Reading Comprehension

Read the following passages, and choose the best answer that can answer the question.

You may think that English dictionaries have been used for many, many centuries. In fact, an English dictionary like the kind you use today wasn't made until the time of the Qing Dynasty. Three men did most of the important early work on dictionaries:Samuel Johnson, Noah Webster, and James Murray. These men spent nearly all of their lives trying to collect words for their dictionaries. For them, it wasn't only a job; it was a wonderful journey. The largest dictionary in the world is the Oxford English Dictionary, or OED for short. The idea for this dictionary came from an important meeting in Britain in 1857. Twenty-two years later, Oxford University asked James Murray to be the editor of its new dictionary.

Murray had never been to college. At the age of fourteen, he left his village school in Scotland and taught himself while working in a bank, hater he became a great teacher. After Oxford gave him the job, Murray had a place built in the garden behind his house to do his work. Part of it was one meter underground. In winter it felt like a barn, he had to wear a heavy coat and put his feet in a box to keep warm. Every morning, Murray got out of bed at five o'clock and worked several hours before breakfast. Often he would work by candle light into the evening. Murray hoped to finish the new dictionary in ten years. But after five years, he was still adding words for the letter A! Then others went to work with Murray, including his two daughters. He worked on the dictionary until he was very old. Forty-four years later, in 1928, other editors finished it. It included more than 15, 000 words in twelve books. And you thought your English dictionary was big!

To face the music

Like every language, American English is full of special expressions, phrases that come from the day-to-day life of the people and develop in their own way. Our expression today is “to face the music”.

When someone says, “Well, I guess I'll have to face the music,” it does not mean he's planning to go to the concert. It is something far less pleasant, like being called in by your boss to explain why you did this and did that, and why you didn't do this or that. Sour music indeed, but it has to be faced. At sometime or another, every one of us has had to face the music, especially as children. We can all remember father's angry voice, “I want to talk to you,” and only because we did not obey him. What an unpleasant business it was!

The phrase “to face the music” is familiar to every American, young or old. It is at least 100 years old. And where did this expression come from? The first explanation comes from the American novelist, James Fenimore Cooper. He said, in 1851, that the expression was first used by actors while waiting in the wings to go on the stage. When they got their cue to go on, they often said, “Well, it's time to face the music.” And that is exactly what they did-facing the orchestra which was just below them. And an actor might be frightened or nervous as he moved on to the stage in front of an audience that might be friendly or perhaps hostile, especially if he forgot his lines. But he had to go out. If he did not, there would be no play. So the expression “to face the music” came to mean “having to go through something, no matter how unpleasant the experience might be, because you knew you had no choice”

Other explanations about the expression go back to the army. When the men faced inspection by their leader, the soldiers would be worried about how well they looked. Was their equipment clean, shinny enough to pass inspection? Still the men had to go on and face the music of the band as well as the inspection. What else could they do?

Another army explanation is more closely related to the idea of facing the results and accepting the responsibility for something that should not have been done. As, for example, when a man is forced out of the army because he did something terrible, he is dishonored. The band does not play. Only the drums tap a sad, slow beat. The soldier is forced to leave, facing such music as it is and facing the back of his horse.

Reading Comprehension

Read the following passages, and choose the best answer that can answer the question.

We can make mistakes at any age. Some mistakes we make are about money. But most mistakes are about people. “Did Jerry really care when I broke up with Helen?” “When I got that great job, did Jim really feel good about it, as a friend? Or did he envy(嫉妒) my luck?” “And Paul-why didn't he pick up that he was friendly just because I had a car?” When we look back, doubts like these can make us feel bad. But when we look back, it's too late.

Why do we go wrong about our friends or our enemies? Sometimes what people say hides their real meaning. And if we don't really listen we will miss the meaning behind the words, Suppose someone tells you, “You're a lucky dog,” that's being friendly. But “lucky dog”? There's a bit of envy in those words. Maybe he doesn't see it himself. But bringing in the “dog” bit puts you down a little. What he may be saying is that he doesn't think you deserve your luck.

“Just think of all the things you have to be thankful for” is another noise that says one thing and means another. It could mean that the speaker is trying to get you to see your problem as part of your life as a whole. But is he? Wrapped(包起来) up in this phrase is the thought that your problem isn't important. It's telling you to think of all the starving people in the world when you haven't got a date for Saturday night.

How can you tell the real meaning behind someone's words One way is to take a good look at the person talking. Do his words fit the way he looks? Does what he says agree with the tone of voice? His posture(姿态)? The look in his eyes? Stop and think. The minute you spend thinking about the real meaning of what people say to you may save another mistake.

You must learn to treat your friend the way you want your friend to treat you. Learning to be a good friend means learning three rules:be honest; be generous; be understanding.

Honesty is where a good friendship starts. Friends must be able to trust one another. If you don't tell the truth, people usually find out. If a friend finds out that you haven't been honest you may lose your friend's trust. Good friends always count on one another to speak and act honestly.

Generosity means sharing and makes a friendship grow. You don't have to give your ideas and feelings. These can be very valuable to friends. They tell your friend what is important to you. By sharing then you help your friend know you better.

Dreaming happens when the memory and imagination in parts of your brain are still awake. Experiments have shown that most of us dream in color. Bad dreams may be caused by stomachache. Don't worry if you dream. Some great stories and poems were begun while their writers slept.

Why must we pay taxes? The answer is that the government needs money for many things, for example, to pay its soldiers, sailors and airmen, to build roads, bridges, offices, schools, etc. and to buy goods from abroad; and only the people of the country can supply the money. One of the most important taxes is the income-tax which a person pays according to the amount of his income, whether he is a businessman, a doctor, a lawyer, a shopkeeper, a miner, or anything else. This is called a “direct” tax, because it is paid in money directly to the government.

Another tax is paid on goods such as watches, jewellery, new clothes, tobacco, wine, etc. When they are brought into a country, such a tax is paid as part of the price of these goods if they are later sold in shops. We call it “indirect” tax, because it is paid indirectly through the shopkeeper.

People usually complain about having to pay taxes, but they forget that the money is spent on the things that they and their families need. We need policemen to catch thieves, to see if men obey the laws, to direct traffic, etc. and they must be paid for what they do; children need education and there must be schools and teachers; we want our streets to be kept clean, and the wages of men who do this kind of work have to be paid. Above all, the country must always be ready to defend itself against attacking enemies, and we cannot have an army without paying for it.

Taxes, therefore, cannot be avoided. We buy our own food and clothes and pay for our own amusements, but there are several things that the State finds the money for, and that is necessary for us if our society is to continue. So we have no real cause to complain when we are asked to supply money to be spent for the good of ourselves and for our fellow-citizens.

1.“Indirect” tax means ________.

[ ]

A.the tax that one pays directly to the government

B.the tax that is not paid directly to the government

C.the tax that is paid as extra amount added to the price of certain goods

D.both B and C

B.Income-tax is an "indirect" tax.

C.The tax on new clothes is paid in money directly to the government.

D.Tax is an amount of money that you have to pay to the government so that it can pay for public services.

3.People have no real reason to complain about having to pay taxes because ________.

[ ]

A.some shopkeepers are very rich

B.they need money to buy goods from abroad

C.their children need education

D.the money is spent on the things that they and their families need

The law says women should have the chance of doing the same jobs as men and earn the same as them.

The reality is very different. Women lose because, 25 years after the Equal Pay Act, many of them still get paid less than men.

They lose because they do lower-paid jobs which men just won't consider. And they lose because they are the ones who interrupt a career to have children.

All this is reported in an independent study ordered by the Government's women's unit.

The biggest problem isn't equal pay in workplaces such as factories. It is the sort of work women do.

Make a list of low-paid jobs——then consider who does them.

Try nurses, secretaries, cleaners, clerks, teachers in primary schools, dinner ladies and child-care helpers. Not a lot of men among that group, are there? Yet some of those jobs are really important. Surely no one would deny that about nurses and teachers, for a start.

So why do we reward the people who do them so poorly? There can be only one answer-because they are women.

This is not going to be put right overnight. But the Government, which employs a lot of them, and other bosses have to make a start.

It is disgraceful that we have been in the 21st Century still treating women like second-class citizens.

1.Women should have the chance of doing the same jobs and be paid equally as men ________.

[ ]

A.after 25 years

B.according to the law

C.as a result of the Equal Pay Act

D.because women are as strong as men

2.We can learn from the text what the problem really matters is ________.

[ ]

A.that women interrupt a career to have children

B.what sort of work women do

C.because they are women

D.that an unfair pay women get in workplaces

3.Which of the following best describes the writer's idea?

[ ]

A.Women should get equal pay for work to that of men.

B.Women should strengthen themselves.

C.The Government ought to protect women against getting paid less than men.

D.Some of the jobs that women do are of great importance.

4.Which do you think would be the best title for this passage?

[ ]

A.Work To Give Women A Fair Pay

B.Time To Change The Situation

C.Equal Work, Equal Pay

D.Should Women Be Treated Like Second-class Citizens?
