The first cause is pollution on land. The pollutants run with rainwater into rivers and streams, which carry the poisons into the ocean.(37)ESo they will be easily infected(感染) with diseases.
(38)AHigher ocean temperatures kill the important food source(来源) for the coral-the algae, the tiny greenish-gold water plants that live on coral.(39)GThis process has happened more and more frequently in recent years.
The last factor contributing to the disappearance of coral reefs is people.People sometimes crash into reefs with their boats, breaking off large blocks of coral.(40)CMoreover,some people even break coral off to collect for souvenirs since it is so colorful and pretty.

12.Our world is a noisy place, but quiet places remain.Eight years ago, audio (声音的) engineer Gordon Hempton identified the quietest place in the continental United States. He calls the place"One Square Inch of Silence."He has used his symbolic spot in a northwestern rain forest to campaign against noise pollution. But the self-described"Sound Tracker"is now going deaf.
For Gordon Hempton,it started with an experience known to many people."I was lying in the bed in the springtime about a year ago.The sun was shining. The birds could be singing. They should be singing. But I was hearing none.I knew my life was going to be different."
Hempton's eyes get watery as he describes his cruel situation.More than 20 years ago he trademarked his nickname as"The Sound Tracker."Sharp hearing defined his career as an Emmy award winning sound recordist. It also led to his activism against noise pollution. He has circled the globe three times in search of the perfect sounds of nature.
Hempton says his hearing loss is quickly getting worse but he has to finish his project.
"I am running a race to finish the Quiet Planet collection."That's the title of a planned 19-volume set of nature recordings. The sound tracks could be licensed for use in movies, video games, exhibits, plays and the like.Volunteer assistants now help Hempton review and edit sound files and identify imperfections.
The exact cause of his hearing loss is not clear.Doctors say it may be the result of an infection,or a tumor (肿瘤) or a combination of things.Hempton is self-employed.His health care plan does not pay for hearing loss treatment. So,for now,he's directing his attention to completing his"greatest hits"album."After I get it finished,I have an economic cash flow to get my hearing back. That's the first thing on my to-do list."He's hopeful his hearing loss can be recovered.

9.A Teacher's Lesson
When Mrs.Thompson stood in front of her 5th grade class on the very first day of school,she told the children a lie.Like most teachers,she looked at her students and said that she loved them all the same.
But that was impossible,because there in the front row was a little boy named Teddy Stoddard.Mrs.Thompson had watched Teddy the year before and noticed that he didn't play well with the other children,that his clothes were messy and that he constantly needed a bath.And Teddy could be unpleasant.It got to the point where Mrs.Thompson would actually take delight in marking his papers with a broad red pen,making bold X's and then putting a big"F"at the top of his papers.
One day Mrs.Thompson was reviewing each child's past records and she put Teddy's off until last.However,when she reviewed his file,she was in for a surprise.
Teddy's first grade teacher wrote,"Teddy is a bright child with a ready laugh…he is a joy to be around."
His second grade teacher wrote,"Teddy is an excellent student, well liked by his classmates, but he is troubled because his mother has a serious illness and life at home must be a struggle."
His third grade teacher wrote,"His mother's death has been hard on him.He tries to do his best but his father doesn't show much interest and his home life will soon affect him if some steps aren't taken."
Teddy's fourth grade teacher wrote,"Teddy is withdrawn and doesn't show much interest in school."
By now,Mrs.Thompson realized the problem and she was ashamed of herself.She felt even worse when her students brought her Christmas presents,wrapped in beautiful ribbons and bright paper,except for Teddy's.His present was clumsily wrapped in the heavy,brown paper that he got from a grocery bag.
Mrs.Thompson took pains to open it in the middle of the other presents.Some of the children started to laugh when she found a rhinestone(人造钻石) necklace with some of the stones missing.But she stopped the children's laughter when she said aloud how pretty the necklace was and put it on.
Teddy Stoddard stayed after school that day just long enough to say,"Mrs.Thompson,today you looked just like my Mom used to."After the children left she cried.From that very day,Mrs.Thompson paid particular attention to Teddy.As she worked with him,his mind seemed to come alive.The more she encouraged him,the faster he responded.By the end of the year,Teddy had become one of the smartest children in the class and,despite her lie that she would love all the children the same,Teddy became one her"teacher's pets."

6.There was a time when we thought humans were special in so many ways.Now we know better.We are not the only species that feels emotions,or follows a moral code.Neither are we the only ones with personalities,cultures and the ability to design and use tools.Yet we all agree that one thing,at least,makes us unique:we alone have the ability of language.
It turns out that we are not so special in this aspect either.Key to the revolutionary reassessment of our talent for communication is the way we think about language itself.Where once it was seen as an unusual object,today scientists find it is more productive to think of language as a group of abilities.Viewed this way,it becomes apparent that the component parts of language are not as unique as the whole.
Take gesture,arguably the starting point for language.Until recently,it was considered uniquely human-but not any more.Mike Tomasello of the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig,Germany,and others have collected a list of gestures observed in monkeys and some other animals,which reveals that gestures play a large role in their communication.Ape (猿) gestures can involve touch,vocalising or eye movement,and individuals wait until they have another ape's attention before making visual or auditory gestures.If their gestures go unacknowledged,they will often repeat them.
In an experiment carried out in 2006by Erica Cartmill and Richard Byrne from the University of St Andrews in the UK,they got a person to sit on a chair with some highly desirable food such as banana to one side of apes and some undesirable food such as vegetables to the other.The apes,who could see the person and the food from their enclosures,gestured at their human partners to encourage them to push the desirable food their way.If the person showed incomprehension and offered the vegetables,the animals would change their gestures-just as humans would in a similar situation.If the human seemed to understand while being somewhat confused,giving only half the preferred food,the apes would repeat and exaggerate their gestures-again in exactly the same way a human would.Such findings highlight the fact that the gestures of the animals are not merely inborn but are learned,flexible and under voluntary control-all characteristics that are considered preconditions for human-like communication.

C.can be divided into different components
D.are productive for some talented animals
