From Daban, we move to another ancient small town,Loulan. Daban town is famous for girls and windmills, while Loulan is a myth(神话)in the desert.

Two thousand years ago, beside the beautiful and rich Luobu Lake, there lay Loulan ancient city of the Silk Road. Businessmen from every country gathered here and there were dancing parties. Everything showed that people in Loulan lived a rich life then.

However, two thousand years later, this rich land suddenly disappeared from the map of China. Then it became an area covered with sand and dead tree trunks.

Loulan was first "discovered" by a Swedish man in 1900. People from America, Britain, Japan and Sweden, all set foot here. Then in the 1930s, a Chinese named Huang Wenbi came to Loulan for the first time. He visited and studied this area and found many relics that were beautifully and carefully made.

It is recorded that the ancient city of Loulan was the capital of Loulan Kingdom during the Han and Jin Dynasties(朝代),and covered an area of some 100 ,000 square metres. Inside the city, there are the ruins of government offices, temples and other old buildings. Outside the city, there are some dried rivers and much farmland. In the past century many things have been dug out there including Han Dynasty coins, mirrors and many things from Greek and Roman. All these things show that a lot of business between East and West once took place there.

Lying on the northwest of the Lop Nur area, the Loulan Kingdom is now a lifeless area with endless "forests" of mounds(小丘)which aren't easily seen in other parts of the world. Its mystery has been attracting so many people from so many countries.

Often referred to as "The Lost City of the Incas",Machu Picchu is probably the most fa?miliar symbol of the Inca Empire(印加帝国).It was built around the year 1450, but abandoned (遗弃)a hundred years later,at the time of the Spanish conquest of the Inca Empire. Forgotten for centuries, the site was brought to worldwide attention in 1911 by Hiram Bingham, an Amer?ican historian. Since then,Machu Picchu has become an important tourist attraction. It was an?nounced a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983. It is also one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. But it has recently come to light that the site may have been discovered and robbed secretly as early as in 1867 by a German businessman, Augusto Beras.

7,000 feet above sea level and located on a small hilltop between the Andean Mountain Range, the majestic city rises above the Urabamba Valley below. Then a huge wall, the Tai-wan-kai, handrails are all seems to be naturally formed in the same precipice. Machu Picchu is surrounded by tropical jungle. Separated into three areas―farming, urban, and religious(宗教的)一the structures are arranged so that the function(功能)of the buildings matches the form of their surroundings. The agricultural terracing and ditches(梯田和沟渠)take advantage of the nat?ural slopes(斜坡);the lower areas contain buildings occupied by farmers and teachers, and the most important religious areas are located at the crest of the hill,over-looking the fresh green Urabamba Valley thousands of feet below.

Hikers, tourists, and the early explorers describe similar emotions as they'climb their way through the Inca Trail. Many call the experience magical and say the area creates a wonderful green paradise, making it a must for anyone who travels to Peru.

As a teenager in 1972 ,Bill Gates boasted that he would be a millionaire by the time he was 20. While he did not quite achieve that goal, only 15 years later he was a billionaire. And by 1992 ,as head of the Microsoft company, he became the richest man in America with assets(资产)of approximately $6.3 billion.

Born in Seattle,Washington on 28 ,October 1956 ,Gates was named William Henry after his father and grandfather. From the beginning, he was an extremely energetic and intelligent(聪明的)child. He had read the entire world book encyclopedia(百科全书)by the age of nine. His favorite subjects at school were science and maths and his favorite past time was "thinking".

Gates first started to play with computers at the age of 13,when one was installed(安装)at his school. At that time, computers were large, awkward(笨重的)machines. Operators were re?quired to learn complex(复杂的)computer languages before the machines could be used. Even then,a great deal of time and effort was needed to perform the simplest functions. Before long,Gates was an expert at working the school's computer. After his graduation from secondary school, Gates was accepted by the three top universities in USA一Princeton, Harvard and Yale. He chose Harvard and began classes there the next autumn, majoring maths. But he was still ob?sessed(痴 迷)with computers and spent as much time in the computer laboratories as he did in the lecture halls.

By 1975, Gates and a partner, Paul Allen, had developed a software called BASIC. This was not the first program ever created, but its inventors were the first to decide that people who wanted to use it should pay for it.

BASIC was a success because until it came along there had been no efficient way of getting computers to carry out instructions. Although he had not yet completed his degree, Gates left university and went to work full time for the new company he had formed called Microsoft.

His next project(项目)was the software program that made him famous and very rich. It was called DOS,short for Disk Operating System, and it was purchased(购买)by IBM in 1980. Today it is the operating system used in more than 14 million personal computers around the world.

As chief executive officer(首席执行官)of Microsoft, Gates is known as a bright man, but one who is not easily satisfied. He is quick to criticize(批评)his staff and hates to be questioned about decisions he has made. He was regarded as a loner, an unfashionable boring computer nut, until his marriage to Microsoft manager Melonda French on New Year's Day 1994. Yet to most people now,Gates is a person who is,in spite of his great wealth, humble(谦恭的)and ordinary. He spends his money carefully, he eats in fast-food restaurants and flies economy class
(经济舱).And when praised for Microsoft's great success, he has been heard to say, "All we do is put software in a box and if people see it in the stores and like it,they buy it.”

Every time you visit Disney World, there's something new to see. Each time the park ex?pands ,so do your chances to spend money. How can you save? As a family guide to Disney World, I've been to the park more than 25 times with my kids, and I've developed a few money-saving tips.

Buy the five-day All-in-One Pass even if you're visiting for fewer days,it's a deal (the pass costs $299 for visitors ages 10 and up, $183 for kids ages three to nine and is free for kids under age three). Without the pass, you'll have to pay separately for Pleasure Island and the water parks. A single trip to Blizzard Beach, for example, would cost a family of four $100.

Dine out at lunch. The prices at some of the nicer restaurants, especially those in Epcot's World Showcase, are much lower at noontime than at dinner. It's wise to make reservations(预定)before you leave home.

Become a Gold Card Member. For $65 ,you can get a Magic Kingdom Club Gold Card (call 1 -800-56-DISNEY). Cardholders get up to 20 percent off Disney hotel rooms, plus price breaks on character breakfasts, theme park tickets and goods from Disney stores.

Don't pay extra to see a character. Character theme dinner shows are expensive, costing a family of four about $140, and even a character breakfast, where Mickey Mouse or Donald Duck joins you for cakes, can set you back $50. If your budget(预算)is tight, try to meet the characters inside the theme parks and at free in-park shows. You can watch the Diamond Horse?shoe show, for example, in the Magic Kingdom for no additional cost, while the similarly themed Hoop-Dee-Doo Musical Revue needs expensive tickets.

Wait until the end of your trip to buy souvenirs(纪念品).By then, the kids will really know what they want, and you won't waste money on expensive things.

(   ) 2. Which of the following can be used in place of "set you back"?

A. Offer you much. B. Save you much.

C. Cost you much. D. Pay you much.

(   ) 3. You should pay more money

A.     if you have a five-day All-in-One Pass while you're visiting for four days
