If you prefer doughnuts（炸面饼） to dumbbells（哑铃）, you have a high chance of developing diabetes（糖尿病） later in life. But if you wash down those doughnuts with at least seven cups of coffee a day, you are only half as likely as that.

The finding is “quite surprising and fairly dramatic”, says Bill Hartnett of UK Diabetes, although the patients’ group won’t be advising people to drink lots of coffee just yet. While there’s little evidence that one or two cups a day is harmful, some studies suggest that heavy coffee drinkers are unusually sensitive to pain, easier to fearful disorders and can also have higher blood pressure, which increase the risk of heart disease.

The study was done by Rob van Dam’s team at the National Institute for Public Health and Environment in the Netherlands, which analysed the data on 171,111 men and women. The team found that those who drank seven or more cups of coffee a day were 50 percent less likely to develop type 2 diabetes than those who drank two cups of coffee or fewer a day. This was despite the fact that the heavy coffee drinkers tended to have sedentary （惯于久坐的） lifestyles, which increases the risk of developing diabetes.

“It’s too early to get excited,” warns Edwin Gale, a diabetes specialist in Britain at the University of Bristol. “It may just be that coffee drinkers behave differently,” he says.

Type 2 diabetes used to appear mainly in older people, but as levels of obesity （being fat） have increased in children, so has the disease in common. It’s a serious disorder―high blood sugar levels damage many organs, and can lead to anything from blindness to kidney（肾） failure.

It usually occurs when the body becomes less sensitive to insulin（胰岛素）, the hormone that tells cells to take in too much blood glucose. Caffeine isn’t an obvious remedy （补救法） for type 2 diabetes, because its immediate effect is to lower sensitivity to insulin.

NEW DELHI, India （AP）―India is fast becoming a top destination for tourists thanks to a forceful campaign to push the country’s Himalayan spas（矿泉名胜） and beaches, officials say.

Tourism officials have been crisscrossing the globe as part of the government’s “Incredible India” campaign launched in 2003. And the results are beginning to show. Tourists traveling to India have jumped by nearly 26 percent from last year and the number is expected to cross 3 million this year, said Amitabh Kant, chairman of the India Tourism Development Corp.

“Foreign exchange earnings, too, have shown a nearly 40 percent rise this year,” Kant told The Associated Press.

India’s earnings from tourism were $4.3 billion between January and November 2004, compared to $3.1 billion for the same period of 2003.

“Tourist figures are looking up, especially after the way the travel magazines are praising India,” Renuka Choudhury, India’s tourism minister, told reporters just before leaving for Spain and Italy to push the “Incredible India” campaign.

Conde Nast Traveler ranked India sixth among the world’s top 10 destinations in its annual readers’ traveler awards. India won top points for its cultural diversity, hospitality and good value for money.

Lonely Planet Online, the Website of the guidebook series, described India as among the top five international holiday destinations along with Thailand, Italy, Australia and New Zealand.

If you want to increase your vocabulary, the best way to do it might be to pick up a guitar, or learn the violin. A new study shows that learning to play a musical instrument makes the brain more able to remember words.

“Grown-ups with music training in their childhood can have better memory for words,” said Dr Agnes Chan of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, who did the research. “They can remember things that you tell them better than those who did not have music training when they were young.”

It seems that one can remember spoken words because his brain has a special part. “That part of the brain is larger in musicians than in non-musicians,” Dr Chan told BBC. “If that part of the brain is larger, it may be better developed and so this explains very nicely our results.”

Dr Chan and her workmates came to their conclusion after studying students. Their research is reported in the latest edition of the journal（杂志） Nature. “We did the experiment with 60 girl college students from our university and 30 of them have at least six years training with one western musical instrument （such as the violin and the piano） before the age of 12. The other 30 had received no music training. We tested their memory by reading them some words and asking them to remember these words―a very common test for memory. We found that people who have had music training can remember about 70% more information than those who have not had any music training.”

Dr Chan thinks the process（过程） of learning is more important than the actual instrument used. She also believes if one is able to remember words through learning to play instruments, he or she could have some very real benefits. Last year we visited Stratford, the place where Shakespeare was born on the 23rd of April, 1564.

Stratford is a very interesting town, right in the center of England. The countryside around Stratford is pleasant, with its beautiful woods, green fields and quiet rivers.

The first place we visited was the house in the center of Stratford where Shakespeare was born. We saw the small desk that Shakespeare sat at when he went to school. One of the things we liked best was the garden behind the house, because we could see there many of the flowers, trees and plants that Shakespeare wrote about in his plays.

After we had visited Shakespeare’s birthplace, we went to see the church where he was buried.

We had lunch in a very old hotel that was probably there in Shakespeare’s time. Every room of the hotel had the name of one of Shakespeare’s plays on the door―the “Hamlet” room, the “Romeo and Juliet” room, and so on.

After lunch we walked across the fields to the old cottage, about a mile out of Stratford, where Shakespeare spent most of his married life. The cottage is just as it was in Shakespeare’s day. We saw the chairs where Shakespeare perhaps sat and thought about ideas for new plays, and we saw the plates from which he probably ate his dinner.

When we got back to our hotel that evening, we were tired, but we had enjoyed a wonderful day.
