Felix, a little mouse, looked outside through the window of a farmhouse. Still nobody came. Maybe today, he thought hopefully. It was only a few days before Christmas and he was watching for a miracle(奇迹).
This farmhouse had been empty too long. It needed a family. Felix’s stomach made a noise. He realized that he had eaten nothing since yesterday. He took a bag from his home, and went next door to Farmer Mike’s.
Farmer Mike’s house had been a great place for Felix until the farmer married a wife who had a cat. Felix felt scared when he thought of it. He looked around cautiously as he moved quietly into the room and was quite nervous when he filled his bag with rice. He was turning to leave when suddenly he felt something unusual. The cat? Without thinking he started to run and luckily escaped the cat’s paws(爪子).
The next afternoon Felix heard some good news: a new family would move into the farmhouse soon. Felix was happy and hoped that the family would come before Christmas. Before long, a car came up to the house, with sandwiches, cheese and chocolate.
Felix’s Christmas miracle did arrive!
The house came alive the next few days. Felix enjoyed every hour of them. However, the day before Christmas when he was drinking hot chocolate with a big smile, he heard about the gift that the children of the family might get for Christmas. What? A cat? The smile froze(冻结)on his face; his mouth fell wide open. After a long moment, he at last found his voice: “Hey! Whose Christmas miracle is this?”

We have two daughters: Kristen is seven years old and Kelly is four.Last Sunday evening, we invited some people home for dinner.I dressed them nicely for the party, and told them that their job was to join Mommy in answering the door when the bell rang.Mommy would introduce them to the guests, and then they would take the guests’ coats upstairs and put them on the bed in the second bedroom.
The guests arrived.I introduced my two daughters to each of them. The adults were nice and kind and said how lucky we were to have such good kids.
Each of the guests paid too much attention to Kelly, the younger one, admiring her dress, her hair and her smile. They said she was a remarkable girl to be carrying coats upstairs at her age.
I thought to myself that we adults usually make a big “to do” over the younger one because she’s the one who seems more easily hurt.We do it with the best of intention(意图).
But we seldom think of how it might affect the other child.I was a little worried that Kristen would feel she was being outshined (使逊色).I was about to serve dinner when I realized that she had been missing for twenty minutes.I ran upstairs and found her in the bedroom, crying.
I said, “What are you doing, my dear?”
She turned to me with a sad expression and said, “Mommy, why don’t people like me the way they like my sister? Is it because I’m not pretty? Is that why they don’t say nice things about me as much?”
I tried to explain to her, kissing and held her in arms to make her feel better.
Now, whenever I visit a friend’s home, I make it a point(特意做某事) to speak to the elder child first.

These days when you go on vacation, you spend most of your money just getting there. Travel is expensive, but don't stay home only because you are short of money! Here is some advice:
* Travel during off-season if possible. Flights and hotels are very cheaper when tourism is low.
* Choose a hotel that's a little farther from popular attractions. If you're staying several days,
check out prices on vacation homes — it can end up being cheaper than a hotel.
* Take public traffic, such as buses or subway, instead of taking a taxi.
* Plan your meals, and eat like locals. Don't waste money at expensive hotel restaurants or
fast-food chains. Depending on where you stay, it may be cheaper to make food on your own.
* Check online for special discount (折扣) — if you're a student, the old or the parents
traveling with children, you could get discounts! A little research could save you a lot of money.

What’s the meaning of “dark horse”? It’s someone who wins when no one expects it.
Han Xiaopeng took China’s first gold on snow. He became an Olympic “dark horse” last Thursday by winning the gold medal in men’s freestyle aerial skiing(自由式滑雪空中技巧) at Turin in Italy. He made two almost perfect jumps for the highest score. Han had never won a world gold medal before, let alone(更不用说) in the Olympics!
“I never thought this would happen,” said the 23-year-old. “I feel like I’m in a dream.” It’s China’s second gold medal at the Turin Olympics. But more important, Han’s gold was the country’s first ever in a snow sport. In 2002, China’s Yang Yang won the gold for speed skating at the winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, US.
Just because Han’s win was unexpected doesn’t mean that he didn’t work hard.
Han grew up in Jiangsu Province. Before he started his training on snow, he used to be an acrobat(杂技演员) at a circus. In 1995, a coach found his talent(才能). The coach, Yang Er’qi, said Han had the agility(灵活性) and courage to be a ski jumper. When Yang first took the 12-year-old to northern China, the boy couldn’t swim, skate or ski. But he wasn’t afraid of the high platform(跳台) and kept on training.
Han almost left the sport after hurting his knee months before the Salt Lake Games. In that Olympics he only got 24th. “I was hopeless at that time, but my family and the coach stood firmly(坚强地) behind me, helping me through,” he recalled.
Han Xiaopeng worked so hard that he won the gold medal in the Olympics at last. Because of his success, more and more people in China are becoming interested in skiing. We are proud of him and we hope he will have another big success in the next winter Olympics.
