Mr Jones woke very early one morning when the sun had risen . It was a beautiful morning , so he went to the window and looked 1 . He was surprised to see a neatly dressed, middle-aged professor, who worked in the university just up the road from Mr Jones's house, coming 2 the direction of town. He had gray hair and thick glasses, and was carrying an umbrella, 3 newspaper and a bag. Mr Jones thought that he 4 by the night train and decided to walk to the university 5 taking a taxi .

Mr Jones had a big tree in his garden, and the children had tied a long rope to one of its branches, 6 they could swing 7 it .Mr Jones was surprised to see the professor stop when he saw the rope and look carefully up and down the 8 . When he saw that there was 9 in sight, he stepped into the garden (there was no fence) , put his umbrella, newspaper, bag and hat neatly on the grass and took hold of the rope . He 10 it hard to see whether it was 11 enough to take his 12 , then 13 as fast as he could and swing into the 14 on the end of the rope, his grey hair 15 all around his face. Backwards and forwards he swung occasionally 16 a few more running steps on the grass when the rope began to swing too 17 for him.

At last the professor stopped, straightened his tie, combed his 18 carefully, put on his hat, picked up his umbrella, newspaper and bag and continued 19 his way to the university, looking as quiet and correct and respectable as one would 20 a professor to be .

Some people cannot learn in ordinary schools. Physical or 1 handicap (残疾) prevents a child from learning. Today new 2 are being used in special schools to help the disabled learn.

A school is being 3 in New Jersey, USA. It is called Bancroft .Here the disabled will be trained to support themselves and to get along in the outside world. Bancroft is not surrounded by 4 of any kind . Its director insists that it be open so that students may gradually develop 5 relations with the rest of the world. Bancroft students will live in apartments, cooking their own meals, and learning to perform other 6 . As they become 7 , they will buy their own furniture, paying for it out of their own 8 . They will pay for their food, too. They will learn to expect 9 bills for the calls they make every month .

As a step toward the goal of becoming 10 , each disabled person will decide what kind of work he wants to be trained to do. While some of the training will be 11 on within Bancroft itself, most of the students will receive 12 training in nearby towns. They will be trained by town people .

After the training has been 13 completed , the student will work 14 an assistant and will begin to earn money. After that he will leave Bancroft , 15 the school will continue to give him help if he 16 it.

How long will it take a student to 17 his training under this new system? The director says, “For some a year will be 18 . For others it might take ten years. ”For all, however, this method offers new 19 . Many will learn to be 20 and independent, supporting themselves in the world .

Mr Robinson had to travel somewhere on business, and as he was in a hurry, he decided to go 1 .He liked sitting beside a window when he was 2 , so when he got on the plane, he looked for a window seat . He found all of them 3 except one . There was a young man 4 beside it , and Robinson was 5 that he had not taken the one by the window . Anyhow, he went 6 it .

When he reached it, however, he saw that there was a notice on it, written in large letters, 7 “This seat is kept for proper balance. Thank you.” Mr Robinson had never seen such a notice before, 8 he thought the plane 9 be carrying something particularly heavy in its room which made it 10 to have the passengers properly balanced. So he walked 11 and found 12 empty seat, not beside the window to sit on.

Two or three other people 13 to sit in the window seat 14 the young man, but they 15 read the notice and walked on . Then when the plane was nearly 16 a very beautiful girl 17 into the plane. It is true that paper can not last long. But is there any 1 that would last as long as 2 and as easy to write on as paper? The Babylonians 3 just such a material. Recently an English man unearthed a large 4 of a king of Babylonia, whose 5 were made of clay (陶土).

This is the 6 these books were made. They just made a sheet of clay of proper 7 and thickness, and wrote on it with a sharp stick. These books of clay, 8 they had been dried and 9 in an oven (炉), could last 10 as long as stone. Such books will not 11 up in a fire 12 be spoiled (损坏) by wetness; nor will they be 13 by mice or rats. It is true that they could be 14 , but the pieces can be gathered up and 15 together. The Englishman had to work a long time with broken sheets discovered there before he 16 them all put together properly.

There were 30,000 sheets in the library.

Every book was made up of many sheets, as our books have many 17 . It was, of course, impossible to 18 them together as we 19 now with our books. So all the clay sheets had to be 20 and the name of the book placed on every one.

When I was about twelve, I suddenly developed a great passion (=strong feeling of love) for writing poetry (= poems). I gave up all my other 1 , such as collecting stamps, and spent all my 2 time reading poetry and writing it. This habit of writing poetry on every possible time soon got me 3 trouble at school. If a lesson did not interest me, I 4 take out my notebook and start writing poems 5 . Of course I 6 this very cautiously (小心地), but it was not 7 I got caught. Not long after, I read 15 a poetry contest and I decided to send in my poem. Weeks later, long after I had given up 16 , I got a letter informing (= giving knowledge to ) me I had won first 17 . Everyone at school was very impressed, 18 die geography teacher, who 19 me more carefully than ever.He insisted that I 20 poetry in his class!

A true apology is more than just acknowledgment (承认) of a mistake. It's recognition that something you've said or 1 has damaged a relationship-and that you 2 enough about that relationship to want it 3 .

It's never 4 to acknowledge you are in the wrong. Being human, we all need the art of apology. Look back and think how 5 you've judged roughly, said 6 things, pushed yourself 7 at the expense of a friend. Some deep thought in us knows that when 8 a small mistake has been made, your 9 will stay out of balance (平衡) until the mistake is acknowledged and regret 10 .

I remember a doctor friend, 11 me about a man who came to him with 12 illnesses: headache insomnia (失眠症),stomachaches and so on. No physical 13 could be found. Finally the doctor said to the man, “ 14 you tell me what's on your conscience (良心), I can't help you.”

Perhaps you have read about Robinson Crusoe. Many children like to read about this man who lived 1 for years on 2 island far out in the ocean. His ship was driven 3 the rock in a stormy and all the other men on board were drowned. He alone 4 the island. It is a long story and 5 of the many brave and clever 6 he did as he lived with his family of animals. When he first swam to the island, he did not know 7 he would find in this strange place. Here is 8 of his story.

“What should I do? I was very wet and had no 9 of clothes. I was 10 and thirsty and didn't know 11 to turn to find anything to eat or drink. Were there 12 wild animals on the island? Would they attack me?”

“Night was coming on and I had to look for a place to sleep in. I stood there 13 . I didn't know 14 to do.”

“After a 15 I made up my mind to do as the birds do. I would sleep 16 a tree. I looked round and found a tree with strong, heavy branches 17 I felt sure I could rest in 18 without danger of falling.”

“Though I had no gun, 19 I had my knife with me, with it I cut 20 a thick stick. I wanted to be able to drive off animals. Then I climbed the tree, and as I was tired, I fell asleep and didn't wake up till the sun was high in the sky.”

It is strange that so many of the important meetings in people's lives take place quite by chance. I could have sat 1 in the train I caught to London 2 the day I left university 3 it was almost empty. 4 I did not want to be 5 and sat opposite a man who was so absorbed (全神贯注) in his newspaper ac first 6 I could not see his face.

After a few minutes he 7 the paper with an impatient gesture (表情) . He had not realized I was there, and probably because of his surprise, made a 8 about the weather. Then he glanced at me and said, “End of term?” “The end of university 9 me, ” I said, I had not 10 got used to the idea that from then on I was 11 a student, “Well , now you have got your 12 , I expect you're looking 13 a long summer break.” “Not exactly, ” I said. “The first thing I must do is to look for a job . I've got my name down for three of four interviews, but, to 14 the truth, they don't 15 me much.”

For the rest of the journey, we talked about my studies. 16 I know Mr Merrick very well, I know he never asks questions to pass the time . 17 we reached London, he knew almost all 18 to know about me . As I was saying good-bye, he handed me a business 19 with his name on it and the address of Merrick Enterprises Ltd. in the city .

“If you 20 ideas during the summer, ” he said, “give me a ring.”
