Even Higgs, I thought, wouldn't be able to find me here.

I sat down by the edge of the lake and, pulling 5 my shoes and socks, put my 6 in the water. It was cold, like ice. After a moment I 7 over and spread some of the 8 on my hot face. I could see myself unclearly in the water staring at me like a 9 .

I realized suddenly how 10 I was of running away. Surely, I thought I could live here for a few days, out of 11 of Higgs and his men. White I tried to 12 some plans for the future, I found a tiny wooden house on the far side of the 13 with sane smoke coming from its roof. I still had a little money. Perhaps they would give me a 14 and some food.

As I watched, a men came out of the house and down to a little 15 at the lake side. He got into it and began to move 16 towards my side. I could not see his 17 at first. In the winter of 1990, I was asked to appear on a television talk show in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. At the end of our first day of taping (录音), I was on my way back to my hotel, 1 I saw something I'd never seen before.

Lying on the sidewalk (人行道) 2 a building, in four inches of snow, was a man sleeping with only a cardboard (纸板) blanket. What really 3 my heart was when I realized that he wore no shoes and 4 . I had seen him 8 go about his business every day while I was there, and he never said a word except“Good morning”or“Can I help you, sir?”He always had 9 to give to everyone. When I asked him how he was feeling today, he told me that he'd been having to ride his bike to work in the snow and that he'd been feeling rather 10 for himself…that is, until he saw a man sleeping down on the corner of Yunge Street and Bloor with just a piece of cardboard for 11 him from cold and no shoes. I almost choked on my coffee as I heard him go on to relate how he was so 12 with compassion (同情) for the man that he went 13 the corner to a store and bought the man a pair of socks and shoes.

I stood there 14 it was I who had bought the shoes and socks for the man, when they called my name to come to the 15 . As I got to the studio, they were just 16 an interview with a social worker who specialized in benevolence (慈善事业) for eastern Ontario. The social worker told a story about Mother Teresa, who when 17 once how she had achieved such great things in her life answered,“ 18 of us can do a big thing by himself, but we can do a small thing with great 19 .”

When I went home that day, I looked for the man on the street. He was gone, but I knew it 20 be long before someone took his place.

What happens actually when we read? Some people think that we read one word 1 , understand it and then go on to the next. Other people think that our eyes smoothly 2 over each line from left to right, then back to the beginning of the 3 line, and so on. In fact, the physical action d reading usually doesn't work in 4 of other ways.

5 you do this experiment with a friend. 14 to be this starting and stopping movement 15 the eyes can see only when it's not moving. Every time the eye 16 it sees a phrase or even a sentence, then jumps to the next part of the line, and so on.

There is another interesting fact about eye movement. You will notice that 17 , the reader goes back and looks again at something he 18 before; in other words, he returns to an earlier part of the text probably because he 19 he is not understanding it properly. Then he comes back to 20 he stopped and continues reading.

My Experience in a Free School

At first I couldn't believe it! There were no 1 in rows; no bells rang; no one had to go to 2 . Athough we all lived“in”, 3 made us go to bed at a certain time; there was no“lights out”.

The 4 thing was that practically all the students went to class, 5 very few people stayed up late at night. Only the new people stayed up or missed class. The new ones always went wild 6 , but this never lasted long. The freedom took some getting used to. Our teachers treated us like 7 ; never did we have to 8 “stand up”,“sit down”,“speak out”.I don't 9 one student who didn't try his beat.

The subjects were the same as those in 10 school, but what a difference in the approach (方式)! For example, in botany (植物学) we had 11 classes in the spring or fall, but instead we 12 two gardens, a vegetable garden and a flower garden. Then in winter we each studied a few 13 think about what we had grown. In maths the students built three different kinds of storerooms—small ones 14 , but usable. They did this instead of having lessons in the classroom. They really had a 15 time, too, designing everything, drawing the blueprints, figuring out the angles(角度) and so on. I didn't take 16 . I can't stand it! Besides, I could do the basic things with numbers. That's 17 !

So I think I am a 18 person for having gone to the school. I can read and write as well as anyone else my age, and I can think better. That's probably a real big 19 between the free school and regular school—the amount of 20 .
