1、
Last night I was driving from Harrisburg' to Lewisburg,Pennsylvania,a distance of about eighty miles. It was late. Several times I got stuck 36 a slow-moving truck on a 37 road with a solid white line on my left, and l was clenching my fists with impatience.
At one point along an open highway,I came to a 38 with a traffic light. I was alone on the road by now,but as I 39 near the light,it turned red and I 40 to a stop. I looked left, right and ahead of me. 41 .Not a car,no suggestion of headlights, 42 there only I sat, 43 for the light to change, the only human being for at least a mile in any direction.
I started 44 why I refused t0 45 the red light. I was not afraid of being 46 by the police, because there was 47 no police around, and there certainly would have been no 48 in going through it.
Much later that night,49 I had met with a group in Lewisburg and had climbed into bed near 50 ,the question of why I’d stopped 51 that light came back to me. I think I 52 because it’s part of a contract we all have with each other. It’s not only the law,but it’s an arrangement we have, and we 53 each other to honor it:we don’t 54 red lights. Like most of US,I’m more likely to be stopped from doing something bad by the social convention that disapproves of it than by any law against it. I was so 55 of myself for stopping for the red light that night!
