6．The question of what children learn，and how they should learn，is continually being debated and redebated．Nobody dares any longer to defend the old system，the learning of lessons parrot-fashion，the grammar-with-a-whip system，which was good enough for our grandparents．The theories of modern psychology have stepped in to argue that we must understand the need of children．Children are not just small adults； they are children who must be respected as much．
Well，you may say，this is as it should be，a good idea．But think further．What happens？"Education"becomes the responsibility not of teachers，but of psychologists．What happens then？Teachers worry too much about the psychological implications of their lessons，and forget about the subjects themselves．If a child dislikes a lesson，the teacher feels that it is his fault，not the child's．So teachers worry whether history is"relevant"to modern young children．And do theydare to recount stories about violence？Or will this make the children themselves violent？Can they tell their classes about children of different races，or will this encourage racial hatred？Why teach children to write grammatical sentences？Spoken expression is better．Sums？Arithmetic？No：Real-life mathematical situations are more understandable．
You see，you can go too far．Influenced by educational theorists，who have nothing better to do than to write books about their ideas，teachers leave their teacher-training colleges filled with grand，psychological ideas about children and their needs．They make elaborate，sophisticated （精致的，复杂的） preparations and try out their"modern methods"on the long-suffering children．Since one"modem method"rapidly replaces another the poor kids will have well been fed up by the time they leave school．Frequently the modem methods are so sophisticated that they fail to be understood by the teachers，let alone the children； even more often，the relaxed discipline so essential for the"informal"feelings the class must have，prevents all but a handful of children from learning anything．

Picnic
Picnics are great fun and very relaxing．Go to the park，the lake or hike into the woods，etc．One of our favorite things to do is packing some goodies，getting in the car and seeing what new things and new places we could find to explore．When we got hungry we would stop and have a picnic！Great way to spend a family day．
Fishing
Kids love fishing！Pack a lunch，drive down to the ake or river and have a day of fishing．Make a contest of it just to add to the fun．Whoever wins gets to pick out the family movie and whoever loses has to make all the popcorn（爆米花）-simple interests to add to the sport of it．
Nature walks
Get your backpacks and get on the trails．Teach your children about nature and the importance of treating it with respect．Watch for wildlife，birds and interesting flowers，trees and other wonders of nature．

Front Country Trips
Our front country trips provide opportunities for people to experience projects near the ocean，in the scenic Cascade Mountains and in northeast Washington．Our trips also provide you with experienced leaders，a great project，some camping tents，sleeping bags and all your meals for the week．
Advanced Back Country Trips
On these trips you will be backpacking to the work site and will have a chance to advance your trail and leadership skills under the supervision（监护）of a WTA leader．
Trip Details
In 2015，trip fees for WTA members will be﹩195 for the first trip and﹩145 for each additional trip．Non-member will pay an additional﹩40 for their first trip and can be qualified to be members in the second trip．Due to the popularity of our trips，please submit（提交）your payment and application within two weeks．If a trip is full and you would like to be added to the waiting list，please call us at 206/625-1367 or email trail-teams@wta．org．
Scholarships
We believe no student should have to stay at home this summer because he or she can't afford to go outside．Thanks to donations from members and supporters，WTA is proud to announce that we are able to offer a limited number of scholarships．Application Deadline：May 1，2016．
