I went on preparing the rest of th ,and when Doug got home, we sat down to Cornish chicken with rice. He tried to enjoy the meal but seemed . Twice he got up and went outside, saying he heard a

The third time he left, I went to the window to see what he was doing. I saw Doug standing about three feet from the ,holding the lid up with a stick and looking .When I came out of the house, he dropped the stick and explained that there was something in our rubbish bin. Picking up the stick again, he held the lid up enough for me to see. I felt .But I stepped closer and looked harder. Without it was my work. The hot had caused the dough to double in size and the fermenting yeast(酵母})made the surface. and sigh as though it were breathing.

I could see why Doug was shaken. I had to admit what the“ "was and why it was there. I don't know who was more by the whole thing---Doug or me.

Thirteen can be a challenging age. Not only did I have to adapt to my changing body, I also had to deal with my parents’ bitter divorce, a new family and the upsetting move from my country home to a crowded town.

When we moved, my beloved companion, a small brown pony had to be sold. I was heartbroken and terribly lonely. I couldn’t eat or sleep and cried all the time. Finally, realizing how much I missed my pony, my father bought me another horse, Cowboy.

Cowboy was without doubt the ugliest horse in the world. But I didn’t care. I loved him beyond all reasons.

I joined a riding club. When Cowboy and I entered the events where the horse was judged by appearance, we were quickly ”shown the gate”. I knew nothing could turn Cowboy into a beauty. My only chance to compete would be in the timed speed events. I chose the jumping race.

For the whole next month we practiced running and jumping for hours in the hot sun and then I would walk Cowboy home, totally exhausted.

All of our hard work didn’t make me feel confident by the time the show came. One girl named Becky rode a big brown horse in the race events. She always won the blue ribbons. I sat at the gate and sweated all out while I watched Becky and her horse charge through the court and finish in first place.

My turn finally came. At the signal, we dashed toward the first fence, jumped over it without trouble and raced on to the next one. Cowboy then flew over the second, third and fourth fences like a bird and I turned him toward the finish line.

No cheers filled the air. The end of our run was met with surprised silence. Cowboy and I had beaten Becky and her fancy horse by two seconds.

I gained much more than a blue ribbon that day. At thirteen, I realized that no matter what the odds, I’d always come out a winner if I wanted something badly enough to work for it. I can be the owner of my fate.

A. she ought to gather the courage to solve all the problems

The latest fashion in the kitchen is the food steamer. All the stores are selling them;everyone wants one.Steaming is one of the simplest and healthiest ways of cooking food. However, that cooking time is usually longer than with other methods. In case you’re thinking of buying a steamer,I’ve done a survey about the steamers available on the market to help you decide which will suit you best.

Folding Steamer

The simplest and least expensive is the folding stainless-steel(不锈钢)version.

Advantages:This is a good, basic design which sits inside a variety of different shapes of pans with the water under it;a ring in the centre allows for easy lifting and it's easy to clean.

Disadvantages:It only holds small dishes. Also,if you put too much water in the pan,it will boil up through the vegetables and they will be watery. If you put too little water in and let it get dry,you will burn the pan and get strange-smelling vegetables.

Steaming Pan

This is a three-layered black Teflon-coated version with a lid and two double-handled steamers, which sits on the oven ring. The brand I bought is called Nutritious Living.

Advantages:This is an excellent steamer, lightweight, easy to clean, and of all the steamers I’ve tried, this cooks the fastest.Fish and chicken can be cooked on the bottom with rice or vegetables on the top. It’s easier to store.

Disadvantages:Water can boil away until the pan is dry,but if you make sure you fill the pan up to the suggested level and do not overcook the food, this should not happen. You cannot see the food cooking from the top.It doesn’t supply a dish for cooking rice.

For serious users of steamers,I recommend having one of each version. If you just want to try it,get the folding stainless-steel type.

A.it can save time and money

2.Which of the following is true about the folding steamers?

A.They are cheap and easy to use.

C. They can hold all kinds of dishes.

D.You can put little water in the pan.

3.When you use the steaming pan,_________

A.you can overcook the food

B.you can only cook rice

C.you feel it’s heavy to carry

D.you should pour proper amount of water

BEIJING - A research team led by Chinese scientists have discovered dietary modulation of gut microbiota(膳食干预肠道菌群)can alleviate both genetic and simple obesity in children.

The findings of the team, led by Zhao Liping with Shanghai Jiaotong University, Yin Aihua with the Guangdong province children's hospital, and Tang Huiru with Chinese Academy of Sciences, have been published on EBioMedicine, a renowned medical journal co-sponsored by Cell and The Lancet in July.

The team identified bacterial genomes specifically for producing obesity-related metabolites(代谢物), and said an improved gut microbiota can significantly help to treat genetic obesity such as Prader-Willi Syndrome (PWS).

Beginning in childhood, PWS affected kids develop an insatiable appetite, leading to chronic overeating and obesity.

The scientists used a diet therapy with beneficial gut bacteria on trial patients and found considerable diminished appetite, weight loss and improved health conditions on the patients.

The paper concluded dysbiosis (失调)of gut microbiota is highly related with both genetic and simple obesity in children, implicating dietary modulation of gut microbiota a potentially effective treatment method.

1. Which of the following factors contributes to child obesity?

A. dietary modulation of gut microbiota

B. beneficial gut bacteria

C. an improved gut microbiota

D. dysbiosis of gut microbiota

2. Which can replace the underlined word “diminished”?

A. unsatisfied B. increased

C. decreased D. good

3. Where is the passage extracted?

A. Medicine book B. Science book

C. Doctor’s instructions D. News report

4. Which might be the best title for the passage?

A. Chinese scientists discover treatment to child obesity.

B .The reasons for genetic obesity in children has been found.

C. Obesity-related research has been done by Chinese scientists.

D. An effective treatment to obesity has been found.
