2.Would you ever hug a stranger? There's actually a social activity of offering hugs to strangers in public places. It's known as the Free Hugs Campaign. The hugs are meant to be random(随机的) acts of kindness-selfless acts performed just to make others feel better. The person offering the hugs often makes a sign that reads"FREE HUGS",then holds it up in the street and waits for someone to ask for a hug.

The activity was started by Australian Juan Mann in 2004.Juan had been living in London for almost 10 years when he decided to return to Sydney after his girlfriend decided to leave him.On landing,he had nothing but his suitc ase. After about three months,an old friend invited him to a party. In an interview with WHO magazine,Juan said that while he was at the party,"…a completely random person I didn't know came up to me and gave me a hug.I felt like a king!It was the greatest thing that ever happened."Then,he had an idea.
On 30th June 2004,Juan made a sign with the words FREE HUGS and offered his first hugs in the center of the main shopping district in Sydney."For the first 15 minutes, people just stared right through me.But then a woman tapped me on the shoulder and told me she needed a hug as one of her relatives had passed away,"said Juan.
Things really took off after a FREE HUGS video was uploaded to YouTube. While in Sydney,Juan met an American musician,Shimon Moore, who filmed Juan giving away free hugs and later used what he had shot to make a music video for the song All the Same by his band The Sick Puppies. The video was later uploaded to YouTube, where it has been viewed over 70 million times.
As a result of the video, the Free Hugs activity became international and then developed to China,Italy,America,Switzerland,Norway,India,Portugal and the UK.An International Free Hugs Day was set on the first Saturday following 30th June as this was the date of the first time that Juan ever offered free hugs in Sydney.

54.How did Shimon Moore help Juan's activity become well-known?By filming Juan's activity to make a music video and uploading it to YouTube.
6.Having worked as captain of the lifeboat at Portland Bay in the north of England for over thirty years now,I feel quite proud of my career.In my time,I've rescued fishermen with broken-down boats,swimmers (61)swept(sweep) out to sea and once even a pilot whose helicopter had developed engine (62)failure(fail).
I've always been mad about the sea,and about the lifeboat.Both my father and grandfather were volunteers on the lifeboat.(63)However/Nevertheless,I'm the first one in the family to be captain.This means that different from my father and grandfather,I work full-time at the lifeboat station.(64)The rest of the crew are volunteers (65)working (work) in other jobs locally.When the alarm goes,to signal a call-out,the crew members must drop whatever they (66)are doing (do) and report for duty  (67)immediately(immediate)---we can be out on the water within a few minutes of the alarm sounding.
The coastline here can be one of the (68)worst (bad) places in England.When the wind is in the east,the waves can be huge and there are a lot of rocks just beneath the surface of the water,(69)which makes it a dangerous place for shipping.But the sea feels (70)like a home for me---it's where I belong,in spite of its dangers.
7.Why do Americans struggle with watching their weight,while the French,who consume rich food,continue to stay thin?Now a research by Cornell University suggests how life style and decisions about eating may affect weight.Researchers conclude that the French tend (易于) to stop eating when they feel full.However,Americans tend to stop when their plate is empty or their favorite TV show is over.
According to Dr.Joseph Mercola,a health expert,the French see eating as an important part of their life style.They enjoy food and therefore spend a fairly long time at the table,while Americans see eating as something to be squeezed (挤出) between the other daily activities.Mercola believes Americans lose the ability to sense when they are actually full.So they keep eating long after the French would have stopped.In addition,he points out that Americans drive to huge supermarkets to buy canned and frozen foods for the week.The French,instead,tend to shop daily,walking to small shops and farmers'markets where they have a choice of fresh fruits,vegetables,and eggs as well as high-quality meats for each meal.
After a visit to the United States,Mireille Guiliano,author of French Women Don't Get Fat,decided to write about the importance of knowing when to stop rather than suggesting how to avoid food.Today she continues to stay slim and rarely goes to the gym.
In spite of all these differences,evidence shows that recent life style changes may be affecting French eating habits.Today the rate of obesity-or extreme overweight-among adults is only 6%.However,as American fast food gains acceptance and the young reject (拒绝) older traditions,the obesity rate among French children has reached 17%-and is growing.

14.Hybrid cars (混合动力车) are cars that run on petrol and electricity.They have a small standard petrol engine and a battery (电池) electric motor to provide electric power.
There are some differences between different models of hybrid cars,but the general principle is that the car runs on petrol,and the electric motor kicks in when additional power is required,for example,when going uphill or accelerating.In some hybrid cars the petrol engine turns itself off when not needed,for example when the car has stopped at traffic light,keeping only the electric engine running.
Conventional cars have large engines to deal with driving uphill and accelerating.Hybrid cars have much smaller petrol engines,improved by electric motors when needed,so they use less petrol.Another way that fuel consumption is cut is by a system of"regenerative (再生的) braking".The electric motor is used to slow down the car,rather than conventional brakes.The energy produced by slowing the car is changed into electrical power,which is automatically stored in the battery.In effect,the battery recharges when you brake.In conventional cars the energy produced when braking is wasted.
In 1928Ferdinand Porsche built an experimental hybrid car.The first mass-produced hybrid car,the Toyota Prius,came out in Japan at the end of 1997.However,hybrid cars became available in the USA only in 1999.As they use less fuel,hybrid cars are cheaper to run.There are also many voices in place to encourage people to buy them.In some countries,hybrid car owners pay a lower rate of tax,and don't have to pay on certain roads.In some cities,hybrid cars are allowed to park for free.

11.Selfies (自拍) have become an increasingly common way to capture memorable moments.When it comes to taking selfies,knowing the following tips can directly affect the quality of your final product.
The use of light is vital to improving image quality.Lights can help avoid shadows and create soft features on your face,so turn your face toward the main light source.If you want to be creative,play with light angles by turning your body,but make sure the photo is properly exposed and your face is lit from the front or the side.Besides,avoid taking selfies against the main light source or with overhead lighting.In addition,natural light possesses a warmth that makes you look like you're glowing.(发光)
When taking selfies,angles also matter a lot.Hold the camera away from your face,and try to take photos both horizontally(水平地) and vertically(垂直地).If not,your face might look bigger than usual.Ideally,the universal selfie angle is 45degrees above your head.But you should study your face at different angles because finding your best angle requires you having seen all of them.
One problem with selfies is that most have distracting backgrounds.You can always do more to show others your best side.Try to simplify the background by taking selfies outdoors or in spacious areas.Document yourself engaging in interesting activities---hiking with family members,visiting landmarks,or working out with friends.At least,you can make the photo appealing by getting rid of your outstretched arm or a background that's too busy.
You can also download some photo apps that allow you to adjust the lighting and contrast.Some apps offer useful filters,which can change your skin tone and remove pimples (粉刺) on your face.

12.The energy crisis (危机) has made people aware of how the careless use of the earth's energy has brought the whole world to the edge of disaster. The over-development of motor transport, with its increase of more cars, more traveling, has contributed to the near-destruction of our cities and the pollution not only of local air but also of the earth's atmosphere.
Our present situation is unlike natural disasters of the past.Worldwide energy use has brought us to a state where long-range planning is vital. What we need is not a continuation of our present serious state, which endangers the future of our country, our children, and our earth, but a movement forward in order to work rapidly and effectively on planetary problems.
This country has been falling back under the continuing exposures of loss of morality and the revelation (揭露) that lawbreaking has reached into the highest place in the land. There is a strong demand for morality to turn for the better and for some devotion that is vast enough and yet personal enough to enlist the devotion of all.In the past it has been only in a way in defense of their own country and their own benefits that people have been able to devote themselves wholeheartedly.
This is the first time that we have been asked to defend ourselves and what we hold dear in cooperation with all the other people of this planet, who share with us the same endangered air and the same endangered oceans. There is a common need to reassess our present course,to change that course and to employ new methods through which the world can survive. This is a priceless opportunity.
To grasp it,we need a widespread understanding of nature if the crisis we and the world are facing is no passing inconvenience,no byproduct of the ambitions of the oil-producing countries,no environmentalists'only fears,no byproduct of any present system of government. What we face is the result of the invention of the last four hundred years. What we need is transformed life style. This new life style can flow directly from science and technology, but its acceptance depends on a sincere devotion to finding a higher quality of life for the world's children and future generation.
