Freya MacDonald, a 15-year-old pupil from Scotland, _________when she refused to accept her school’s punishment. Her family says that she was given 11 detentions for trivial things such as having fizzy drinks in class and coming into school through a fire door.
Freya says that repeated detentions ruined her right to an education under Scottish law and made it difficult for her to learn. So she refused to return until the school respected her civil rights. She wants the headmaster and her teachers to sign a letter to promise this. Hundreds of schools in Scotland were told not to use detention as a punishment because of her legal action.

Last week, 169 Junior One students at No. 35 Middle School of Shenyang took their first no teacher exam. After the teacher handed out the exam papers, he left the room and never came back. A student collected in the papers when the exam was over.
“That test was not only a test of knowledge, but also a test of morality(道德). We wanted to show the students how important honesty(诚实)is,” said the school’s headmaster. Next year, it wants 80% of its exams to be without teachers. But students have different ideas.
“I was happy and excited during the exam because my teachers trusted(信任)me,” said a 15-year –old girl in Class 11.
“Schools must trust students a lot and do not use invigilators(监考人)in exams. But I think it is too early. Some students will cheat(作弊)if there are no invigilators. And the students will not be able to ask for help when they need,” said another student.
“I don’t like having invigilators in exams. When they walk around the classroom, they make me nervous. I would get higher marks without them in the room because I would feel more relaxed,” a third student said.
“I think it’s very important to have invigilators in exams. Many students want to check their answers with each other after they have finished papers. And invigilators can also keep the classroom in order when something unusual happens. They may make me nervous, but I still think we need them,” a girl student said.

1970 was the World Conservation (保护) Year. The United Nations wanted everyone to know that the world is in danger. They hoped that governments (政府) would act quickly in order to conserve nature. Here is one example of the problems. At one time there were 1 300 different plants, trees and flowers in Holland, but now only 860 remain. What will happen in the future? Perhaps it is more important to ask "What must we do now?" The people who will be living in the world of tomorrow are the young people today. A lot of them know that conservation is necessary. Many are helping save our world. They plant trees, protect wild animals, and so on. In a small town in the United States a large group of girls cleaned the 11 kilometer-long banks of the river. Life’s a long, long journey(旅程)” so we are told, and most of us would not set off on a journey, even a short one, without some idea of where we wanted to go. Yet many people travel on life’s journey with no sense of direction at all.
Setting personal goals can give your life a sense of direction. Goal setting is used by top sports players, successful business people and achievers in all fields. Before you set personal goals, think about what you want to achieve with your life.
Try to set goals in some of the following categories (类别).

Family—What kind of relationship do you want with your parents and other family members?
Creative—Do you want to achieve any artistic goals?
Career— What job do you want to take when you grow up? What do you need to make your dream come true?
Public Service—Do you want to make the world a better place?
Physical—Are you fit enough to do the things you want to do?
Pleasure—How do you want to enjoy yourself?
To help make the process (过程) more manageable, divide your goals into smaller tasks. For example, if you want to reach a main goal in five years, set a three-year goal, a one-year goal, a three-month goal and a one-month goal. Then create a daily To-Do List of things that you should do today. When a goal is achieved, take the time to enjoy your success. This helps you build the self-confidence.
Remember, your goals can change as time goes on. But be sure your goals are things you hope to achieve, not what your parents, family or teachers want.
