Friendship is the relationship between persons who can help each other in need and who have much in common.

Friendship can make people happy and successful. In my opinion, friendship is one of the most precious things we have for several reasons.First, we can lead a happy life if we have some friends to share feelings, for joy that is shared will be doubled and sorrow shared will be reduced. For instance, I felt a little lonely during my first days after I came to college because it was my first time to be away from my family and away from my old friends.I often felt worried about my study and life.Later, I made friends with some of my fellow students. We talked about our ambitions on how to improve ourselves and how to contribute to society.Through our heart-to-heart talks, we got to know each other well and became eager to help each other. And from then on, whenever I am in trouble, I always have someone to turn to.Now I don’t feel lonely any more but feel that life is really meaningful and enjoyable.Second, the company of friends can help us win success. It is well-known that the friendship between Karl Marx and Engels largely contributed to their great success.Besides great figures, common people can also benefit a great deal from their friendship. For example, in the second year of my college, we were required to take the yearly test for English Majors(Band Four). It is a difficult national examination. While I was preparing for it, I felt very worried. But my friends and I helped and encouraged each other. As a result, we all passed the test with good scores.

Moreover, friendship has an influence on our personalities. To win friendship we should have a pleasant manner. And to keep the friendship that we have obtained we ought to be self-disciplined(自律)and learn to be considerate(体谅).If everybody has friends and knows how to keep friendship, personalities of people will be improved and society will be in harmony(和谐).

So we can say that friendship can do good not only for individuals but also for society, and a society that is full of friendship will be full of love and hope.

Passage 1

There is something in the world. It has no shape, no color and no weight. It can’t be seen or touched. But everyone wants it very much.People try to get it in many ways. Some people think money means it, so they try to make more money; some people believe that knowledge can bring it to them, so they study very hard; some other people find only good health can make themselves get it, so they take part in all kinds of sports and games. Now, you may ask what on earth the mysterious thing is.That’s HAPPINESS.I can’t give you the exact meaning of happiness, but I’m sure if you love and help others, you’ll get it.

I’ll never forget an old lady. She lives in a small house alone. It’s said that her husband and her son died in a traffic accident. What a sorrowful life she has! But the old lady often helps others with a smile.Whenever it snows, she is always the first to clean the paths(小路).She looks after several children living nearby.I am one of them.I often remember the stories she told us and her kind smile.Perhaps she is unlucky, but I think she is a happy person. Her life is full of laughter and love.

But I’m sad to see some people getting their happiness in bad ways. They speak loudly in cinemas and meeting rooms; they destroy trees to enjoy themselves and they laugh at others’ shortcomings.Perhaps they feel happy at that time, but they will never get true happiness because they have destroyed others’ happiness.

Now I know what happiness is.It means kindness, love and unselfishness.Above all, only bringing happiness to others can make yourself happy.

Passage 2

Happiness is the most precious thing in the world, which can be obtained in different ways.

From my point of view, being in a good mood anytime and anywhere is the first thing for those who want to be happy. There is an old saying going like this, “Happiness belongs to somebody who is content.” I still remember a story my mother told me when I was a child.A millionaire tries every means to seek after pleasure but to feel unhappy. But a poor man with nothing always feels happy. Why are they so different? The answer is that the rich man is always thinking how he can gain more while the poor man is satisfied with what he owns at hand-health, freedom, love and so on.

Furthermore, if you have love in your heart, you will have happiness in your life.Love consists of two parts, one is to love others, and the other is to be loved by others.Lei Feng set a good example for all of us.He served the people whole-heartedly until the last minute of his life.He regarded serving the people as the happiest thing. There are numbers of similar inspirational stories to be found. In addition, being loved by others can also lead you to happiness.Courage from your parents when frustrated, care from your lover when ill, help from your friends when in trouble…all of these will make you the happiest person in the world.

The last but not least is to act happily.Putting on a happy face and thinking interesting things are helpful to trigger happy feelings.

While happiness is precious, it is easy to get.

The reasons why we laugh may be products of evolution(进化).Most agree that we laugh when we find something to be humorous, but different reasons exist for what we find to be humorous.Additionally, different things are humorous to us at different stages of life.

Laughter, a physiological response to humor, can be broken down into two parts.

The first is a set of gestures, and the second is the production of sound. The brain conducts both responses at the same time.

Strangely enough, laughter is an orderly response, and almost occurs “spontaneously(本能地)” during pauses at the end of phrases.Human beings are the only species capable of laughter, and one average adult does so approximately(近似地)17 times per day.

Good health is one of the many benefits of laughter.Laughter reduces our stress levels by reducing the level of stress hormones(荷尔蒙), and also helps us cope with serious illnesses.

Physiologically, laughter promotes healing by lowering the blood pressure, by increasing the vascular blood flow and the oxygenation of the blood.

Physical fitness stemming from laughter is a benefit known to few.Scientists estimate that laughing 100 times is equivalent to a 10-minute workout on a rowing machine, or to 15 minutes on a stationary exercise bike.

Another benefit of laughter is that it improves our over-all mental health.Pent up(被压抑的)negative emotions, such as anger, fear, and sadness, can cause biochemical changes in our bodies that can produce a harmful effect.

Laughter provides a harmless outlet(出口)for these negative emotions, and provides a coping mechanism for dealing with difficult or stressful situations.
