Friendship is the relationship between persons who can help each other in need and who have much in common.

Friendship can make people happy and successful. In my opinion, friendship is one of the most precious things we have for several reasons.First, we can lead a happy life if we have some friends to share feelings, for joy that is shared will be doubled and sorrow shared will be reduced. For instance, I felt a little lonely during my first days after I came to college because it was my first time to be away from my family and away from my old friends.I often felt worried about my study and life.Later, I made friends with some of my fellow students. We talked about our ambitions on how to improve ourselves and how to contribute to society.Through our heart-to-heart talks, we got to know each other well and became eager to help each other. And from then on, whenever I am in trouble, I always have someone to turn to.Now I don’t feel lonely any more but feel that life is really meaningful and enjoyable.Second, the company of friends can help us win success. It is well-known that the friendship between Karl Marx and Engels largely contributed to their great success.Besides great figures, common people can also benefit a great deal from their friendship. For example, in the second year of my college, we were required to take the yearly test for English Majors(Band Four). It is a difficult national examination. While I was preparing for it, I felt very worried. But my friends and I helped and encouraged each other. As a result, we all passed the test with good scores.

Moreover, friendship has an influence on our personalities. To win friendship we should have a pleasant manner. And to keep the friendship that we have obtained we ought to be self-disciplined(自律)and learn to be considerate(体谅).If everybody has friends and knows how to keep friendship, personalities of people will be improved and society will be in harmony(和谐).

So we can say that friendship can do good not only for individuals but also for society, and a society that is full of friendship will be full of love and hope.

Tom Dyson tried to find out what his new machine could do. One day he fixed the small box to a flowering plant that was growing in a pot. He didn't say anything at all, but he began to think some cruel thoughts.

“I'm going to cut off these flowers. They're getting old and ugly. So I'll cut them off…”

The needle on the machine climbed quickly from  zero to 8, then 10, 12, 15. It stopped at 17. The plant was in trouble! Something was worrying it. Was it fear or sadness? The thought of being cut? The flowers bent their heads. They suddenly looked old and tired, and Tom felt sorry for them.

“No, no!” he cried.“I won't cut you. You're my friends. I just want you to grow and be lovely. I'll take you outside, into the sunshine. You'll like that, won't you?”

The flowers lifted their heads slowly and seemed to smile at him. The needle returned to zero. Tom put away the machine, picked up the plant and walked outside. It was very nice in the garden that morning.

All plants enjoy their owner's love and care and kindness. They know the sound of their voice. They also seem to understand people's thoughts. Some people have very good memories, and can easily learn quite long poems by heart. There are other people who can only remember things when they have said them over and over.

Charles Dickens, the famous English author, said that he could walk down any long street in London and then tell you the name of every shop he had passed. Many great men of the world have had wonderful memories.

A good memory is a great help in learning a language. Everybody learns his own language by remembering what he hears when he is a small child. Some children--like boys and girls who live abroad with their parents seem to learn two languages almost as easily as one. In school it is not easy to learn a second language because the pupils have so little time for it, and they are busy with other subjects as well.

The human mind is rather like a camera, but it takes photographs not only of what we see but of what we feel, hear, smell and taste. When we take a real photograph with a camera, there is much to do before the photograph is finished and ready to show to our friends. In the same way there is much work to be done before we can make a picture remain forever in the mind.

1.How do most people remember things according to the text?

[ ]

A.Most people remember things as soon as they come across them.

B.Most people remember things through repeating them over and over.

C.Most people remember things by accident.

D.Most people remember things with others reminding.

2.A person, like Charles Dickens, _____.

[ ]

A.likes remembering the names of the shops

B.can write novels by memory

C.can learn languages very quickly

D.can learn things easily by heart

3.What should we do with the photographs we have taken in order to show them to our friends?

A.We should remember what we have taken.

B.The film has to be developed first.

C.Make a picture remain forever in our minds.

D.Take a real photograph with our friends.

4.Good memory is important _____.

[ ]

A.only in learning a foreign language

B.because it is very helpful in learning languages

C.if we should memorize a long poem

D.to do any job

5.According to the text which of the following statements is right?

[ ]

A.Only great men have good memory.

B.Memory is important only in learning foreign languages.

C.Memory is like a camera in some ways.

D.Memory is a camera.

On the first day of school we were challenged to get to know a new classmate.I was looking around, when a gentle hand touched my shoulder.I found a little old lady with a warm smile.

She said, “Hi, handsome! I'm Rose.I'm 87 years old.Can I give you a hug(拥抱)?” I laughed and heartily responded, “Of course!”

“Why are you in college at such a young, innocent(天真的)age?” I asked.

She jokingly replied, “I'm here to meet a rich husband, get married, have children, and then travel around.”

“No, seriously,” I asked.I was curious why she took on this challenge at this age.

Over the year, Rose became a campus icon(偶像)and she easily made friends wherever she went. She loved to dress up and she enjoyed the attention from the other students. She was living it up

At the end of the term we invited Rose to speak at our football banquet.I'll never forget what she taught us.

“We do not stop playing because we are old; we grow old because we stop playing. Here are the secrets to staying young. You have to laugh and find humor every day. You've got to have a dream. When you lose your dreams, you die.We have many people walking around who are dead, and they don't even know it!” she said.

“There is a huge difference between growing older and growing up.Anybody can grow older. That doesn't take any talent or ability,” she added.“But growing up requires finding the opportunity in change. The elderly usually don't have regrets for what they did, but rather for things they did not do.”

One week after graduation that year, Rose died peacefully in her sleep. She taught us by example that it's never too late to be all you can possibly be.
