys” usually wear black hats while the “good guys” wear light colors.

Something else about heir appearance means an unpleasant impression. In their protective clothing they look very much like the men on military(军事的)motorcycles in the movies of World War II --- cruel enemies who roared(咆哮) into peaceful villages filling people’s hearts with fear.

Probably the machine itself also produces anger and fear. Motorcycles are noisy, though some big trucks are even noisier. But trucks are big and carry heavy loads; they are accepted because they perform a needed service.

Motorcycles, on the other hand, make an unpleasant noise just to their riders’ pleasure. That is what is commonly thought. In the woods motorcycles frighten animals. Roaring along quiet streets, they wake sleeping families and babies cry.

68. The main idea of this passage is ________.

A. why the average people dislike motorcycling

B. why motorcyclists dress in dark clothes

C. why the average people sometimes think motorcyclists have bad natures

D. why big trucks, though they are even noisier than motorcycles, are accepted

70. Which of the following does not explain why a motorcyclist’s appearance gives people an unpleasant impression?

A. Bad characters in old plays wore black.

B. At night motorcyclists wake sleeping families.

C. The “bad guys” in cowboy movies wear black hats.

D. The men on military motorcycles in the movies of World War II wear similar protective clothing as motorcyclists do.

71. Though they are even noisier than motorcycles, big trucks are usually accepted because ________.

A. they carry heavy loads and give their drivers pleasure as well

B. they don’t run along quiet streets

C. they are bigger, so it is natural for them to make louder noises

D. they play an important part in transport

There are three separate sources of danger in supplying energy by nuclear power.

First, the radioactive material must travel from its place of production to the power station. Although the power stations themselves are strongly built, the containers used for the transport of the materials are not. Normally, only two methods of transport are in use, namely road or rail. Unfortunately, both of these may have an effect on the general public, since they are sure to pass near, or even through, heavily populated areas.

Second, there is a problem of waste. All nuclear power stations produce wastes that in most cases will remain radioactive for thousands of years. It is impossible to make these wastes non-radioactive, and so they must be stored in one of the inconvenient ways that scientists have invented. For example, they may be buried under the ground, or dropped into deserted mines, or sunk in the sea. However, these methods do not solve the problem, since an earthquake could easily break the containers.

Third, there may occur the danger of a leak or an explosion at the power station. As with the other two dangers, this is not very likely, so it does not provide a serious objection to the nuclear power program. However, it can happen.

Separately, these three types of dangers are not a great cause for worry. Taken together, though, the probability of disaster is extremely high.

64. Which of the flowing is FALSE?

A. It is possible that a leak or an explosion occurs at a power station.

B. It is unusual for radioactive materials to be transported across land.

C. The containers are likely to be broken by an earthquake.

D. Nuclear wastes remain dangerous in most cases for many years.

65. The author thinks that the ways to store nuclear wastes are _________.

A. easy B. impossible C. reasonable D. ineffective

66. What do we learn from the last paragraph?

A. The power station is a safe place.

B. The dangers of nuclear energy can be prevented.

C. The general public are strongly against the nuclear program.

D. By itself, none of the three dangers is very likely to cause much worry.

67. What is the passage about?

A. Uses of nuclear power.

B. Dangers from nuclear power.

C. Public anger at nuclear power.

D. Accidents caused by nuclear power.

Should doctors ever lie to speed recovery? What should doctors say, for example, to a 46-year-old man coming for a physical examination just before going on vacation with his family who, thought he feels in good health, is found to have a form of cancer that will cause him to die within six months? If he asks, should the doctor say he isn’t ill or say he is only slightly ill without a danger of death?

Most doctors believe that the seriously ill do not want to know the truth about their conditions and that they lie for the patients’ own good. They follow the belief: “We do no harm to the patients as far as possible by telling lies.”

However, studies show most patients do want to be told truth, though very seriously ill. We are also learning that the truthful information helps patients fight against illness, even recover faster. If they get the untruthful information about their condition, they may even make a wrong decision that they don’t need treatment at all.

The patients and their relatives are more and more unsatisfied with the doctors’ lies. And the increasing doubts and the questions to doctors have appeared. Neither in medicine, nor in law, government or the social science can there be comfort in the old saying, “What you don’t know can’t hurt you.”

56. In the writer’s opinion, for doctors it’s right to ________.

A. let out to everyone the truth about the patients

B. tell the sick the truth to help them recover quickly

C. comfort the patients by telling lies

D. tell lies only for the patients’ own good

57. Most doctors believe that ________.

A. they lie for no reason

B. everyone doesn’t want to know the truth

C. their lies do good to the patients

D. the seriously ill needn’t to be told the truth

58. From the last paragraph, we know ________.

A. we should “Call a spade a spade”

B. “What you don’t know can’t hurt you”

C. “Practice makes perfect”

D. “Where there is a will, there is a way”

59. Facing a dying patient over 80, if you are a doctor, after examining him, what should you say to him?

A. “You are slightly ill. Take it easy.”

B. “You are dying. Go back home.”

C. “No problem at all. Have a rest.”

D. You are seriously ill. We will try our best.”
