题目内容

科I am a mother of three and have recently completed my college degree. The last class I had to take was sociology(社会学). The teacher was really great. The class was asked to go out and smile at three people.
I am a very       person and thought this would be a piece of cake. Soon after, my husband, youngest son and I went out to McDonald’s. We were standing in line, waiting to be       , when all of a sudden everyone around us began to     away, and then even my husband did.
As I turned around I smelled a terrible “dirty body” smell, and there standing behind me were two poor        men. As I looked down at the short gentleman, he was “     ”. His beautiful sky blue eyes were full of God’s Light as he searched for acceptance. He said, “Good day.” as he counted the few       he had been holding.
The young lady at the counter(柜台) asked him what they       . He said, “Coffee is all Miss.” because that was all they could afford. He just needed to be warm.
Then I really        it—the compulsion(冲动) was so great that I almost      out and hugged the little man with the blue eyes.
That is when I noticed all eyes in the restaurant were set on me, judging my every action. I smiled and asked the young lady behind the counter to give        two more breakfast meals on two plates.
I then picked up the plates and walked around the counter to the             that the men had chosen as a resting place. I put the plates on the table and laid my hand on the  blue-eyed gentleman’s        hand. He looked up at me, with tears in his eyes, and said, “Thank you.”
I graduated with one of the biggest lessons I would ever learn:acceptance without condition.

Droughts (干旱)are common in Kenya . Before ,they came every 10 years ,but now they seem to be hitting us more often and for a longer time .
We gave the droughts names :“longoza”was the drought when many animals died ; there was the drought of the “planes” because food was dropped from the air by planes; and one particularly bad drought was called “ man who dies with his money in his fist (拳头)”,because ,even if there was money , there was simply no food to buy .
I was born in 1951 in Machakos. From what my mother tells me , when I was 7, there was a serious drought . I clearly remember the terrible weather and the hunger. I can’t tell you how many times I went to bed without eating . “ I slept like that ,” is how we described it . I can’t count the number of days when “ I slept like that,” or describe the feeling of going to sleep hungry ,knowing I’d wake up and there would still be no food for breakfast.
My father would leave early in the morning carrying a little basket to ask for food on credit (赊欠). Each night he would return home around 10:00p.m. My mother would try to encourage me by telling me to keep the water in our pot boiling so that when my father arrived we could quickly cook any food he brought in the already prepared water . I would keep the fire burning and the water boiling , along with the hopes that we would eat that night. But my father would arrive frustrated and empty -handed. And I would sleep like that.

That was my grandmother's first Christmas without Grandfather. When my parents and I arrived at her little house ,we found she had waited up all night for us.
Grandfather had always said that the Christmas tree was the most important decoration (装饰物) of all. So first we took out the beautiful tree that was stored in the closet (贮藏室). But the star was missing. It was my grandmother's favorite part of the tree.
"Why? It must be somewhere in the closet," my grandmother said.
As we opened up boxes one by one and found no star, my grandmother's eyes were full of tears. Grandfather had given it to her some fifty years ago, on their first Christmas together. But on her first Christmas without him, the star was gone.
The next morning, my family sat down together to open the presents.
"The last gift is to Grandmother from Grandfather," Father said, in a strange voice.
"From whom?" There was surprise in my grandmother's voice.
"I found this gift in Grandfather's closet when we got the tree down," Mother explained.
My grandmother opened the box. There was a shinning (发亮的) golden star and a note in it:
Don't be angry with me, dear. I broke your star while putting away the decorations, and I couldn't bear to tell you. I hope it brings you as much happiness as the first one. Merry Christmas!
Love,                                                                                                                                         Bryant

I had never noticed her. She was not the kind of girl who could draw attention. She was not tall and just looked     . In class, she liked sitting at the back, reading or taking notes. One day I asked her to read aloud the text. When I heard her standard American pronunciation, I looked at her with new eyes. And I     her name—Kelly. Later on, the National College Speech Competition would be held. One student in our school was allowed to attend. I thought it over and filled in      name.
Kelly practiced hard for the competition. However, I was a little worried because she was always too      . Could she do well in the competition?
On the night of the competition, I sat in the front row of the hall very early. I told her to take it easy. Her face turned red and she said nothing. It seemed she was really      . I felt upset, but I just patted her on the shoulder and let her go to draw lots(抽签). As a result, she drew No. 9 while No. 8 was a boy who was very good at giving speeches.
Sure enough, No. 8 was very      . The whole audience made a warm applause (鼓掌)almost every 30 seconds and was still talking about his speech with     until Kelly appeared on the stage. I sat there with no     to look at her. It was her first time to go up the stage, so I couldn’t be angry with her for any small mistakes. But at that moment, I found I was so afraid of her     .
The strong spotlight and large hall made her so small that nobody seemed to notice she had been on the stage. I felt hopeless.
But the moment that      me came. I clearly heard a voice, a very loud voice, “Now, please focus on(聚焦于)me.”
Three times in all, louder and louder.
The whole audience fell silent.
I could          believe that loud voice came from the girl, who was usually soft-voiced and didn’t       attention at all. She gave a perfect speech.
I think I will never forget this touching lesson that my student taught me — never underestimate(低估)the power of the silent people.

Alicia was a young woman who liked to exercise for her health. In fact, she walked five kilometers before      every morning, and went swimming once a week at the swimming pool. She didn’t smoke and never      . She didn’t eat chocolate. She didn’t eat sweet and fatty food,       . She weighted herself every day.
One day Alicia was on her daily walk when she saw a                sitting in a rocking chair under a tree. He looked very old and his hair was white. He looked thin and weak, and his hands were shaking,           he looked very happy.
He smiled at her and said, “Good morning! Lovely day, isn’t it?”
He had a wide smile         his face, and his eyes shone with happiness. But Alicia saw that he did not have teeth.
“Good morning!” replied Alicia. “Yes, it is a lovely day.”
Alicia thought he        very old and wise. She thought he must be at least 90 years old! She decided to ask him about the           of a happy old age.
“I hope you don’t         me asking,” she said, “but what is your secret for being so happy at your age? I hope I can look as happy as you do           I am your age.”
The man in the rocking chair said, “My secret for        ? I smoke twenty packets of cigarettes every week, and drink three bottles of wine every day. I eat hamburgers and chocolates whenever I want. I never eat vegetables. I never walk anywhere and I never play sports. I sit at home every day.”
Alicia was         . She didn’t expect the man to give her an answer like that. She wondered how the man got to be so old when he did        wrong. She thought he should be          and unhappy. Perhaps she was wrong. Maybe, she thought, people could live a long happy life          eating well or doing lots of exercise.
“How old are you?” she asked.
“It’s my birthday today,” said the man. “I’m forty-seven!”

I had said goodbye to my husband, Joe, so often, but this time was      .
We now had our first child. After nights of talks, we made the difficult       that Joe would go by himself to Alabama for the six-month training course, and I would stay behind with our new son. It was important that I      my teaching position(职位)near our home at Fort Hood. Also we were part of a strong network of friends whom I could turn to for help.
On Joe's       evening at home, I bathed little Joey, got him into his sleeper and was heading to the bedroom when Joe gently touched         on the shoulder. Lifting the baby from my arms, he said he wanted to put Joey to bed tonight.
They headed down the hall, and I busied myself with meaningless tasks,      Joe to appear from the bedroom within a few minutes. A half hour went by, and still he had not come back. Thinking he was having       getting our son to fall asleep, I walked quietly to the baby's room and looked into the dimly-lit(灯光暗淡的)room.
Sitting in the rocking chair, moving slowly back and forth, was my husband with tears(眼泪)in his eyes. He was holding our baby in his arms      he had fallen asleep long before. When his pained eyes met mine, he said, "I just can't put him down."
That night we stood over Joey's bed, holding each other and saying over and over that we would make it through this leaving and be        again soon.
Joey is six now, and he has a four-year-old brother named Jack. There have been many goodbyes since that night, yet my soldier still fights back tears when it's time to        once again in service to his country and give his boys that last, long hug(拥抱)goodbye.
