The scene in the Hollywood movie The Day After Tomorrow, where global warming could soon turn the global climate(气候) into a new ice age may never occur, according to new research.

The next ice age could be 15 000 years away, say European scientists who last month announced a continuous record of 740 000 years of climate data(数据) obtained from the Antarctic ice.

Scientists from 10 nations have now almost completely drilled through a 3000-meter depth of ice high in the Antarctic mainland. They figure out that the area where summer temperatures can fall to -40 ℃,has at least 900 000 years of snowfalls, kept as neatly as the growth rings of a tree. And the ice and air caught in each layer(层)have begun to answer questions about the climates in the past.

The results show that there have been eight ice ages in the past 740 000 years and eight warmer periods. And by comparing the pattern of global condition today with those of the past, the researchers reported in Nature that the present warm period could last another 15 000 years.?

Research suggests that there is a very close connection between greenhouse gas levels and global average temperatures. It also shows that carbon dioxide(二氧化碳) levels are the highest for at least 440 000 years.?

“If people say to you:the greenhouse effect is a good thing because we would go into ice age otherwise, our data say no,a new ice age is not hanging over our heads,”said Eric Wolff from the British Antarctic Survey.“Now we have eight examples of how the climate goes in and out of ice ages... and you can learn what the rules are that go into the climate models that tell us about the future.”

Scientists found that whenever temperatures rose in the frozen record,so did carbon dioxide level.“In 440 000 years we have never seen greenhouse gas get as thick as it is today,”said Dr Wolff.

A.separating carbon dioxide from the air?

B.examining the growth rings of trees?

C.comparing temperatures in different areas?

D.studying the ice and air caught in each layer

3.We can infer from Eric Wolff's words that__________.?

A.there is something wrong with the data?

B.greenhouse effect is always a bad thing?

C.a new ice age will not come in the near future?

D.greenhouse gas will get thick in the future

Anxiety is the appropriate emotion when the immediate personal terror—of a volcano, an arrow,a stab(刺伤) in the back and other disasters, all directed against one's self-disappears.?

The kind of world that produces anxiety is actually a world of relative safety,a world in which no one feels that he himself is facing sudden death. The anxiety exists as an uneasy state of mind,in which one has a feeling that something unspecified and indeterminable may go wrong. If the world seems to be going well, this produces anxiety—for good times may end.If the world is going badly—it may get worse.Anxiety tends to be without focus;the anxious person doesn't know whether to blame himself or other people. He isn't sure whether it is the current year of the administration or a change in climate or the atom bomb that is to blame for this undefined sense of unease.?

It is clear that we have developed a society which depends on having the right amount of anxiety to make it work...While we agree that too much anxiety is harmful to mental health,we have come to rely on anxiety to push us into seeing a doctor about a symptom which may indicate cancer, into checking up on that old life-insurance policy which may have out-of-date provisions in it,into having a conference with Billy's teacher even though his report card looks all right.?

People who are anxious enough keep their car insurance up,have the brakes checked, don't take a second drink when they have to drive.People who are too anxious either refuse to go into cars at all—and so complicate the ordinary course of life—or drive so tensely and carefully that they help cause accidents.People who aren't anxious enough take chance after chance, which increases the terrible accidents of the roads.?

Language as a System of Symbols of all systems of symbols(符号),language is the most highly developed. It has been pointed out that human beings,by agreement, can make anything stand for anything.Human beings have agreed,in the course of centuries of mutual(相互的) dependency,to let the various noises that they can produce with their lungs, throats, tongues, teeth, and lips systematically stand for certain happenings in their nervous systems. We call that system of agreements language.

There is no necessary connection between the symbol and that which it stands for.Just as social positions can be symbolized by feathers worn on the head,by gold on the watch chain,or by a thousand other things according to the culture we live in,so the fact of being hungry can be symbolized by a thousand different noises according to the culture we live in.

However, obvious these facts may appear at first glance, they are actually not so obvious as they seem except when we take special pains to think about the subject. Symbols and the things they stand for are independent of each other, yet we all have a way of feeling as if,and sometimes acting as if,there were necessary connections. For example, there are people who feel that foreign languages are unreasonable by nature: foreigners have such funny names for things, and why can't they call things by their right names? This feeling exhibits itself most strongly in those English and American tourists who seem to believe that they can make the natives of any country understand English if they shout loud enough.Like the little boy who is reported to have said:“Pigs are called pigs because they are such dirty animals,” they feel the symbol is inherently(内在地) connected in some way with the things symbolized.

1.Language is a highly developed system of symbols because human beings ________.

A.have made use of language for centuries

B.use our nervous systems to support language

C.have made various noises stand for any events

D.can make anything stand for anything by agreement

B.Our culture determines what a symbol stands for.

C.The language we use symbolizes our social positions.

D.Our social positions determine the way we are dressed.

3.In Paragraph 3,“take special pains”probably means “_________”.

A.try very hard B.take our time

C.are very unhappy D.feel especially painful

4.The example of the little boy is used to show that _________.

A.adults often learn from their young

B.“pig” is a dirty word because pigs are dirty

C.words are not connected with the things they stand for

D.people sometimes have wrong ideas about how language works

People sometimes put their love message in a heartshaped box of chocolates,or a bunch of flowers tied with red ribbons(带子).Words of letters may be written on the flower covered card,or something else.Whatever the form may be,the message is almost the same:“Will you be my Valentine?”?

With kings, artists and writers playing chess, you might get the idea that chess is the most civilized game. But you'd be wrong.

A Scandinavian manuscript(手稿),900 years old, tells of how one player, who lost a game, picked up the board and hit his opponent on the head with it.Boards were made of stone in those days.

Grandmasters have called it “a blood sport”,“like a fight to the death with broken bottles” and “very dangerous—you have to kill people”.

If you agree with the old saying that life is too short for chess, play blitz chess.Five minutes on the clock.Non-players think chess is slow and boring, but blitz is an extremely exciting sport. And as aggressive(进攻性的) as any martial art(武术).In parks in Russia, where they gather in summer to play blitz, the players don't just take pieces, they knock them off the board onto the ground. And in the classic game, even world championship players have been known to kick each other under the table.

With all this aggression, and the stories of nervous breakdowns among chess players, it's worth remembering that chess can heal as well as harm.My own favourite chess story is that of John Healy. His autobiography(自传),?The Grass Arena, was made into a great film by the BBC.Healy was a failed boxer who became the most serious kind of alcoholic(酒鬼).He became homeless. The bottle nearly killed him.But in prison,he discovered chess, and managed to give up drinking completely. He is now a successful chess player, journalist and writer.

Healy is played in the film by the British actor Mark Rylance. It's the performance of a lifetime—chess makes surprisingly good cinema. There is a moving scene where Healy tries to find the words to describe how his life has changed.“It's like boxing again...but not with fists...with the mind.”

1.The underlined sentence in the second paragraph suggests ________.
