It is said that every scientist has a childhood dream of his or her future success. For Yuan Longping, the dream was that he would grow grains of rice as large as peanuts(花生), and that farmers could relax in the large shadow of their plants.
His dream came true.Yuan is known as China’s “father of hybrid rice(杂交水稻).”
He is known for creating a type of rice that has a high yield(产量).
The 72-year-old scientist was born in Beijing. He came up with the idea of hybridizing rice in the 1960s, when China was suffering serious famine(饥荒).Ten years later, he grew a new species that produced a 20 percent higher yield than common types of rice.
Compared with the ordinary rice, the hybrid is highly adaptable(适应性强的).It is a stronger plant that can better bear drought(干旱)or water-logging(水涝), as well as diseases and worms.
Half of China’s rice crops are Yuan’s special rice. And the country’s total rice production has greatly increased.
Today, Yuan continues to try and increase the yield of rice.If you ask him whether rice quality or quantity should come first, his answer is always the latter(后者).
“First we must have enough food; then we must eat well,” he said. But, he adds that high yield does not necessarily mean low quality.
Now, Yuan is working on another “Super Rice, ” of which yields are 30 percent higher than common rice.
Money and fame follow such great achievements.A seed company in Shenzhen uses Yuan’s name and in return, he gets a share of 2 million yuan.
But, he said, “That figure means nothing.I’m satisfied with my life.Too much money is a burden(负担).”
And having devoted most of his life to growing rice in paddy fields(稻田), Yuan looks just like a farmer. From sowing to harvesting, Yuan goes out to the fields twice a day, covering a distance of about 8 km on his motorbike, which has become one of his main hobbies.

A hobby can be almost anything a person likes to do in his spare time.Hobbyists raise pets, build mode ships, weave baskets, watch birds, hunt animals, climb mountains, raise flowers, fish, ski, skate, and swim.Hobbyists also paint pictures, attend concerts and plays, and perform on musical instruments. They collect everything from books to butterflies, and from shells to stamps.
People take up hobbies because these activities offer enjoyment, friendship, knowledge and relaxation.Sometimes they even yield financial profit.Hobbies help people relax after periods of hard work, and provide a balance between work and play.Hobbies also offer interesting activities for persons who have retired.Anyone, rich or poor, old or young, sick or well, can follow a satisfying hobby, regardless of his age, position, or income.
Hobbies can help a person’s mental and physical health.Doctors have found that hobbies are valuable in helping patients recoverfrom physical or mental illness.Hobbies give bedridden or wheel-chair patients something to do, and provide interests that keep them from thinking about themselves. Many hospitals treat patients by having them take up interesting hobbies or pastimes.
In early times, most people were too busy making a living to have many hobbies. But some persons who had leisure did enjoy hobbies. The ancient Egyptians played games with balls made of wood or pottery.
People today have more time than ever before for hobbies.Machines have reduced the amount of time they must spend on their jobs.Hobbies provide variety for workers who do the same monotonous(单调的)tasks all day long.More people are retiring than ever before, and at an earlier age. Those who have developed hobbies never need to worry about what to do with their newly-found leisure hours.
Sir William Osler, a famous Canadian doctor, expressed the value of hobbies by saying“No man is really happy or safe without a hobby.”

It is natural that children are curious about the world around them. For example, they want to know how their hearts beat. They want to know why the ocean water tastes salty.
As children grow up, they become curious about different kinds of things. When they are babies, they are interested in the parts of their bodies and in the smiles of their mothers. They become interested in the physical world around them:the plants, the animals, the sky.Later, they become interested in the things that people have made:wheels, bicycles, cars. And when they are adults, their curiosity continues.Sometimes this curiosity leads to a career in science.
Scientists spend their lives trying to find out about the world. Those who work with the earth sciences study the earth, the oceans, and the skies.Other scientists who study living things work with the biological sciences.A third group of scientists study the physical sciences, e.g.physics, chemistry.
These scientists have already discovered a lot about our world. For example, they tell us why your heart beats fast when you run. They say that when you are quiet, your heart normally beats sixty-five or seventy-five times a minute.Your heart is a pump(泵)that pumps blood to all parts of the body. The blood carries oxygen and nutrition. When you run, your muscles work very hard and use the nutrition that the blood carries to them. The muscles need oxygen, too.So your brain sends a signal to the heart. The signal means that the muscles need more nutrition and oxygen. Then the heart beats fast and sends blood quickly to the muscles. It may beat 90 to 140 times a minute.
Of course, scientists cannot answer all of our questions. If we ask, “Why does the ocean water taste salty” scientists will say that the salt comes from rocks. When a rock gets very hot or very cold, it cracks.Rain falls into cracks. The rain then carries the salt into the earth and into the rivers. The rivers carry the salt into the ocean. But then we ask, “What happens to the salt in the ocean? The ocean does not get saltier every year.” Scientists are not sure about the answer to this question.
We know a lot about our world, but there are still many answers that we do not have, and we are curious.

The House Committee on Pollution(HCP)held a special meeting last night to discuss the Albanian cans.A difficult situation arose last week after the Albanians had refused to allow an international environmental organization to test cans of industrial waste that they were throwing into the Sea of Japan. It was thought that the cans may have contained nuclear waste, even though the Albanians have strongly denied this.
Six crew members from the Greenpeace ship “Tiger 2”, which is still closely monitoring the Albanian ship, secretly went aboard at night and took away one of the waste cans. The first test results of the waste in the can suggest nuclear waste rather than other industrial waste according to a report from the Japan laboratory where the tests are being carried out.Further tests are necessary to determine the exact level of nuclear content.
The Greenpeace action has annoyed the Albanians but the Foreign Secretary here has insisted that the Albanian ship leave the Sea of Japan and return home immediately. The Albanians, not surprisingly, have refused to do so, and demanded that “Tiger 2” be called off from watching them.
The International Community is suggesting that the Albanian ship be properly searched and is saying that it is very important and necessary that no more cans are thrown until the truth of this matter is made clear.Obviously, the Japanese government is particularly anxious to discover exactly what is being thrown so close to their northern islands, possibly polluting their fishing industry and putting people’s lives in danger. The International Community is to meet with the Albanian government tomorrow for the third time in a week.

Whether the hair is long or short, it must be brushed and regularly washed. For greasy hair, especially if the owner lives in a town, it may be necessary to wash the head every four or five days. Those with a dry hair can usually go a little longer, but this is a matter for the individual to decide.
If a woman is not able to go to the hairdresser’s very often, it is important that she choose a style she can easily manage for herself, and this nearly always means that the first cut must be very standard. The same applies to permanent waving(电烫).Ideally this should be carried out three or four times a year, so that the hair never gets out of hand.
One thing should be remembered though, that is, whatever you apply to the head can have some effect upon the skin and therefore anything strong should be used with care.Or you may use softer products. As for style, this must be studied according to what is the latest fashion and also to suit the individual at different times of her life.
Young people who have spots or skin troubles on their faces, should take particular care to make sure that the hair is both clean and does not come into contact with the affected piece of skin.Hair is very difficult to keep completely clean and therefore anyone running their hands through their hair and afterwards touching their faces, or letting their hair fall over their faces, might spread infection(感染)from one place to another.Good hair does a lot to the effect of a face, so if you want to look delightful, please start with your hair.
