The famous Saint Bernard dogs have saved many travellers lost in storms on the Alps. The dog's home is a travelers' shelter(避难所) kept by Augustinian monks(修道士). It stands at the highest point of the Great Saint Bernard Pass. For hundreds of years the pass has been used for travel between Switzerland and Italy. The journey was often dangerous.

　 Snow and ice still block the pass for months. But the dogs are no longer needed to search it after a storm. In 1964 the Great Saint Bernard Tunnel was opened for motor transport. The tunnel, only three and a half miles long, was the first Alpine tunnel for road traffic.
