【题目】It’s in Your Hands

Feeding bread to the ducks is a fond pastime for many of us, reminding us of happy childhood trips to the local park. 1 Eating it can cause our feathered friends to develop a condition called Angel Wing, which is when too much bread makes birds’ feathers grow too quickly. This additional weight puts a strain on their muscles, causing their wings to twist and drop open.

“Angel Wing can be cured if we reach birds before it has developed too severely,” says Caroline Simpson, a trustee of UK charity Swan Lifeline, “2” Over the last 20 years UK charity Swan Lifeline has rescued and treated more than 30,000 birds. Adult swans can develop heart disease by eating much bread, so it’s important that we do our best to prevent this by feeding them the right kind of food.

3 Rotten bread at the bottom of rivers and lakes allows bacteria to breed, spreading disease and attracting rats and other pests to our waterways, which can result in the presence of a mould (霉菌) called Aspergillus. It has the potential to kill waterfowl and other wildlife if it gets into their lungs.

4 Definitely not. Wild Things Swan & Duck Food has launched the “Better than Bread” Campaign to highlight the risk of a calorific diet to water birds. The campaign advises that there are much healthier alternatives to bread, such as specially developed feeds. They can float on the water surface, so birds can enjoy every last bit. 5

A.So we must stop feeding the ducks.

B.But did you know that bread actually puts birds in danger?

C.Does this mean we have to stop fun trips to feed the ducks?

D.Bread can also cause harmful changes to the natural ecosystem.

E.What a scene it is to watch ducks eating bread floating on the river!

F.Otherwise the consequences can be serious — such as the loss of the wing.

G.Next time take a healthier alternative and do your bit to protect our precious wildlife.

【题目】请阅读下面文字,并按照要求用英语写一篇 150 词左右的文章。

Dear editor,

I was shocked by the news that neighbors of a German university protested to the government that some students often gathered and shouted at night, disturbing local residents. They demanded if the students were not dismissed, they would move out of the area.

I want to ask those young people: When you were letting off screams, were you aware that you were damaging other people’s normal life?

This doesn’t happen by chance. I often witness similar things in our country, too. For example, throwing waste water onto the streets and spitting in public places can frequently be seen. Some tourists litter casually or even carve their names on ancient scenic spots! Many young people are fond of jumping queues and never offer their seats to the elderly.

All over the world, people are beginning to worry that civilized behavior is a thing of the past. In fact, civilized behavior can help bring trust from others and success in the fierce world market competition. Therefore, increasing the quality of citizens is becoming urgent.

【题目】 The care center told us Dad's case was hopeless. Mom took him home and his spirits lifted under her care. Several months later, we decided to fly out and give my mother a break from nursing him.

On the last day of our trip, after finishing his walking treatment, I suggested that he "exercise" his fingers by playing his piano, but the fingers that had once flown over the keys with ease could barely strike one note. Paralysis(瘫痪)had taken away the number-one joy in Dad's life.

Helping him from his wheelchair to the piano bench, I placed his hands on the keys and the list on the piano. Seeing his stiff fingers devastated me and Dad. I lay back in my chair, closed my eyes and expected the worst. I couldn't believe my ears when The War We Were rang out, flowing with feeling and no mistakes. He continued playing down his list.

Quickly wiping my eyes, I felt grateful for what had taken place. I never thought I'd hear my dad's beautiful music again. Dad couldn't grasp what had happened during that hour and seemed confused. Instead of getting back in his wheelchair, he asked me to turn him around on the bench so that we could talk.

Starting with his earliest childhood memories, Dad shared his life story, telling tales I'd never heard before. It was a magical time for us, and we took turns wiping our eyes. When he became silent, I knew this moment had ended.

For the next hour, I found myself reliving priceless memories. Happy tears flowed as my father played every song I'd ever heard growing up, including favorites that we had danced to as children. Apparently, the wonderful stories he'd just shared had sparked his memory.

A.To ease his father's feeling of hopelessness.

【题目】How to Increase Your Distance in Long-Distance Running

Running long distances is a great way to get in shape, reduce stress, and feel great. As a result, many people come to love this form of exercise. 1 Here are some suggestions that might be of great help.

Commit to a training plan. To help you run longer, choose a training plan that works for you. It will help you increase your mileage (里程) gradually so you’ll be able to avoid injuries and build your endurance. 2 Then you’ll be able to mentally and physically prepare.

3 To help you mentally get through your runs and increase your distance, try thinking of your run as having multiple sections. Once you finish with a section, you will be motivated to keep going through the next one. If you have an exercise tracking device, you can break up your run by keeping track of your distance on your phone, watch, or other devices.

Increase your mileage gradually. To avoid getting tired or injured, add mileage to your runs gradually. It is suggested that you increase your mileage by only about 10% each week. 4 While it is great to push yourself, you need to give your body time to adjust.

Take breaks when you need them. While your goal may be to complete your long distance run without stopping, it is more important that you listen to your body and take breaks. You can choose to walk, drink water, or eat a quick snake when necessary. 5

A.Break up your run into sections.

B.They will allow you to recover and run for even longer.

C.Before running, however, remember to prevent injuries.

D.It also lets you know what distance you have coming up.

E.Keep track of your distance on an exercise tracking device.

F.However, it can be hard for both experienced and new runners.

G.The majority of running injuries occur because of over-training.

【题目】 As Wilson Guarin watched the helicopter roaring above, he wondered if the men being lifted into the sky felt the risk had been worth it.

Moments earlier, Guarin and his children had hiked to Hermit Falls in Angeles National Forest, one of the most popular waterfalls in the Los Angeles area. Soon after they arrived, they saw a man dislocate his shoulder when he jumped into the rock pool at the base of Hermit Falls. Less than a minute later, another man jumped and appeared to break both his legs. Guarin said the cliff jumpers' intentions were obvious. They wanted to get a video of themselves and post it to social media.

A thirst among hikers, often inexperienced and under-prepared, to collect "likes" and shares on Instagram and other social media sites has led to a significant increase in rescue missions by first responders.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff' s Department's Search and Rescue teams conducted 681 missions in 2017, the largest number in five years. It' s a 38% increase from the 491 rescues they did in 2013.

The teams' leaders say the single largest factor for that increase is people posting videos of extreme activities online. Then, without any thought about the difficulty, others try to recreate their own 15-second version of glory.

On Instagram, posts from visitors venturing to waterfalls and swimming holes in Angeles National Forest and other recreation areas show hikers changed into models, striking seemingly the same poses in the same places.

We shouldn't discourage people from enjoying the outdoors. But many accidents are avoidable and happen either when people go off trail or ignore official warnings about an area being closed and visit anyway.

Guarin still thinks about the two men he watched hitching helicopter rides to a hospital. "You get concerned about what people are willing to do - to not have fun. It's risking everything for no reason. "

Well, there are the "likes".

1What happened to the two jumpers'?

A.They both got badly injured.

B.They were trapped in a rock pool.

C.They were rescued by the Guarins.

D.They were caught in an air crash.

2What is the main reason for the increase in the number of rescues?

A.Hikers are inexperienced and under-prepared.

B.Helicopters are readily available in more areas.

C.Travelers go off trail or ignore official warnings.

D.More people share their extreme activities online.

3What do the figures imply in paragraph 4?

A.More social rescues are timely and effective.

B.More attention is paid from the social media.

C.More people raise the awareness of self-defense.

D.More public resources are obviously being occupied.

4What does Guarin think of the jumpers' action?

A.It is not a wise thing to do.

B.It is their own version of glory

C.Watching it online is a lot of fun.

D.Getting "likes" makes it worthwhile.
